Présentation de l'éditeur
This is the first major comprehensive book on the history and evolution of antique glass bottles, flasks and jars between 1500 and 1850.Lavishly illustrated with new special commissioned colour photography, it also includes the most comprehensive world-wide bibliography on glass bottles ever produced listing 1150 titles. Whilst the collecting of antique drinking glasses is very popular throughout Europe, the collecting of utility bottles(1500-1850) has, in contrast, and until very recently, been very much neglected on the Continent in spite of the wide variety of artistic shapes and colours. This book has been written for all collectors, archaeologists, museums, libraries, historians, writers, researchers, institutions, bottlemakers, wine and beer enthusiasts, pharmacists and anyone interested in the collecting of antiques and the social history they reflect. To render this book as comprehensive as possible, the selection of bottles has been carefully chosen from private collections with only three examples being from museums. There is also an extensive glossary of bottlemaking terms.

This book is systematically built to illustrate the evolution and history of glass bottles in separated chapters: Great Britain; Holland and Belgium; Belgium(supplement); Germany, Alpine Countries and Scandinavia; France, Italy, Spain and Portugal; Miscellaneous: Europe and America. This system of organisation serves to facilitate comparison of and learning about differences between various European and American bottles, flasks and jars. Often comprehensive works such as this are hard to read. Mr. Willy Van den Bossche's work was developed with a special concept in mind - a book that is user friendly. It begins with a general chapter on the history of bottles with 48 Figures and condensed descriptions so that the reader does not become tired or bored with long textual treatments. Each of the histories is written as a compilation of dates and facts instead of tediously long pages of text. Plates 1-28 in the chapter on Great Britain display a full evolution of the English "wine" bottles with an exceptional range of sealed and date-sealed examples for each decade from the 1660s to the 1880s. These bottles are the heart of the story of the development of the modern bottle. This chapter alone solves the mysteries American collectors have puzzled over the years. This treatment goes far beyond what we Americans generally call "black glass" and "wine" bottles. "Antique Glass Bottles" comes with a separate 16-page Price Guide booklet to make the book independent of fluctuating prices: The quality of the photographs is exceptional. The book also includes the most comprehensive worldwide bibliography on glass bottles ever produced, listing 1,151 titles. There is a six-page glossary on bottlemaking terms and an index which facilitates finding of the book's extensive contents. This book is undoubtedly a major, wholly comprehnesive landmark guide and reference that in the coming decades everybody - interested in antique glass bottles everywhere - will want to have.

This is one of the most comprehensive books on the early development of the bottle; particularly those from England and the Low Countries. Absolutely beautiful photographs on nearly every page, complete bibliography for further reference. This book is in the same class as the revered McKearin volumes, and every serious collector of 17th, 18th, and early 19th century bottles should have a copy in their library.

At Last, a True Guide for European-Bottle Collectors
le 27 octobre 2001 - Publié sur Amazon.com
The publication of Willy's book marks a major milestone in the field of black-glass collecting. It is the first real effort at a comprehensive and authoritative guide on European bottles aimed at a broad English-reading audience worldwide. For years, collectors and others have waited for just such a book to appear. The numerous colour photos are outstanding. The text is clear, to the point, and easy to read. Any collector, no matter where he lives or what he collects, will, after reading the book, be able to pursue his passion in a much more informed way. I highly recommend the book, which should be on the book shelf of every serious bottle collector and student of historical glass containers.
