HASH(0x988e07a4) étoiles sur 5 Getting Better with Age! 23 mai 2011

Augustana keeps amazing me with every cd they come out with and I am loving watching them grow as a band. Their first cd was good, they second cd was amazing, and now this cd was just great. Every time I listen to this cd, I fall in love with a new song. It keeps getting better with each and every listen. The words and music together flow perfectly and each song has a deep feeling which is rare these days. I highly recommend this cd to Augustana fans and to anyone who loves great music.

HASH(0x988e0a14) étoiles sur 5 Another solid release 28 avril 2011

I once described Augustana's third album as "the soundtrack to an autumn romance." Well, for their fourth album, I think I'd have to describe it as the soundtrack to the movie made about said autumn romance. Most of the songs feel like they were tailor made for the big ending scene of a romantic movie where the guy runs to the train station to stop the girl he loves from leaving him forever. And the songs that don't feel like that feel like the songs played during the "sad montage." You know--the part where a sad song is played over scenes of people being sad.
Some might be wondering if this is a bad thing. You'll notice that I gave the album five stars. It's not just a good album, it's a great album. It's a solid, cohesive work that's easy to listen to and before you know it, find yourself singing along. A fun album to drive to.
I've never been a big fan of Augustana's singles though. "Sweet and Low" is the only one I listen to on a regular basis. I'd have to say that their first single on this album is no exception. "Steal Your Heart" is far to repetitive and, simply put, forgettable, for me to enjoy it more than background music. What I've heard will be their next single--"Shot in the Dark"--is much better, however. So far, it's one of my favorite songs on the album.
They've come a long way since Midwest Skies and Sleepless Mondays. They developed a Wallflowers sound, which is exactly the band this album brought to mind. You put Jakob Dylan on lead vocals and no one would know the difference. When I first heard All Stars and Boulevards I was hoping for more of a Dashboard Confessional/The Spill Canvas type sound as the band progressed, but this is a sound that works for them. They do this very well.
Of course, if you are looking for a return to that raw feeling of All Stars and Boulevards (my personal favorite from their collection), then you will be disappointed. They found their sound with Can't Love Can't Hurt, and it looks like their sticking with it. Maybe that's why they chose to go with a self-titled album: because this is Augustana. Well, if it is, you won't hear any complaints from me. I'll be looking forward to learning this album by heart over the coming summer. I won't say this is better than Can't Love Can't Hurt, because, honestly, I don't think it is. But like I said before, this isn't just a good album, it's a great album.

HASH(0x988e0c9c) étoiles sur 5 New Augustana = Late Killers 27 avril 2011

Like the other two reviews already posted, I have been a passionate listener of Augustana since I saw them open up for Dashboard in Austin. The album is good. No doubt about the soulful and melodic lines of material coming from the solid contours of this album. Yet, I find myself disappointed with the voice on the other end. The first track off the album I had to make sure I wasn't in another dimension and that this was still Daniel Layus at the helm and not Brandon Flowers of former Killers fame. I'm glad that Augustana has held their own in the music industry and I really hope they make it big someday. But, I'm sad to say, this album won't be in my rotation as much as Can't Love, Can't Hurt.

I was a big fan of Augustana, so naturally I was excited for this album. When 'Steal Your Heart' first started playing, I immediately thought that this was bound to be a good album. Then during the next songs, I began listening to the lyrics more carefully. They were full of banalities. I would have been able to forgive that if there was more raw passion in his singing, but I don't think Layus even believes the things he was singing. Where were the stories behind the songs that made 'Bullets' and 'Twenty Years' so good? Where was the passionate singing that made me first take notice of Augustana? Not only that, but a few of the songs musically sound like boy band pop. Again, this could be forgiven if it weren't compounded by the other faults... but alas. In particular, 'On the Other Side' is composed of a string of painful clichés, my favorite being "...wanna feel you love me at the speed of sound..." The music for this song also reminds me a bit of Savage Garden, a popular boy band when I was eight. While I like the music for "Wrong Side of Love," I'm not sure I understand what that means, and the song doesn't paint a story that is vivid enough for me to understand, so I feel no attachment to the song. However, there are some songs that have some semblance to their prior works. 'Shot in the dark' is both catchy and passionate, with better lyrics than many of the remaining songs.

I forced myself to listen to this album enough times that I know every song by heart now. Most songs are catchy and the album is fluid. That said, I still feel that even the best songs on this album would be mediocre if they were on prior albums, and the worst songs are ones that I often skip or cringe at lyrically. I've never felt that way with Augustana's music before, so overall I am disappointed. I don't think I will buy any other albums they release without previewing them thoroughly first.

Whether you will like this album depends, I think, on whether you are a long-time fan of Augustana and what your expectations are going in for a first listen. I LOVED the country-rock style of their previous releases, and I thought their songwriting and instrumentation was simply phenomenal. Every track on Can't Love, Can't Hurt had its own signature sound, from the introspective "Twenty Years" to the pop radio friendly "I Still Ain't Over You", to bluesy tracks like "Dust". This is not a review of Can't Love Can't Hurt, but I say this to put into perspective why I was bitterly disappointed on the first listen of the new album.

The countryish tinge to their music has been all but stomped out, with only the barest glimmers of it on tracks like "Hurricane" and "Borrowed Time". The raspy voice of the lead singer (which I actually loved on the previous albums) has been polished up to the point that it is nearly unrecognizable. Pandora played "Steal Your Heart" when it first came out and I honestly thought it was a different band altogether before I looked at the computer screen. The other thing that I was sorely disappointed in was the quality of the songwriting itself, the best examples of which are songs like "Steal Your Heart" and "Borrowed Time", which repeat the main chorus line of the song no less than 26 times between them. It begins to feel like a broken record after awhile. There was just something about their music on previous albums that blended the lyrics seamlessly with variations in the music that went with it. That is sorely lacking here.

If you take a step back (or in my case, put the mp3s on a figurative shelf for awhile) and come back to the album without expectation of what you would find in a true Augustana release, the album is not bad. In fact, I've been listening to it for awhile as the songs are pretty catchy, even if they lyrics themselves are rather on the weak side. I will say the songs do tend to blend together as they all sound like standard pop radio fare. I don't mix them with previous Augustana tracks on playlists because the music styles are SO different. The reviewers noting that this album is from a different band are really not off the mark in the slightest. As a standalone pop album its not bad, but as a follow-up to some truly great previous efforts, this one kind of falls flat.
