Présentation de l'éditeur

Jules Gabriel Verne (1828 – 1905) was a French author who pioneered the science-fiction genre. The story ”Around the World in Eighty Days” starts in London on October 2, 1872. A rich English gentleman and bachelor living in solitude at Number 7 Savile Row, Burlington Gardens lives a modest life with habits carried out with mathematical precision. He is a member of the Reform Club and gets involved in an argument over an article in The Morning Chronicle, stating that with the opening of a new railway section in India, it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. He accepts a wager for £20,000 from his fellow club members, which he will receive if he makes it around the world in 80 days. Accompanied by his butler, Monsieur Passepartout, he leaves London by train at 8:45 P.M. on October 2, 1872, and thus is due back at the Reform Club at the same time 80 days. Does he make it and win the wager? The story was a best-seller at the time, and is still a highly educational all-time favourite. --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition Broché .

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Around the World in 80 Days is a timeless book. A SUPERB MUST HAVE BOOK! 19 mars 2014

Well I must say that the movie Around the World in 80 Days was a outstanding movie and I have seen it more than five times! However, until recently, I had never read the book. So I decided to turn off the computer, turn off the TV etc, relax with lots of fluffy pillows and read this book. And every page I thoroughly enjoyed, it was so well described that I felt like I was on a trip around the world with them.
This timeless book is still wonderful, maybe more so in today's hurry up and tech times! What a way to relax and unwind after a stressful day. This book I found more detailed than the movie and I found myself bookmarking passages to refer to as I will be reading this book from time to time, again and again and again...

Highly recommend this book!

This book really holds up from my youth. When it was written, circumnavigation of the globe was a HUGE endeavor at any speed. Doing it in 80 days was a ridiculous notion. So the book was a pure action novel in it's time.

Today I can completely circle the Earth in 24 hours if really wanted to for the cost of a few plane tickets that are publicly available. (Or I could join the space program and circle the entire planet in a little under 90 minutes) So in today's society, Around The World in 80 Days isn't exactly an action story.

But it's still a GREAT adventure story! As a kid I read this book and thought it was an amazing adventure. Of course back then just going around the world at any speed sounded amazing. As a kid I barely knew what other States were, much less the other side of the world. When I re-read this recently as an adult, I was worried that I'd destroy my memory of the novel by seeing it in a less interesting light now that I've actually been all over the world.

I didn't. It was just an amazing as the first time I read it as a child.

Some of Jules Verne's books hold up like that over the years. Some don't. He was one of the most creative futurists of his day. But now the things he saw as existing in the distant future are things that we read about in history books. Sadly, the passage of time dulls some of Verne's amazing works. But Around The World in 80 Days absolutely stands the test of time!

Its a unique and amazing story about a legendary wager on a very specific question: Can a man travel around the world in under 80 days?
To prove that we can certainly travel, Phileas Fogg starts from London, after betting his entire fortune in favor of his answer. Thus starts journey around the world, which is presented in detail and very well written. But there is a misunderstanding in the police department due to which the gentleman is branded a criminal and on the run from the cops. He is followed by a cop throughout the journey and it gets more and more interesting until the very end where there is a catch.
Verdict:
Totally worth it. One of the best novels out there!

I see now why this is a classic! This was my first time reading this spectacular novel, and having not seen the film, I was thrilled with Mr. Doug's journey around the world.
Verne gives painstakingly historically and geographically accurate details throughout the novel, which gives the reader the sense that they are making this famous journey around the world within the hours it takes them to read about it.
If you are one for adventure, travel, history, or simply a good read, you will be more than satisfied to procure a copy of Around the World in Eighty Days.

I can't believe that a 130+ year old book translated to English was good enough to keep me up half the night but this brilliant old gem did. The story features the height of late 1800 steam technology and a couple of heros who want to circumnavigate the earth in 80 days to win a bet. The characters are surprisingly likable and the action is just GREAT. Put this at the top of the queue for great free reads and you will get a wonderful easy read and a brilliant view of the world.
