Challenge to access narrated routine but great once there

I bought the video of this title in the 1990's when I first experienced back pain. I got my pain under control and the video sat on the shelf. This year, my pain needed help again and I returned to this video and it worked so well, I decided to get the DVD to ensure I had access for the long term. I returned the first DVD since I couldn't get beyond the promotional clips of the postures. The replacement DVD had the same problem so I took more time to figure it out. Unlike any of my other DVD's, this one does not start at the beginning and after promotional clips, go to a menu screen. Instead it rolls over and over through promotional clips, which is probably why some reviews complain there is no narration and postures end quickly and abruptly change to new postures. After trying various alternative start routines, I finally discovered that to get beyond the promotional clip routine, I needed to manually select "menu", then hit "play", then select "next" twice to get to the narrated, correctly paced routine. I feel sorry for those who get this DVD without knowing what they SHOULD be seeing and then finding a way to get there. I am glad I figured it out because this DVD addresses my back issues so well.
Don't knock it until you really understand it...

As a lifelong yogini, and having studied a number of various schools of thought / as well teacher training, I can only say Rodney Yee is one the finest and most dedicated yoga teachers in the industry today; his practice is based in the B.K.S Iyengar method. While many people complain about the use of props in this video, the props are a mainstay of Iyengar yoga in many poses. They are only there to get you to position yourself the right way so that the poses can work. But make no mistake, Rodney is quite able to execute these poses perfectly without props, and that should be every yogi's goal at some point in their practice. Also, sitting on a chair allows the beginner to focus more on how the pose should feel in the body, rather than the fear of "am I doing this right?" or "I'm falling!", both of which can interfere with your concentration and the goal at hand. I would say that this video is not necessarily for a rank beginner, but could be with the help of a friend, teacher or someone trained in how the poses should be done; that includes alignment, look, feel, etc. I've given this video as gifts to (and assisted) many people with bad backs and once they understand how the poses are done, they are amazed at how great they feel after they've completed a session. Lastly, I have a funky back myself, courtesy of a teenage injury many, many years ago, so whenever it begins to act up, I pull out this video. When I'm done I swear I can't believe how good my back feels, every time, no matter what. Of course, everyone's conditions are different and you have to find the method, the teacher, the practice that's right for you before you ditch the video outright. Keep looking if this one doesn't work; doesn't mean it's bad, it just didn't work for you. And remember even bad yoga is probably better than no yoga at all...what's the alternative looking like?
Review of Yoga for Beginners by Rodney Yee

After a back problem that I had, I did the routine of massage, chiropractic treatments, Ice/Heat...you name it. Nothing worked. I had taken pride in the fact that I was always healthy. I did Ballet, Ballet conditioning, and Barre work, and felt proud I was so in shape. It was after my back problem that I realized that my lower back was weak. This DVD has been very helpful...........of course I'm feeling my back because of the work I'm doing with Yoga, but I don't have the awful spasms in my low back anymore. With that said, I do the (asanas) poses to my bodies limit, not Rodney Yee! I'm listening to my body's inner voice and only doing the poses to the point in which I can. It is the baby steps that are the hardest for me, because I'm so competitive. Slowing down, being mindful, and breathing have been very helpful for me. I wish you success in your journey to becoming whole, and healthy. My hope is that this review is helpful to you.
Requires a Stationary Chair

I've been a yogi for 15 yrs. Rodney Yee is one of my favorite yoga instructors. Got this for my daughter who's been in a car accident and has baxk issues. Good video, but it doesn't tell you that you require a stationary chair for most of the exercises. Not everyone has that kind of chair anymore, and I don't necessarily want to keep one in my yoga room. But if she'll do the video, I will. Good price, fast delivery.
and being new to yoga I thought Rodney Yee is considered the grandfather of yoga so it must be great right, but I'm very disappo

I was excited to order this video as I have back pain, and being new to yoga I thought Rodney Yee is considered the grandfather of yoga so it must be great right, but I'm very disappointed with this video, 1st of all it has no step by step narration, he is performing yoga on the beach, each scene cuts from one pose to another without allowing you to follow along smoothly. It does has soothing music however I was equally disturbed that there is an offer to joina his yoga club to get step by step instructions for a 10 day tree trial! I feel like I just gave him money without delivery, there is also a disturbing template with the Back Care Yoga title on it so it is distracting and you cannot see the full pose, WTW????
