Marisa is Latina, but she may be partly Latina, and partly African-American. She DOESN'T have an articulated torso, but her shoulders, elbows, wrists and knees are articulated. Her dark brown eyes glance to the side, and she wears peachy eye makeup, pink lipstick, and peachy blush.
THE GOOD: Marisa seems to embody facial qualities that could be Latina and/ or African-American, and she represents the extremely light end of the skin tone spectrum, so that non-Caucasian girls who are super fair-complected can have a doll that looks like them.
Marisa's hair is super silky, and it's styled in such a way that little girls can give Marisa every hairstyle from a career woman flip to Dorothy Gale's famous braids.
Her outfit is pretty, too, and fairly modest, if a little unrealistically tight; it almost reminds me of a 1920s-style outfit, conjuring images of Deanie Loomis.
THE BAD: I personally find that Marisa's face has an almost sly, mean look to it, but that may be because of her side-glancing eyes; from a certain angle, EVERY Barbie can look sly and mean.
Marisa's one major factory flaw is her slightly uneven eyes, but she doesn't look SUPER bad.
THE UGLY: Okay, so Mattel COULD have allowed poor Marisa to "walk"...IF they'd bothered to make her SKIRT a wee bit less "slutty" (TIGHT)! I mean, what would it have hurt to have let Marisa "walk" like a normal woman, instead of FORCING her to barely be able to "hobble" along down the road?
RECOMMENDATIONS: I CAN recommend this doll to people who like Latina and African-American dolls, and for people who wish to diversify their doll collections. I CANNOT recommend this doll to young doll enthusiasts, as it is MUCH too easy for a younger child (7 and under?) to get their fingers caught in the fronts of Marisa's knee joints when they are straightening Marisa's knees back out, after having bent them.
IN CONCLUSION: Marisa is a beautiful, unique addition to the So In Style line, and she looks lovely in Baby Phat's clothing!
