Biographie de l'auteur

Monica H. Schaeffer, Ph.D., is a health psychologist who has conducted research and led workshops on stress and decision-making and stress management. She has been published in a number of professional journals on the effects of environmental stress, commuter stress, and illness severity. After studying stress in adults, both acute and chronic, Dr. Schaeffer recognized that children could benefit from possessing a repertoire of coping techniques to prevent the harmful effects of stress. In fact, the stories and techniques included in this book began taking shape when her oldest daughter communicated that she was not satisfied with simply having bedtime stories read to her and would exclaim, “tell me a story from your mind.” Currently Dr. Schaeffer is the president of the non-profit organization, VITAL, Inc. ( and facilitates workshops on ethical wills/legacy letters. Her hobbies include photography, travel, and museum hopping. Shelley R. Baker began working in and writing for the field of public relations and marketing after earning a B.S. degree in Public Communication from Boston University. She has extensive writing experience, including writing press releases, newsletters, articles, and stories. While navigating through the challenges of motherhood, Shelley was past president and served on the boards of directors for several community organizations. She most recently worked as the director of client and community relations for a certified public accounting firm. Shelley’s experience with children comes from years of raising her own and spending extensive time helping to care for her eight grandchildren. That, as well as her writing and communication background, put her in a unique position to collaborate on this book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Lunch Group/Small Group Resource 15 mai 2014
Par Jamie - Publié sur
I have been using Auntie Nellie's Magical Pockets with my small groups and it has been a fantastic resource. My students have been making their own magical pockets to go along with the story and parents and teachers have been giving me some great feedback. The students are engaged during the story and are able to generalize the skills and give examples of applications in their everyday life. I had a parent of at 5th grade student tell me how her son made an "Yes I can" reminder for her to keep in her pocket during a concert she was nervous about. She said "I don't know if I can do this", and he explained how she should instead say "Yes, I can!"

This is a great "story" for kids and "workbook" for parents. We are ALL too stressed today with the expectations for instant gratification (TV, video games, internet, smart phones, tablets), with the long commutes, with the rush to get kids ready, with most parents working. This book gives parents tools for helping small children learn how to cope with stress *themselves* and in a way, it also teaches us parents how to cope with stressors ourselves. The most important things we can teach our kids are our values and if dealing in a healthy way with stresses in life could be considered a value, it's high on the list. I think this book also teaches empathy (for older kids) as the children identify with Casey, they also become more considerate of the impact of stress on their friends, and probably even on adults. I've met Dr. Schaeffer (she gave a presentation for parents at my older son's school), and she's as enthusiastic and energetic and compassionate as one might think based on Auntie Nellie's strategies and thoughtful treatment of the main character Casey. Adore!!
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Memorable, Enjoyable, Helpful and Relatable 30 octobre 2013

We love Auntie Nellie's Magical Pockets. It is a Memorable, Enjoyable, Helpful and Relatable book! My son LOVES superheros so Casey is the perfect character to whom he can relate. My son is 4 1/2 years old and often experiences the same stresses and frustrations that Casey experiences. Auntie Nellie's strategies really do work!! Especially "count to 10 and try again". Although my daughter is only 2 1/2, even she looks forward to reading about Auntie Nellie and Casey each night....and the parent/teacher notes are great too! Thank you to Shelley and Monica for writing a "self-help" book for young kids and writing it in a way that they can easily learn and apply the strategies when they need them! We look forward to continuing to read and re-read about Auntie Nellie and Casey!
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Wonderful Book 29 octobre 2013

While reading this book to my 7 year old daughter, she became totally engrossed in the main character Casey's social dilemma's. You could see that it was very relatable for her and she was thrilled to be offered ways to deal with real life situations. It is written right at the childs level and as a result she asked me to read it over and over again to her.

She loves this book...I hope the authors write another book which offer advice and insite into other everyday situations that young ones encounter.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 my kids loved it! 7 novembre 2013

I first read this to my 5 year old son, who was amazed by the "Save the Day Bank" and "Count to 10 and Try Again Wheel". He also liked the "Yes I Can" chapter. We read a chapter a night so he could digest it and its good Father/Son bonding for us. The techniques are real life practical skills for a young child and the book is well written and relates well to kids. My girls, who are slightly older, loved it as well! Highly recommend!!
