Présentation de l'éditeur

Artemus Black. Perennially down-on-his-luck Hollywood PI whose Bogie fixation is as dated as his wardrobe. With an assistant who mocks him relentlessly, an obese cat that loathes him, a romantic life that's deader than Elvis, money problems, booze, nicotine, and anger management issues, how much worse can it get? When he takes a case that's supposed to be easy money working for a celebrity whose colleagues and surrounding paparazzi are dropping faster than interest in the star's big comeback, the cakewalk turns ugly and Black finds himself in a web of deceit, betrayal, and murder - and bad hair days.

The first in a series from bestselling author Russell Blake, Black is a detective mystery with a difference that fans of the genre are sure to enjoy.

Q&A with Russell Blake

Q: Why delve into detective mystery? You're an action/adventure thriller author.

RB: I've always loved books by authors like Michael Connelly, Elmore Leonard and Raymond Chandler. The resolute PI up against crime, danger, and beautiful dames. I got this idea about six months ago for a Hollywood PI who's down on his luck, barely hanging on, dealing with personal issues, tormented by everyone around him...but all of it colored with a really dark sense of humor. I wanted a kind of black cynicism that scathingly comments on the show biz lifestyle, a la Get Shorty, but fresh - something that hadn't been done before. So I gave it whirl, and enjoyed the characters and the plotting so much that I've written the second in the series already, and am finishing the third.

Q: Tell us about Black. What makes him tick?

RB: He's kind of a loser. He's got anger management issues he's in therapy for, but it's questionable how well that's going. His therapist is a hack, and somewhat mean spirited, so that's not helping. He got screwed over by his young wife back in the day when they were both in a band that went huge - only Black got into a bar fight the week before the beginning of the big tour and broke his hand, so they replaced him. And then his wife had an affair with the attorney who wound up handling the divorce, as well as doing him out of most of his royalties. So he's a bitter guy. A string of loser entrepreneurial disasters left him struggling, and a PI as a last resort career. Watching a character like that go through the day, where the world is against him, is just...funny. In kind of an evil way. Those with a similar sense of humor to mine will find it a hoot. Others will probably think I've lost my mind. They're probably both right, but that's a different story...

Q: Give us some background about the supporting cast.

RB: Let's see. We have Roxie, who is the assistant from hell. She's extremely dry and deadpan, and she gives Black unending crap whenever she can. She's hot, a singer in an art rock band, about 17 years younger than him w/full-sleeve tats, and delights in tormenting him about everything from his vices to his wardrobe. There's Mugsy, who's an obese stray cat that adopted Black, and who barely tolerates him - but loves Roxie. Black's parents, who are filthy rich throwbacks to the sixties whose harebrained business enterprises wound up making them ten fortunes while Black scratches out a living, recur in each book. They're all about peace and love and positive energy and the Summer of Love, and drive him batty - and further enrage him with their success, which he views as a personal sleight from a universe that hates him. His LAPD detective buddy, Stan, is even more cynical than he is, and their interactions are some of my favorite bits in the books. And of course, there's a cast of characters that could only happen in L.A., which seasons the whole story in a way that's distinct to the place.

Q: What's next? More BLACK books?

RB: You betcha. I foresee a bunch of them. I've never had this much fun with characters in my life, so expect to see more where that came from...

HASH(0x8a4dbfe4) étoiles sur 5 Score for cat ladies! 11 septembre 2013

I've read the Jet series and the Assassin series (my favorite) and looked forward to the BLACK series as it is lighter. What a funny book this is. It's filled with a cast of colorful characters that are memorable. I found myself laughing most in the scenes between Black and his police officer buddy Stan. My favorite people were Black's parents, Spring and Chakra. They're hysterical. The best part was how everything goes their way because they think positive thoughts, and how it infuriates their son, Black, who has underlying anger issues, and tends to attract mainly negative things.
I also found it refreshing to see cats featured in this book, as this author is a known dog lover. Glad to see he's finally written something for the cat ladies.

Artemus Black is a PI with issues, which might have stemmed from being named after the weasel of a sidekick of the main character from a crappy TV show, the name he despises. He is fast approaching the middle age, and he has no savings, having failed spectacularly at every business venture he has been in. He is always broke and as a consequence, his love life is nonexistent. He has a cat who hates his guts, an assistant who hates his fashion sense and just about anything that has to do with him, a shrink who seems crazier than he is, hippie parents who insist on calling him by his given name despite his extreme dislike for the said name. The only good thing in his life seems to be the enduring bromance with his friend, Stan, in LAPD. But his luck is about to change, having been hired by a big Hollywood star... or is it?

BLACK is, again, very different from Russell Blake's usual offerings. And, again, I sound like a parrot. Because I think it's pretty much what I say about every new series he starts. It's a very light read for a Russell Blake book and wicked funny. Very much like GERONIMO BREACH, which dealt with a serious subject matter with much humor, but BLACK is lighter and funnier.

I highly recommend this book to two kinds of people. People who are depressed should read this book. It will make you happier. People who are not depressed should read this book. It will keep you from getting depressed.

I haven't been this excited by a new series in a long time. I've read five or six Blake books, which were all very good, but he absolutely nails the hard-boiled genre. He has a knack for creating memorable characters and the main character Black and his assistant will not be forgotten anytime soon. I've always enjoyed Blake's humor, but the dialogue between the two aforementioned characters is hysterical. Finally - as usual, Blake moves the book along at a nice pace with enough twists, turns, and adventure to keep any reader engrossed. I can't wait for the next one in this series.

Having read everything that Russell has written I was skeptical in the change of format but I have to say Russell has done it again. Black is a fantastic novel. The character development is top notch. Plenty of plot twists and turns. Lot of funny dialog, especially with Roxie (his assistant). You feel so bad for Artemus Black, he is such a sad sack. Under that sad sack though is a first rate investigator and an all around nice guy.

I will warn you, this book is not a typical Blake book. It will start out a tiny bit slow but it really picks up steam and in the end I could not put it down.

I am really looking forward to the next installment.

HASH(0x8a9b4354) étoiles sur 5 A great, new character... again 9 septembre 2013

Russell Blake is a master in creating great characters, and great series based on them. Last year with JET and now with Artemus Black.
The hard-boyled style is a bit different from his previous works but he has no problems mastering this genre. It could even compete with some of the classics.
The prose and plot are fast as usual and the characterization of the main characters is enough detailed, but more background will be surely added in the future episodes.
Being the first in a series, this novel left me wanting for more.
