"Hi you're an honest customer, and have just bought our product. We are nieve enough to think that forcing you to shell out another $50 for copyright protection you shouldn't need (because you already paid for the item), is going to stop others from breaking the encryption."
This is a scam, I purchased the required Ilok just over one year ago, and already it is on the fritz. What this means, is that I will have to PAY to send it to the ilok company so they can send me back another one. So, basically, I am paying for something I already purchased(the software), plus paying for the ILOK, plus paying to ship it back.
Worst of all, anything you have used the ILOK for, is now unusable until you get the new one back.
Oh, did I mention, If your Ilok is out of warranty, then you will have to PURCHASE ANOTHER ONE.
My advice is don't use products that require an ILOK.
No problem, you are still under warranty As you work your way through the iLok website and notice the incredible lack of meaningful information on the return process you begin to wonder if your connection has been hacked and you've been redirected to some 3rd world scam site who's hackers barely had enough English between themselves to piece this front together. Sadly, you come to the conclusion that this is indeed the iLok site. Hmmm... Support for Firefox versions above circa 2002 still pending.
A website that doesn't work with one of the world's most popular browsers. OK. You reluctantly reinstall Explorer just to visit iLok, just to return merchandise that should still work after 3 months. Moving parts? no. Reason for failure? unknown. Crap from China? Assumed, but this is sad by even these standards. You continue.
What's this? If you are under warranty everything will be okay? That's great. But wait, why then do you need your credit card info? Well, reading down the page will surely explain the- hmmm... no explanation. But here's something about ordering a backup iLok. Hmmm.."what is an iLok", you wonder. It's something to keep you from copying the software and giving it to all your friends. Software you bought. With your money. That you worked for. That the software company now has. And all you want. Is to use it. So- do you agree to purchase a "backup" iLok? A backup in case you can't prove you have the legal right to use the software you purchased because a 2 dollar piece of junk from China failed? You consider that you don't have a copy of your automobile title, which cost thousands of dollars. You feel confident that if the title were to be lost, you could prove the car was yours anyway. You consider that you only needed one lock on your locker in high school. You decide against this "backup" iLok, since you aren't really sure about the concept of paying for a backup of proof of ownership of something. Oh wait-it's encased in plastic and can be held in your hand. Maybe that makes it okay? No.
Still, the site insists on your credit card info to proceed with the RMA. Backed into a corner, you withdraw your wallet from your back pocket. In go the numbers. Now to stick some stamps on this piece of plastic and send it- whoah! The ilok site is recommending you use a carrier such as Fedex, else they can't guarantee your iLok has been received. Let's see, how many packages has the post office lost in your life? Quickly counting with your fingers, you realize the number is zero. Yet, you're scared now, they may say they didn't get it. OK. $15.00 to return something that barely weighs an ounce. Probably a week's pay to the poor worker in China who helped assemble the iLok.
You wait. Ah, at last, an email from iLok. They have recovered your licenses and you can download them to an iLok of your choice. Awesome, now you can- hey wait a minute. You don't have an ilok of your choice. Your iLok stopped working, so you sent it back for a replacement, or so you thought....What do they mean about recovering licenses, what about your replacement iLok? you didn't lose any licenses, iLok knows your licenses, the software company knows. What is going on here and what about the replacement iLok? Emails to iLok. No Reply.
So. 16 1 star reviews of the iLok and 16 5 star reviews. Make that 17 1 star reviews. Better Business Bureau? Perhaps. Attorney General letter? Better idea.
In the end, as disgusted as you are with iLok's business practices, you can't help wonder about the 16 Amazon reviewers that happily awarded 5 stars to a product they bought to prove they bought another product.
Unless of course you would like to pay: Zero Down Time, (Insurance)$30.00, plus License Recovery with iLok$49.95, plus Courtesy iLok $0.00 ( they don't charge you for replacing the piece of garbage) AND Expediency Fee of $100.00 plus Sales Tax: $4.43 plus Shipping estimate: $12.05(estimate because if you want it quick you'll pay more...what was the Expediency Fee for?) Subtotal:$196.43
What a scam! The technology is ridiculous. The customer service is ridiculous. Why are ProTools and other vendors subjecting their customers to this? My next move is to find a different software vendor if the replacement iLok doesn't work.
Nicely played AVID - ProTools - PACE iLok.
If (when) it fails you will jump through endless hoops to recover your licenses.
here was my experience.
1. ilok failed ($40).
2. could not transfer license to new ilok ($40).
3. Paid $30 for ZDT coverage
4. Was told I had a "cooling off" period
5. was required to pay ANOTHER $150 dollars to get temporary licenses to the software I have already paid thousands of dollars for.
Oh and they do not even have a phone number to call.
This company is total garbage.
DRM does not work. I don't believe for a second that this is saving Avid's business.
As others have said, the customer service seems to have been designed by a drunk and spiteful sadist. In many cases, I've had to actually pay to speak with a customer service person from Avid. The people who do eventually speak with customers do not (or pretend not to) understand words like "broken" or "software."
The actual hardware breaks on a regular basis. This last one seems to be on its last legs, and when it goes, I'm just selling off any and all of my remaining Avid gear and looking elsewhere.
