How many quilt books can you say this about: it has no new designs but it's a very good book? British mother/daughter authors Pam & Nicky Lintott accomplish exactly that with their latest book Antique to Heirloom Jelly Roll Quilts.

The Lintott design duo keeps close to tradition by offering classics such as chains, 9-patch and 16-patch, bowties, tumbling blocks, log cabins, and schoolhouses. What IS new is the use of jellyrolls to create each quilt top. For instance, the tumbling blocks pattern becomes a strippy quilt, and is much easier to piece as it does not employ Y-seams or partial seams. And the color schemes are lovely; they take nothing away from the antique originals yet add a fresh update employing the hues of today's best fabric collections.

I was pleased to see a "Special Tools" section in the Getting Started chapter. With so many new rulers coming out these days, it is good to know before buying any book if you also have to purchase a new ruler (or if you can substitute one you already own). To make half-square triangles and pyramid units, the Lintotts use Creative Grids Quilting Ruler Multi-Size 45 Degree / 90 Degree Triangle and Creative Grids Quilting Ruler Multi-Size 45 Degree / 90 Degree Triangle. Basically, these rulers create single half-square triangle (or pyramid) units from strips. You may well be able to substitute a ruler you already own if you know what you're doing and can end up with a pieced block identical in dimension to the Lintott's.

Just a word on terminology so that certain quilting book buyers are not disappointed. The term "modern" as used in the subtitle "12 Modern Quilt Patterns From Vintage Patchwork Quilt Designs" does not mean contemporary or abstract as in the quilting world's most recent definition of the term. Of late, "modern" has taken on the meaning of graphic, improvisational, interpretive, and/or "art quilt". THIS is not that type of modern, but if you want some examples of what IS modern, check out Quilting Modern: Techniques and Projects for Improvisational Quilts or Modern Patchwork: 12 Quilts to Take You Beyond the Basics.

But back to Antique to Heirloom ... If you are not already a fan of Pam & Nicky Lintotts's, Antique to Heirloom is a buy-worthy place to begin.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I love this book 16 mai 2013

I like how this book shows the antique version of the quilt and then the more modern version of the same quilt. The history of the quilts is also interesting.I started making the Ocean Waves pattern using the instructions provided, had already cut my fat quarters into strips and started cutting with the suggested rulers, only to realize that cutting 800 of this and 160 of that was going to take me forever. I purchased an Accuquilt Go! and the 2 inch finished half square triangle die and finished cutting out my quilt pieces. I realize I didn't follow the exact cutting directions, but the directions provided in the book were easy to follow, minus the odd typos/errors here and there. The finished quilt turned out just a beautiful as the one in the book and the recipient was thrilled. Currently making another of the same Ocean Waves pattern from the book.

None of the patterns in the book are new patterns, however the instructions are easy to follow and the resulting quilts are beautiful. They are easily made with precuts, yardage or scraps from your stash. I plan on making several of the quilts in the book and can't wait to start on them!

I thoroughly enjoy reading through this book and perusing the lovely antique quilts, and their match for today's designs. This team of mother and daughter truly amazes me with their talent and it just keeps getting better! I keep this close by as one of my favorites to view for inspiration. I love their Jewel in the Crown Quilt (nine patch), Back to School Quilt (Schoolhouse), and Chain Reaction Quilt (Irish Chain) variations, just to name a few in this wonderful collection. If you love the antique quilts, you will enjoy reading the short stories on each of the antique quilts and love having this book in your collection.

Once again, I am thrilled with a wonderful pattern book from Pam and Nicky Lintott. I am planning on making a 30's reproduction quilt with my daughter...the only problem? We are having a very difficult time deciding which pattern we like best! These take me back in time, and remind me of the quilts my Grandmother made. The instructions are wonderful, every single step of the way is explained so well, there are no questions about creating each and every quilt with ease. This book will be cherished, as are all my pattern books by Pam and Nicky!

This book is beautiful and inspirational. I am looking forward to making several of the quilts. I was given a bunch of jelly roll fabric bundles from a quilting friend and I have been buying pattern books to help me decide on what to make with them. I love the photos of the antique inspiration in this book as well as the modern remakes and the instructions are clear and easy to follow.
