Présentation de l'éditeur

During the twenty years that she lived in Rome, Audrey Hepburn—legendary actress, fashion icon, and humanitarian—was the epitome of chic European style, from her little black dresses to her ballet flats. Her partnership with designer Hubert de Givenchy resulted in some of the most memorable and timeless looks on film.

Audrey in Rome is a gorgeous coffee table book that includes almost 200 candid photographs of the movie star--many of which have never been published before. These rare snapshots give us glimpses into the everyday life of the gamine star of such classic films as Roman Holiday, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Sabrina.

Edited by her son, Luca Dotti, and Ludovica Damiani, film and theater writer and producer, and with text by fashion director and stylist Sciascia Gambaccini, Audrey in Rome is as personal as having Audrey Hepburn's family scrapbook in your hands.

Quatrième de couverture

Assembled by Audrey Hepburn's son Luca Dotti, Audrey in Rome is an intimate collection of almost two hundred candid photographs of the beloved actress and much-imitated style icon during the twenty-year period she made Rome her home.

A private album of rare snapshots—many never published before—of Audrey Hepburn in her everyday life as a citizen of the Eternal City, Audrey in Rome is a treasure for every fan of her films and her impeccable, timeless style. With an introduction by Dotti that reveals Audrey's private side and three photo-filled chapters organized by decade, the book captures the actress as she strolls around the city alone and with family and friends, walks her Yorkie, Mr. Famous, has breakfast in Piazza Navona, visits the local florist, and more. The book also contains set photographs of the films she made during her Rome years (Roman Holiday, War and Peace, The Nun's Story, Breakfast at Tiffany's) and of the famous clothes and accessories that helped create her iconic look. Irresistible as the actress herself, Audrey in Rome opens the door to Hepburn's personal world.

I am a big fan of Audrey Hepburn - of her movies and of her style and elegance, so when this book came out I knew that I would be buying it. It is a compilation of all black/white photos of Ms. Hepburn during the time she visited/worked, and ultimately lived in Rome. 95% of the photos show her just walking around the city (walking her dog, walking with a friend, walking with her first, then second husband, walking by herself) and at Rome's airports (getting on a plane, getting off of a plane, going thru Customs); the remaining 5% of the photos are of her at events or premieres. There are approximately 6-10 pages throughout the book with some narrative (and even those do not necessarily take up the entire page). Example: "title" page called: S-The Scarf with a little blurb about her wearing a scarf around her neck; on the opposite side of the "title" page is a small photo of her wearing a scarf around her neck. That's it. When you turn the page, it just continues with photos of her walking in Rome. The first 3-4 pages of the book provide the most narrative and they are written by her son, Luca Dotti who co-authored this book. He writes about her time in Rome. Each photo is captioned with only the date, name(s) of who is in the photo, and location (if it is known by the author). She certainly was, and still is, a fashion icon and her clothes are just so simply elegant that it would have been great to have additional captioning on who designed an outfit, maybe a little history of an outfit, etc. There are 2 Appendices at the end of the book that give one a timeline of her career albeit very, very cursory; and the other Appendix lists her movies. You do see the changing fashion styles moving from the 1950's to the 1970's but I am still mystified as to the purpose of this book other than Audrey Hepburn is in every photo and she's in Rome. So, I guess the book's title was certainly honest. Seriously, how many photos can one look at of Audrey Hepburn just walking up the stairs, down the stairs, across the street, on a sidewalk? As I stated earlier, I am a fan of her work and style, but after the first 10-20 pages, even I needed something of way more substance than this. More information on the captioning would have helped considerably and this book would have greatly benefited from an objective editor or just an editor.

I have to agree with one reviewer that this book is a bit of an oddity. This is a collection of photos taken on the streets of Rome (with a few interior shots at events) when Audrey was living in Rome in the 70s and 80s supplemented with some from the 50s and early 60s when she was living there temporarily while filming. You see Audrey walking around the streets of Rome photgraphed by reporters. Sometimes she seems oblivious, other times trying to make the best of it. Except for a handful of special events soirees, nothing really glamorous here, though Audrey is always well dressed (though she looks painfully emaciated at times). A conscience decision seems to have been made early on, not to include any family or personal photos from this time which would have provided a more fuller and warmer view of this beautiful lady who had retired from the limelight during this time to raise her family. There isnt a lot of text (some provided by her son, Luca) here. I believe this book was based on an exhibit held in Rome awhile ago and the proceeds (or some of it) go to her children's charity. If you are a fan, you will probably want this book, but dont expect this to be like Audrey in the 60s or other photo essay books. It is what it is. 3 1/2 stars.

This book is filled with photos of Audrey Hepburn and the time she spent living away from the limelight in Rome! At whatever stage in her life, she was always elegant and chic! It also shows that she was also a wonderful mother to her younger son and had a special relationship with him too!

This is a wonderful photo album of Audrey with clear captions. A delight for the true fan. I only rate it a 4 out of 5 because I wish it had been longer. It is possible though, that I couldn't put it down. Would recommend to any Audrey fan!
