For anyone who is SERIOUS about losing weight, this book is a must read. It's not another diet. It's a book on how to successfully use a diet to lose weight and keep it off by learning to think like a skinny person. You get to pick the diet. Then she tells you what you need to do to make it work. Reading the book, doing the exercises and following the diet you chose takes a lot of time and effort. While I was perusing the reviews to decide whether or not to buy it, one person who gave it one star said, "It's too much work. It's basically taking on a new job." This is the review that sold me on the book. I knew she wasn't going to try to sell me some magic wand that would end up being bogus. The way I see it, if someone isn't willing to put in the work they just don't want it bad enough. The author of this book is realistic and her recommendations are brilliant. Two of the biggest problems I have struggled with is not being able to resist some delectable I know I shouldn't eat. And I was terrified of being hungry. She has solutions for both these issues and a lot more. She offers realistic ideas for going out to dinner and being on vacation (yes, you can still have fun!) Here's the bottom line: If you're going to go to the effort to try and lose weight, do yourself a favor and set yourself up for success first. I wish I'd known about this book years ago. It would have saved me a lot of frustration.

I have been meaning to write this review for several years now. This book is the singular reason I was finally able to lose 35lbs and I still use it as a resource to keep me from gaining the weight back. In the beginning, I just wanted to quit but I kept telling myself "what is the alternative? to keep gaining weight every year and be unhappy that I can't fit into my clothes? Just follow the day-by-day tasks and the weight will take care of itself". Those day by day tasks allowed me to 1) focus on the simple steps instead of the weight I wanted to lose 2) not give up when I fell off the wagon 3) learn to strengthen my "resistance muscle" 4) learn how to respond to cravings 5) learn the difference between hunger and the desire to eat 6) helped me with impulse-control (not just with food either) 7) recognize and respond to sabotaging thoughts (again, not just related to food).

Take heart - I bought this book about 5 years prior to my success, perused it, liked it but did not wholly commit myself to following the steps. Needless to say I did not succeed that first time. When I was at my most desperate moment I picked up the book again and I committed to follow the first 14 days. It was working, so I started over again and went through all 42 days and journaled all along the way and here I am - one of the success stories. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage.as (efklutz)

Very good program. Covers all aspects of what is required to succeed at losing weight and keeping it off. Daily tasks and to do lists keep me motivated and takes me one step at a time towards my goal. If you really want to learn why and how you have not been able to lose weight or keep it off then this is the book for you.

One wants to be VERY careful in making claims about the effectiveness of diet approaches, if for no other reason than because of yo-yo weight moves. So please take this testimonial with a grain (or kilo) of salt: using Beck's behavioral therapy approach, I have lost about 30 pounds in the last five months, fairly painlessly.

Beck's approach is to see dieting as a matter of skill, not will; of habits, not fad diets. She is entirely agnostic about the specific diet a reader chooses (other than being a reasonable and healthy choice); instead, the book is about how to make better choices and how to do it as simply and forcefully as possible.

For me, at least and thus far, it has worked.

This book is BY FAR the best book I've read on HOW to lose weight. It addresses every single area that generally keeps people from being successful and gives concrete steps on how to overcome common obstacles. I'm using this book along with weight watchers and it has been so incredibly helpful.
