Whether you fondly remember playing Basic D&D in your youth and want to relive that or you are an experienced gamer who wants to try out an OSR game with a very small rules footprint you really can't go far wrong with Basic Fantasy. The pdf is available free and the print version is so cheap it's amazing.
I found myself trying to choose between Basic Fantasy and Labyrinth Lord and (other than the price) what finally sold me on this was that Armour Class followed the ascending D&D 3/Pathfinder model (starting at 10 and then going up) rather than the old school descending system. It's so much easier to add bonuses to a dice roll and see if that betters the opponents AC than it is to roll, add bonuses and then look it up to see if it hits a -2 AC.
Not sure what else to say, I wanted an OSR system to try out and am very happy with my purchase. I've used the system to run a group through an old AD&D adventure (Unhallowed Ground) and found it very easy to use. The group had a great time and I'm looking forward to using it on some traditional dungeon delves in the future (probably ones from Dyson's Dodecahedron).
