Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher. --Ce texte fait référence à une édition épuisée ou non disponible de ce titre.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Around the World in 80 Days is a timeless book. A SUPERB MUST HAVE BOOK! 19 mars 2014

Well I must say that the movie Around the World in 80 Days was a outstanding movie and I have seen it more than five times! However, until recently, I had never read the book. So I decided to turn off the computer, turn off the TV etc, relax with lots of fluffy pillows and read this book. And every page I thoroughly enjoyed, it was so well described that I felt like I was on a trip around the world with them.
This timeless book is still wonderful, maybe more so in today's hurry up and tech times! What a way to relax and unwind after a stressful day. This book I found more detailed than the movie and I found myself bookmarking passages to refer to as I will be reading this book from time to time, again and again and again...

Highly recommend this book!

Its a unique and amazing story about a legendary wager on a very specific question: Can a man travel around the world in under 80 days?
To prove that we can certainly travel, Phileas Fogg starts from London, after betting his entire fortune in favor of his answer. Thus starts journey around the world, which is presented in detail and very well written. But there is a misunderstanding in the police department due to which the gentleman is branded a criminal and on the run from the cops. He is followed by a cop throughout the journey and it gets more and more interesting until the very end where there is a catch.
Verdict:
Totally worth it. One of the best novels out there!

I see now why this is a classic! This was my first time reading this spectacular novel, and having not seen the film, I was thrilled with Mr. Doug's journey around the world.
Verne gives painstakingly historically and geographically accurate details throughout the novel, which gives the reader the sense that they are making this famous journey around the world within the hours it takes them to read about it.
If you are one for adventure, travel, history, or simply a good read, you will be more than satisfied to procure a copy of Around the World in Eighty Days.

I can't believe that a 130+ year old book translated to English was good enough to keep me up half the night but this brilliant old gem did. The story features the height of late 1800 steam technology and a couple of heros who want to circumnavigate the earth in 80 days to win a bet. The characters are surprisingly likable and the action is just GREAT. Put this at the top of the queue for great free reads and you will get a wonderful easy read and a brilliant view of the world.

The translation by Michael Glencross looks accurate and thorough and, for those who know something of French, there are slight and instructive differences. For example, M. Verne includes an explanatory sentence about Mme Tussaud's wax museum ("Il convient de dire ici que les « bonshommes » de Mme Tussaud sont des figures de cire, fort visitées à Londres, et auxquelles il ne manque vraiment que la parole.") that Mr. Glencross does not include, and others ("Passepartout n'était point un de ces Frontins ou Mascarilles") that are in an English equivalent ("Passpartout was not one of those cheeky or scheming servants").

Verne has what seems like a deadpan sense of humor and enjoyment in the trip and the relations among all of the people involved. A useful addition to Glencross's translation are his notes that explain people, places, and events better known in the 1870's than today. And whether "Nous partons dans dix minutes pour Douvres et Calais" or "In ten minutes we leave for Dover and Calais" this trip has remained popular for the past 145 years.
