Présentation de l'éditeur

It is the day after Aimee Patterson’s high school graduation. College beckons, as does her dream of becoming an engineer. On an early evening walk, her cocker spaniel charges into the woods on the other side of the pond. Aimee trails after him, and in the stillness of that forest the unthinkable happens. She becomes paralyzed and watches in horror as her hands vanish before her eyes.

Waking to the sound of voices, Aimee realizes that she has been kidnapped. Little does she know how far away from home she is, though. In an attempt to flee her captors, she launches from their confines only to freeze at the view outside the window. The sky is black and filled with stars, and in the distance is a familiar blue globe. The planet Earth.

A group of humans forced to flee their planet after an epidemic destroyed their civilization now travel the galaxies in search of an antidote. Retrieving samples of plant life from every solar system, on this occasion Aimee was accidentally seized instead.

Aimee must learn to avoid the advances of an awkward young scientist who seems intent on dissecting her, as her own fascination turns to the exotic young warrior, Zak. Having fallen in love with Zak, she is now torn with the decision to return to Earth or live beyond the stars.

"Brilliantly done. A lovely debut to the young adult genre." - Romancing The Book Reviews

Ok, so for a young adult book the character was more mature that most. I'm in my mid 20s and I run far away from any book summary becoming in "17 year old...." but I could ignore her age and get into the book. Now the bad. I was reading about half way into the book when I noticed it seemed like one long day. In fact, except for the last chapter it was set up as one day. Midway through the book others was talk about time but the author randomly stated something about two years passing but it was confusing as I was trying to figure out (1) I thought only a day had past not years (2) was it only earth that 2 years passes or 2 years on the ship because there was talk of time moving differently on the ship.

Overall it was good book for a young adult novel, a ok book as a science fiction romance. This book is set up as part of a series and ended as such. I got this book for free so definitely worth a try if you take the plot with a grain of salt.

Don your intergalactic spacesuits, BEYOND by Maureen A. Miller will take you to unknown galaxies and introduce you to some odd beings. This young adult science fiction novel is a fantastic read, and I give it 4 stars.

In the novel, seventeen-year-old Aimee Patterson is accidentally abducted by aliens while out for a walk, and due to the rotation of the galaxies, can't be returned to her planet for five Earth years. While on the Guardian ship Horus, Aimee meets a lot of people--some really handsome, some creepy--and has some interesting experiences. When the ship is affected by a disease, Aimee must work with Warrior Zak to find a cure.

I really liked this novel. For someone who hasn't read much true science fiction, BEYOND is a great introduction into the genre. The technological ideas will blow your mind. I imagined a much more complex plot with schemers and master manipulators, but in the end the plot was straightforward and simple. Whether that added to or detracted from the book, I'm not sure; I enjoyed reading it either way.

I would have liked some more distinction of time on the ship. Understandably, time on the ship is not the same as Earth time, but based on Aimee's routine, it seems like she is only away from Earth for three Earth nights before being returned. The reader only knows of 2 times that Aimee sleeps and one meal; yet Aimee is told that it will be something like an Earth month that she has to remain on the ship before being able to return to Earth, and her body grows into a more adult womanly figure. Time paradoxes aside, the passage of time in the novel was not clearly illustrated, and so it was a tad difficult to get my bearings.

The romance was sweet and a great illustration of the sublime nature of teenage love, but the issue with time makes it difficult for me to determine whether the declarations of love are believable.

On the technical side, the pace was well done, and there weren't any grammatical issues that detracted from my enjoyment of the book.

Overall, this was a great novel, and I look forward to reading the next in the series, telling us what happened to Zak after Aimee is returned to Earth.

Originally I thought this would be a stereo typical band geek lands the quarter back story line, but I was wrong. Instead, while Amy happens to be a geek it is her self confidence and intelligence that get her into and out of some sticky situations. Zak, the handsome leader type, is also an outsider in the homogenous world of the Horus. He not only see's Amy's beauty but he also is impressed with her wit and quick thinking. By the time I got to chapter 3 I couldn't stop reading until I was finished with the book. The world building is good, it doesn't over power the story, and the characters are deep. I very much look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I am only half way though the book, I'm hoping it gets better. I'm frustrated with Aimee's stupidity. What person would climb aboard a ship (angel thing) and start messing about when she's only been with the Horus for such a short time? She doesn't seem impulsive, but some of her actions make her seem 10 rather than a girl about to start engineering school. I'm hoping she grows, quickly, because right now she seems selfish and childish.

I finished the book. It got better, but I didn't think it was great

4.5 stars First reviewed at New Adult Addiction - I received a free copy from Book Monster Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a nice surprise. Not only was it well written, but it kept me captivated the entire time. Miller’s writing flows easily through the story as she describes how Aimee, a young teenager from Earth must cope with the fact that she was just abducted from Earth and has no chance of returning for five years.

Supposedly the “abduction” was a mistake caused by a young scientist who was on Earth to gather plant life that might be critical to the survival of his race. The aliens on the Guardian ship Horus, also human-like – and just let me stop here because I’ve seen a lot of readers say human-like aliens are a lack of imagination on the author’s part. But I have to disagree. As a scientist, the human body plan makes a lot of sense. Why wouldn’t it be duplicated? Anyway – the aliens on the ship Horus are human-like and I appreciated that.

So Aimee has been picked up for some nefarious reason by a young man named Salvan, who seems to have an infatuation with her. His job is to find a cure for a devastating disease that has wiped out the home world of these transient beings. And this is why they are traveling the universe—stopping by as many planets as they can to collect plant life, desperately seeking a cure.
But there is another young man on the ship – and this guy looks and acts different form the rest. Zak is a warrior. He’s standoffish (aren’t all the good ones standoffish!) and he’s gorgeous. He feels an attraction to Aimee, and Aimee feel the same way back. They have a few adventures together, but always there is that damn Salvan meddling in Aimee’s life.

This was book was very good. If you’re into SF I’d highly recommend it. It’s got just enough adventure and romance to keep you interested in just about every way possible. The new technology introduced is interesting, and the twists at the end are quite unexpected. I won’t give any away, but the second book is set up perfectly. And best of all – all three books are out right now.
