HASH(0x952e7b7c) étoiles sur 5 Sensible and pleasant way to change one's attitude toward working out and food 23 juillet 2012
Par AgnesaB. - Publié sur
Format: Broché
I am a devoted fan of Ballet Beautiful method/concept. I own both DVD's and almost all blast videos available online. No surprise I am an owner of the printed version of the book as well!

Why would I recommend this book to other girls and women - and not only to those who love ballet as I do?

First of all, the book is written in very pleasant, calm and sensible style. It is divided into three parts (these are divided into chapters).

The parts cover all you need for building some kind of regimen or just approach to your work out routine and food choices:

* mindset
* the actual work out (stretching exercises, the classic 60 minute workout and three 15-minutes blasts workouts: 1 for arms and 2 cardios). Here you also obtain some basic ballet terminology, few basic BB principles
* third part talks about the approach to food - shows what food choices are great, the essential philosophy here is the intuitive/instinctive and very sensible approach to food. I apprecciated the suggestions for breakfasts, snacks, lunches etc. There are also suggestions for how many times per week to work out (ideal week, a moderate and light week). You will also find usable and practical tips on how to deal with cravings etc. In the very end of this part and of the book itself you can find few quick and healthy, yet easy recipes provided by Mary Helen and her friends/family.

To sum it up:

* Strong points of the book:
- sensible and pleasant style of writing
- usable, practical information, no redundancy or fashionable information which would be annoying
- few new exercises also to those who already own the DVD's
- exercices are indeed challenging and targeted, very simple, I highly apprecciate that there is no need to use any special equipment and all positions are ,,doable"
- great approach to food, eating and great tips for how to cope with cravings
- the mindset part is just great - this topic is the key to become successful in one's goal of working out on regular basis

* What I would like to have in the book (subjective preferrations):
- the foreword by Natalie Portman could be more detailed about her own work out for the movie
- there is a sentence that there will follow some information on two different goals: losing weight and maintaning of the weight (p. 185 in UK version). I could not find it (maybe it is there somewhere?). Of course, I am able to figure this out by myself, just would like to know anything special - if there is anything special on this topic
- I would be glad if I could find more tips on how to combine BB workouts with other activities like running, swimming etc.(this was actually available on the blog, it's not in the book)
- there could be more exercises on arms (or few different ones than Swan Arms)
- I would be glad to have some tips for different body types here (e.g. what kind of exercises are great for people with not very slim legs or for those who have not very slim arms etc.)
- there could be some tips on regeneration or how to take care of one's joints (I guess working out few days a week on regular basis should be combined with some bodycare - maybe some supplements suggestions? Or other suggestions?)

Overall, I highly recommend this book and the program. I am glad this book does not flow in the fashion of any extreme trends/lifestyles. I consider it to be safe also for teenagers for its sensibility and focus on health and nutrition.

HASH(0x952e7bd0) étoiles sur 5 Amazing! This works because it's different! 1 juin 2012
Par Eliza T. - Publié sur

I've been doing Ballet Beautiful for just under a year and it's been amazingly transformative for me. This book embodies everything I love about Ballet Beautiful and Mary Helen. It's funny, optimistic, sensible and very challenging. The book is filled with all the exercises that helped me change my shape but it's also got the essential advice and support that helped me make those changes permanent. It guided me in remaking my way of thinking and about my body, food and exercise and maybe more importantly it revamped my confidence in the fact that I have the power to create new healthy habits in my life. This book talks to my whole person - mind and body! And it even gets into all those icky, negative feelings about bodies / food / accomplishment that we all get and that block us from making progress.

Also I find it so easy to stay positive and connected because of all the resources available in the book but also online at Ballet Beautiful anytime of day / night. That's made all the difference for me. It used to be so frustrating when life didn't allow me time to exercise, but now that I know don't have to run to the gym to get a great workout I feel confident that I can keep it up. And I've learned how to be realistic about setbacks, the kind of things I used to get so mad at myself about. I "move on" as Mary Helen advises. And guess what? It's working!

HASH(0x952ed024) étoiles sur 5 Enjoyable, effective ballet-inspired exercise system 28 janvier 2014

Note about me: I'm a former Yoga and Pilates teacher who prefers to work out at home.

I first heard about this program last year. I was intrigued and heard good things from people. I bought the Total Body DVD and got this book. For my money, while both are good investments, I'm getting more out of the book.

Some of the exercises are difficult to learn the first time around, particularly the standing exercises. Ballet is notoriously difficult to teach on paper; the fact that I could follow the exercises after a second review speaks to how well she did describe them. And I loved her concise reference sheet of ballet terms with descriptions and illustrations.

The bulk of the first program is best thought of as floor barre, but with a little bit of a twist. (And if you also want to think of it as a more elegant version of the some of the floor exercises women have been doing since the Fifties, you're excused.) Bridges, leg lifts and inner thigh lifts will be familiar to anyone who has taken a Pilates class in the last decade, and the abwork will probably remind you of some of the Lotte Berk/Bar Method/Core Fusion/etc. Bowers usually has you perform 4 sets of 8 reps, then pulses at the high point for the same number. Definitely more reps than in Pilates, but fewer than most of the barre work out there. What the book has that the videos don't is the Reverse Bridge (which Pilates practitioners might recognize as Grasshopper). While the Bridges work both the lower back and glutes, the Reverse Bridges call on those muscles as well as the upper back and call for more extension of the spine. Hugely important for all of us.

The standing sections or Blasts work well together as a cardio-sculpting workout. The most unusual (and arguably difficult to learn) section is the Swan Arms. If you're familiar with Classical Stretch you'll understand working your back and chest by moving your arms, but the movements are more fluid (and there are more reps!). This section is surprisingly difficult, but very effective- my shoulders fatigued frequently during the exercise, but afterward I was very aware of my upper back and shoulder muscles. The other standing sections incorporate Plies, Tendus and Arabesques to raise the heart rate and sculpt the lower body and even the abs. These sections are really tough- if this doesn't make you sweat, nothing will!

Although the Total Body DVD gives a great workout, the book is much more flexible and has more options. I enjoy being able to alternate between the two workouts, and both lend themselves to being easily split up if you don't have time for a full program. (And I don't know about you, but if I have only a couple of minutes to squeeze in some exercise, it's much quicker for me to open a book than it is for me to load up my dvd player.)

Participants should note that this is not the equivalent of going to a ballet class. As the author has noted in interviews, she's not teaching dance; she's helping people use the muscles dancers use when they dance that contribute to their signature shape. Lots of work for the buttocks, calves and the gluteus medius, but not a lot for the quads (my hip flexors are very grateful). There's also a lot of stretching throughout, and I credit that with why I've emerged without any delayed soreness but still feel like I've had a vigorous, satisfying workout.

Highly recommended for home exercisers.

Mary Helen Bowers has a kind, conversational way of writing that gently shows you a healthy way of looking at food and exercising. She emphasizes a clean, well rounded diet and no calorie counting or food obsession. Her attitude of seeing food as fuel is refreshing and effective.
Then there's the workout. My goodness, does it work. Sure, i wouldn't exactly do it in front of anyone (the bridge series looks like you're reverse humping the floor tbh) but you definitely feel it working just where she says it will.
I've been using her dvd (the classic 60 minute one) for a few weeks and i've noticed my legs and arms literally changing shape. No amount of lunges or squats have ever toned my thighs like her workouts do. Plus i move much more gracefully and elegantly (my girlfriend has even commented on that!)
So all in all, buy this book! Then buy the accompanying dvd because it's beautiful and helps you understand the movements. Together, they'll change your life.

When I first heard about Ballet Beautiful, a light bulb turned on inside of me and I knew, right there and then, that I would have finally found the perfect solution to my health. I was, and still am, just an ordinary girl who, like many other females, score high and low for an exercising and dieting regime. I've tried going to the gym, I've tried doing P90x, I've tried running on the treadmill in a basement, I've tried jogging in my neighborhood, I've tried fitness trends like Zumba dancing and so on. And it always ends the same: Either I hate the way my body started to look, or it got too difficult and I would become commitment-phobic and just drop the regime, much to my deep disappointment. What really burns me is that I can't ask people nowadays on how to lose weight without looking bulky because then I'll get verbally assaulted, that "women cannot bulk up", that I'm being ridiculous. Well, I did P90x, and I bulked and looked strange. As a soft spoken, sensitive introvert, it just doesn't fit my personality, if that makes sense. I wanted to look lean, limber, and very much feminine. I thought I'd never find the solution... and then I brought this Kindle.

I read about her workouts in the book and I knew I had to grab her DVDs. They were all surprisingly challenging, despite her moves that look deceptively simple, but they are also very fun and the results are losing weight, dropping inches everywhere, becoming firm and toned, and still keeping your womanly curves without the bulges and cellulite. I look and feel like a princess the more I do these. Mary's first couple of chapters is her talking about the mindset- that no, you do NOT have to do her workouts perfectly, and that you do NOT have to kill yourself every single day doing a lot of working out to get results. She taught me that, hey, its okay to mess up and not workout for an entire day or even a week because of life circumstances. She taught me that I should forgive myself, brush myself off the dirt, and just workout the next day with her customizing workouts. This is such a huge relief for me. So much of the workout culture is all about shaming other people and pushing people too hard. I don't do that mess anymore, and I remain flexible thanks to Mary.

Her diets are amazing! I have found new dishes and food that are nutritionally dense that I've never heard of before! Mary is so right about eating a healthy, balanced meals, and to not stress yourself too much over sizes or calories. Remember that not every calorie is equal. Ever heard of "empty calories"? Yeah, it's true: Tons of unhealthy, processed foods, like diet sodas, are nothing but empty calories and have a ton of sugars and dangerous chemicals that knocks your entire body system off. People become overweight and obese, not just because of how much calories they put inside their bodies, believe it or not... but because a lot of people are eating THE WRONG FOODS. When you eat the wrong foods, you will always feel crabby, moody, hungry, sickly, and experiencing sugar spikes that will have you eating the entire house and STILL not feeling satisfied! Mary's meals are nutritious, clean, wholesome, and has a wonderful balance of healthy carbs, fats, and proteins, so that you will always feel and look your best. Let go of the numbers for once and start looking at the ingredients. When you eat good food, you will always feel contently full and satisfied, and you'll be able to just live life in peace. She preaches about never going to the extreme just to get results; you can still enjoy chocolate, alcohol, coffee, red meat, and other sinful foods, you just have to learn to pick healthy alternatives rather than restricting yourself from the things you love. I'll never give up on chocolate, but I can give up my favorite Snickers bar for a healthy alternative, which is dark chocolate that is rich with antioxidants and a high percentage of cocoa, for example!

Mary Helen Bowers, despite her seemingly glamorous life, is a down to earth lady just like you and I, and she is never arrogant or proud. She always stays humble and knows the reality of how busy life can be for everyday people. All she asks of you, is to stay flexible and open- If you're a mother who also has a full time job, all she asks is 15-30 minutes of working out during the evenings when the kids are doing homework and you can have time for yourself. If you're a med student deep in stress, all she asks is 15 minutes here and there to keep you healthy and alert. If you're juggling so many things at once, all she asks is that you plan your healthy meals accordingly so that you'll always munch on healthy snacks while running around with tasks. If you can stay flexible and forgiving of yourself, I promise you, you will see amazing results, and you will feel immensely proud of yourself. Just ask me! :-) My body is looking more and more amazing each day!
