UPDATE: I know why the box is huge now - to completely hold the expansion boxes. I bought both, and rather like this feature of the main box now. I've also downloaded the updated rules, which are MUCH better. The expansions are rather nice because now I have at least radioactive versions of the figs that were apparently promotional - so now those mysterious starter items have a home. Though, I have to download the character cards. In this age of Kickstarter exclusivity, I should be more careful about my purchases. Between downloads and expansions, the game gets fixed, but having played a game or two, it still hasn't really excited me. My rating for the game remains unchanged at 3 stars.
I really enjoy this cooperative horror game, and I hope it continues to be supported. For example, I would like to see an expansion that adds more house tile options, and another expansion to add more characters, including those that came with the Kickstarter version. Also, because there was some confusion in the original rules, the designer of this game created a Revised Rules available for download at Boardgamegeek, which I strongly recommend. The rules and mechanics in this game are fairly complex, but, in my opinion, I feel these rules and mechanics are necessary because they provide SO many great aspects to this game. Additionally, the designer included a fantastic and clear reminder system that is built into the game to remind you of the various steps that are done each round.
Finally, there are summary sheets also available at Boardgamegeek for download to use as references during the game, which I also recommend. If you enjoy cooperative survival horror, I think you will enjoy this game. Kudos to the designer (David Ausloos) for putting so much thought and effort into this game, which was clearly apparent to me.
It will take a few play games before you really get a good understanding of how to play but it's worth it. The figures are detailed well and the game pieces are made from thick cardboard. All the small figures have a lot of good detail on them. The level of difficulty is high but can get a little easier with more people playing. We played 2 games in a row and it took us several hours of play each game. Mostly because of the learning curve with referencing the rule book frequently. We ended up losing both games but had lots of fun trying to win. Each play through will vary every time, so no game is the same. Ever. That's one thing I enjoy about this game so far is the replay value. I believe there are expansions made that I will definitely get.
The basic rundown is you are a group trying to unlock a laboratory in this haunted house. You need to unlock it in order to have the "final showdown" with a sort of boss battle. Our first round we lost before we made it to the final showdown. Each round zombies spawn in random locations and there is a potential for fire to spread and/or destroy whole rooms on the board. Yes, the board changes as you play. In order to unlock the lab you need the correct key code found on these circular chips scattered throughout the board. Once you unlock the lab it unleashes a "Nemesis" that tries to destroy the house, and possibly kill you in the process. Your new goal is to kill this Nemesis before it accomplishes its goals. Before you unlock the lab there is a "Darkness" counter that increases as you play. If it reaches the limit before you unlock the lab, you lose. It's as challenging as it sounds but a lot of fun. Well worth the purchase.
