Attack on Titan speaks for itself, one of the most popular animes right now so I don't really think I need to describe it in detail to you. If your here because you loved the anime and wanted to give the manga a go and are debating on the individual volumes or the colossal edition then this review might help you there. If you aren't sure what Attack on Titan is just read the back cover in the photos and if you have some free money and want to give it a go I highly suggest doing so, it's as good as you heard. For starters I never owned the individual volumes physically but have seen the sizes and quality. So on we go to the colossal edition volume 1 for Attack on Titan.
The colossal edition volume 1 collects the first 5 volumes of Attack on Titan and at a very reasonable price point on top of that, if you buy the individual volumes it would cost more and take up a wider shelf space if you're trying to save space. The name colossal is truly fitting for the name of this collection, coming it not far off 1000 pages, comparable in size, weight, and thickness to a school textbook it indeed lives up to its name. If you plan on storing this on a bookshelf with other mangas be sure to check the height of the manga to ensure it fits as it way taller than any I've seen. Only manga I've seen that's thicker is Death Note all in one edition (which I would very highly recommend). This manga is paperback and due to its weight and large size I would really suggest you handle this carefully as some have had theirs split in the middle. The paper quality is nice, it's also similar to graphic novels/textbook gloss paper except is thinner than comics, because of the slightly thin paper there can be very small bleed through where you can see the page behind but it's very minor and didn't affect me from enjoying the story. I only really noticed the bleed through when the whole page was a single panel, but it's not really noticeable when there's several panels on the page. One thing I appreciate about the colossal edition is that it's larger and because of this the panels and artwork is larger so it's easier to read and appreciate.
The only reason I could think of someone preferring the single volumes instead is if you take your mangas with you and read them while you out or traveling, in that instance it might not be the best but that's up to you to decide. Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase and can't wait to get into the second volume that I purchased at the same time. If you are considering purchasing this volume once again I suggest doing so if you are a fan of Attack on Titan or if you don't know much but want to dive in, it's well worth it.
Hopefully you found this review helpful and happy reading.
Update: 15/12/19
I decided to give this edition another read and thought I'd give my updated thoughts along with more pictures of the content and comparing the size of the collection compared to other mangas.
First and foremost, this thing is heavy so i suggest reading this at a desk or a table as opposed to holding it as after a while it gets quite uncomfortable. The biggest benefit of this oversize collection aside from collecting 5 volumes in one is the larger artwork and text, it really does make a difference and lets you pick up more on the subtle details. I did notice a panel that had misprinted on the speech bubble but luckily it wasn't over the text. I don't regret the purchase however the size and weight depending on when and how you read, this could be situational or put you off. Regardless for the price and the larger artwork it's still worth a purchase.
Hopefully this update and more pictures was helpful.

Description du produit
Revue de presse
"We're not sure what the downside is with this amazing mammoth edition of the best manga of last year (according to NEO readers!), but we reckon it might be something to do with wrist ache...this beautiful collection contains not just 22 chapters of the Attack on Titan story but it's also printed on gorgeous glossy paper, and it's absolutely huge as well." - --NEO

5* content let down by 1* binding
Commenté au Royaume-Uni le 24 juillet 2018Achat vérifié
No complaints about the story, artwork etc. for me that was always going to be a success, but a few comments about the book binding
Firstly, printed on good quality paper it looks very good, everything is sharp and there's nothing smeared or blurry. The publishers have chosen to keep the original Japanese ordering, so you start at the back and read right to left. It takes a bit of getting used to, but that's OK.
The reason it's 3* review is that the publishers have chosen to include almost no inner margin on the pages and it means that it's impossible to look at a page flat to get the full impact of the artwork, without almost breaking the spine of the book. It's really irritating. IMO another 1cm of paper would have made all the difference to the experience. Even if it added to the cost of the book.
I doubt I'll be buying more of the colossal editions because of this failing. Perhaps the kindle edition???

5 Stars For The Series, But Not For The Packaging
Commenté au Royaume-Uni le 11 janvier 2016Achat vérifié
This series was my first foray into manga and I loved it. It really is different storytelling and artwork from the Western comics and graphic novels. The story that unfolds in Attack on Titan is very enjoyable with the characters having depth and development. The art is beautiful - black and white which is common in manga given how quickly they are produced. The pages this is printed on are glossy, so it's a step up from trade paperbacks. The whole book itself is oversized so it's a really nice edition for collectors or first time readers who want to catch up on the series. I'd highly recommend it. It's been my first manga series, it won't be my last.
One minor grip I have has nothing to do with the book or story, but the packaging Amazon sent this in. It was actually quite embarrassing. This is a big, heavy book that should have been wrapped up properly and delivered in a cardboard box. Instead Amazon delivered it in a slightly bigger envelope with a thin layer of already burst bubble wrap on the inside of the envelope. Suffice to say when the book came it was pretty badly bashed, particularly at the corners and part of the front cover was completely bent back which left it creased. I sent it back and left them a complaint and to their credit they were very quick to send me out a new copy. It wasn't much better, nor was the packaging but I just kept it because I wanted to read the series. Hopefully these packaging issues have been resolved now though

Mixed feelings.

First of all: avoid buying this online, I'll explain why.
About the book: not sure I like it, that's why I sent it back.
Surely the size is amazing, you can read and look at the art in this oversized format, which is good. The paper is top quality glossy style print and it's gorgeous. Now onto the dislikes.
This edition is clearly thought with collectors in mind, but unfortunately this doesn't look like a collectors edition at all.
I don't understand why they made it in paperback cover. A book of this size, price and paper quality deserves a hardcover. It would have been heavier, sure, but at least they could have made it with a sort of sleeve, on the paperback cover. The book, from the outside, looks cheap ish. The spine is not captivating. It just doesn't look good at all.
If you buy this online, expect to have it delivered damaged. The book should be wrapped into something before shipping, and because of its weight and paperback cover, it gets easily damaged. I've order and sent back the first 4 volumes, which came in with rips and bent corners.
I then bought the standard 29 volumes and honestly I'm happier with them.
Overall, an amazing book, but, in my opinion, not good enough.

It's so big, I love it, picture quality is great and the pages got a kind of gloss on them so it's pure white and nice and clear
