Présentation de l'éditeur

Mike Mignola has deservedly become one of the biggest names in comics for his creation of Hellboy. But when Mignola needs a short break from the Hellboy universe, he turns to diversions such as The Amazing Screw-On Head, winner of the Eisner Award for Best Humor Publication! When Emperor Zombie threatens the safety of all life on earth, President Lincoln enlists the aid of a mechanical head. With the help of associates Mr. Groin (a faithful manservant) and Mr. Dog (a dog), Screw-On Head must brave ancient tombs, a Victorian flying apparatus, and demons from a dimension inside a turnip. This new collection of oddball Mignola creations also includes "The Magician and the Snake," from Dark Horse Maverick: Happy Endings, and nearly fifty pages of brand-new material, all as weird and hilarious as the beloved Screw-On Head.

After a three-year break, I am slowly getting back into the works of Mike Mignola. This break was brought about by my overdosing on BPRD, as well as Mignola's abandoning art chores on his books in order to focus solely on writing. No offense to the guy: I like his writing, but it's his art that made me such a fan. Luckily, there is a new collection of pure Mignola material on the shelf: THE AMAZING SCREW-ON HEAD & OTHER CURIOUS OBJECTS. The title of this collection couldn't be more appropriate, as it contains odd bits published in one-shots or anthologies, some reworked or new pieces, some pin-ups, and sketch pages. As you can guess from the title and cover image, this material couldn't fit anywhere else but this book, and Mignola actually ties it all together with some common elements.

"The Amazing Screw-On Head" - With a variety of mechanical bodies to choose from, Screw-On Head works in the service of President Abraham Lincoln to keep the United States safe from the forces of evil, be they zombies, vampires, mad scientists, or demons. Throw in a heavy dose of steampunk and a plot for world domination and you have a story that contains every element that makes a Mignola story a Mignola story, even poking fun at his writing and art styles. So what the heck IS Screw-On Head? A robot? A golem? A cyborg? This burning question is "almost" addressed in a whacked-out conclusion that sets the tone for the rest of the book. Hey, this story won an Eisner award, so it must be good, right? Good enough to have inspired a one-shot cartoon that altered and expanded upon it.

"Abu Gung & The Beanstalk" - A different take on Jack & The Beanstalk, this is an early childhood adventure of the warrior-king mentioned in Screw-On Head. It has been reworked from its original version.

"The Wizard & The Snake" - Written in collaboration with his 7 year old daughter, this endearing fable won Mignola yet another Eisner.

"The Witch & Her Soul" - Created for this collection, this is an odd Brothers Grimm type of story, starring two wooden puppets who get the short end of their creator's deal with the devil.

"The Prisoner of Mars" - A new story, and my favorite of the collection. More typical Mignola craziness, but with aliens.

"In the Chapel of Curious Objects" - Not so much a story as a collection of images that serve to unify the book. The title and the images brought to mind the works of the writer Steven Millhauser.

Please be aware that this collection is only 104 pages; however, as it's a hardcover, you'll pay the same price as a standard Hellboy trade. You may finish this book rather quickly, but the material is so good that it easily lends itself to multiple reads. Mike, this is a collection of pure gems - let's see more!

HASH(0x902766fc) étoiles sur 5 THE AMAZING SCREW-ON HEAD AND OTHER CURIOUS OBJECTS by Mike Mignola 2 octobre 2013

The Amazing Screw-On Head and Other Curious Objects (2010) collects Mike Mignola's eponymous Eisner-winning one-shot and a number of short stories, including "The Magician and the Snake," which he co-authored with his daughter Katie, then seven years old. In the title story, President Lincoln enlists Screw-On Head to thwart the plans of the nefarious Emperor Zombie.

In many ways, Screw-On Head is very typical Mignola: great quirky characters, fantastically atmospheric art, and light and minimalist plotting and stories. There are some obvious similarities between numerous Hellboy stories and Screw-On Head, although the latter is decidedly campier. It's also extremely amusing, and it's remarkable how effectively Mignola juxtaposes his dark gothic imagery with silly dialogue.

Mignola states in the notes that "There are no untold Screw-On Head stories," and he's absolutely right - he does everything he needs to do with the characters, scenarios, and genre in this single comic. In broad strokes, he accomplishes quite a bit, and better this than running the ideas into the ground.

(A note: I picked up this book after seeing the 2006 animated Amazing Screw-On Head pilot, which I found very funny. Good as this book is, and in spite of everything I've just written, I think I like it better as a cartoon, what with the fleshed-out backstories and the campiness and the comic delivery.)

The other stories in this volume are only peripherally related, if at all, to Screw-On Head. The heartwarming (and Eisner-winning) "The Magician and the Snake" is popular with fans, but my favorite of the rest of the stories is "The Prisoner of Mars," which shares the title story's manically tongue-in-cheek tone. The others are enjoyable, if light on storytelling punch.

Fair warning: this book is 104 pages, but a large chunk of that (close to 20%, maybe) is sketches and pinups. It's an extraordinarily quick read.

Short as it is, with great atmosphere and entertaining stories, The Amazing Screw-On Head and Other Curious Objects is another solid offering from Mignola.

Did you ever have one of those dreams, one of those amazing don't wake me up dreams? It's almost like a fever dream, it's so unbelievable yet at the same time it's so wonderful.
The images, the situation, even the people are so clear. Yet the whole dream is shrouded in a kind of fog that only adds to the mystery and beauty.
It may be a bit frightening, even dangerous, but there is excitement there that you just don't want to stop.
And then… You wake up.
"Wait... What... That's it?" You think. "No... no not yet. Five more minutes please then I'll wake up... I'm not finished... it's not finished yet!"
That's it.
It's now just a rapidly fading memory of a dream, which in fact makes it all the more precious and wonderful.
That's with The Amazing Screw On Head feels like, a fever dream.
There is so much that goes unexplained, so many questions, so many pieces to the puzzle that seems to be missing. But that's it that's all he, Mike Mignola, wrote.
Of course there is Good and Evil, the living, the dead, and the undead. Fighting, explosions, mysterious women... And oh yes, Abraham Lincoln. And a very beautiful, completely unexplained imagery that tells the story.
That's it.
Now stop reading this, stop right now. Go read this book, you could've read it twice over by now.
This slim volume office something very precious, it offers a dream. A dream that you can return to again and again.

While this compilation is certainly not made up of the best things Mignola has done, mediocre Mignola is still better than 90% of the graphic literature that's published. I highly recommend the animated adaptation of Screw-On Head, however. I thought it captured a tone that I couldn't pick up from the written work. This surprised me, as I got the opposite from the animated and live action Hellboy productions. While mostly enjoyable, only Hellboy comics have ever come close to that Hellboy ambiance I crave.

Mignola's quick wit and sense of humor is on perfect display here-- while there is a fair amount of comedy it's handled in a way that doesn't overpower the menace of Emperor Zombie. Originally produced as an idea for an action figure line, the Amazing Screw On Head is a great addition to the collection of anyone who enjoy's Mike's work on Hellboy. Screw On Head is a combination of JJ Arms (remember him), Hercule Poirot and the Wild Wild West.

Screw On Head is a secret agent of the 1860s called to action by a moving portrait of President Lincoln. It's only a shame that there was only this one Screw On adventure. The other stories collected in this nice inexpensive hardcover include some really great offbeat stories.

A lot of fun and highly recommended for fans of Mignola's Hellboy, as well as for those who might want to see what makes Mignola's work so endearing.
