I LOVE THIS CD!

This is the most captivating CD of Bach's music that I have heard in many years. I have recommended it to all of my friends and have bought multiple copies to give as gifts. Both Lucy Russell and John Butt are at the top of their games and clearly know this music inside-out. It is obvious from the first few notes that both artists have lived with these sonatas for many years and know exactly the character they intend to express in each movement, each section, each phrase, each note. Russell's playing shows such personality, sensitivity, humor, restraint, passion, joy--it's all there! Her command of the instrument and understanding of the music is breathtaking. She and John Butt are a perfect pair--the harpsichord sounds rich and brilliant--I hope these two team up again. Production values are also extremely high;the recording quality is magnificent; the 2-CD case is beautifully designed. Having listened to Bach for more than 30 years now (and having played his music too), I feel that I heard a bright, new dimension of this composer through Russell's interpretations. Full of intelligence, warmth, humanity.

I'm afraid I am entirely unable to agree with Mr Thomas's assessment, nor empathise with his boredom threshold. To me this is scintillating violin playing: energetic and risky in the faster movements, subtly shaded and deeply felt in the more contemplative moments. I’ve heard rather more obviously hard-line, “purist” Bach playing than this! Ah well, always a matter of opinion, of course. But – judging by all the media reviews I consulted before obtaining my own copy – it is Mr Thomas (rather than I) who seems to be alone in his views…. Buy it and be enthralled, by BOTH players – not to mention JSB himself!

I've nothing but unreserved praise for this collection of the Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichod. I've had the music for months and played it a few times. However, it was only while listening and doing nothing else that I got into the beauty of Butt and Russell's contribution. I'm not a purist and wouldn't know how to be. For me, and I imagine many like me, one playing of these piece can be quite unlike some other and I wouldn't be able to enter an opinion about which one is closer to JSB's intention. No, to me when I listen to Butt and Russell, I sense that they experienced a certain amount of joy in, together, playing music that they obviously know so well. There is an unmistakeable power and energy that surfaces even in the slower Sonatas. Prior to today, the Pinnock Podger work on the same Sonatas was my go to set, now it's a toss-up between those two and the Butt Russell work. Great fun.
I'm not always happy to hear our current intrepretation of what we think ...

I'm not always happy to hear our current intrepretation of what we think about how they may played music during Bach's lifetime. Sometimes we can create something truly boring. I find the violin here played note perfectly but to me, seemingly almost without phrasing and without tremolo. It sounds, to me, as though she is bored but know she must not be. However, the harpsichord accompaniment to these sonatas is some of the most exciting playing I have ever heard. WOW! I bought this CD for the accompaniment alone.
