Présentation de l'éditeur

Balkan Caesar is the compelling story of a group of Americans of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) who fought the Germans behind enemy lines in war-torn World War II Albania. Based on a true story, the Americans, led by Captain Tom Stevens, bonded with the French educated Communist Partisan leader Enver Hoxha to defeat the Nazis and liberate the country. Precursor of the CIA, the OSS broke with Hoxha and his Stalinist regime after the war, and after Stevens fled the country after getting caught up in a tangled three way love affair with Hoxha and his mistress. Hollywood actor Sterling Hayden of the OSS and British actor Anthony Quayle of the SOE are real life characters in the book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Balkan dramas 3 mai 2009

I thought this was a fine racy story of the world of the OSS recruits who were suddenly drawn from civilian life in and around Boston to the dangerous adrenalin-charged world of irregular warfare against the Axis Occupiers in Albania in World War II. In an organisation that was the direct forerunner of the CIA they were sent to free Albania from Axis domination, but soon found themselves in a whirlpool of conflicting loyalties and complex conflicts as the Partisans under their Caesarist leader, Enver Hoxha, sought to establish a communist state after the liberation.
There are many finely drawn characters and a gripping narrative, but underneath the author's deep knowledge of the period as a historian is also at work, and in filmic and gripping scenes all the contradictions of the period come out. It seems to me to be crying out to be made into a movie.

Loved this action-packed page-turner, written with a journalist's eye for detail and an historian's grasp of the facts. It includes a chilling portrait of the young Enver Hoxha, the "Balkan Caesar", as he is helped to power by the OSS in World War II Albania.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Highly recommended, a very revealing piece of American and Albanian history. Well written and absorbing with many surprises. 28 juin 2015

I truly enjoyed reading about the American soldier who was sent to Albania during the latter part of World War 2, to work with Communists against the invading Nazi regime. His supportive role of Communist leader Enver Hoxha was meant to enhance communications between British and American forces in Albania and Italy who were on the Communist side during this part of the war, strategizing to defeat the Nazi army. His fluency in Albanian language and culture was the bridge between Hoxha and the Allies. The Albanian people were pro-American and cooperated with Balkan Caesar (Hoxha) and his American aide. This is one of the least-known battles of World War 2 that deserves to be in history books, but is not. The end of the war brought Americans home and there was little help from the Army as they dwindled their forces dramatically, leaving many without a job. The Albanian American who so heroically helped fight off the Nazis in tiny Albania was among those and he tragically took his own life. A must read, for anyone to understand the Albanian culture and how complex the Balkan experience became in later years.

The good: Why hasn't this been made into a movie? I consider myself knowledgeable about history, particularly World War II history, but I never knew US soldiers fought alongside Albanian partisans. This is a well written book reminiscent of works by Stephen E. Ambrose.

The not so good: The book is full of typos and misspellings. Some look like the result of fat-fingering keys or missing a key. Others were just plain wrong such as "lightening" instead of "lightning". It was a unneeded distraction to an otherwise well written book.

It was good. I think I liked it most because we have just been to Albania and had been to many of the places mentioned in the book. It was good, fast reading.
