Présentation de l'éditeur

Kerry Wilkinson's sensational Jessica Daniel series returns with Behind Closed Doors, as Jessica faces her darkest mystery yet.

Detective Sergeant Jessica Daniel has barely left her house in months, isolated away from friends and colleagues. She may have given up on herself but one man is sure she still has something to offer.

DCI Jack Cole gives her a chance at redemption: An opportunity to help a neighbouring force by discovering what is going on with a reclusive community living in a stately home in the middle of nowhere.

People are going missing, turning up dead with only a vague link back to the house. But can Jessica beat her own demons in time to find out exactly what's going on behind closed doors?

Biographie de l'auteur

Kerry Wilkinson's debut, Locked In, the first title in the detective Jessica Daniel series, was written as a challenge to himself and became a UK Number One Kindle bestseller within three months of release.

His three initial Jessica Daniel books made him Amazon UK s top-selling author for the final quarter of 2011. When Think of the Children followed in 2013, he became the first formerly self-published British author to have an ebook No.1 and reach the top 20 of the UK paperback chart.

Following Playing with Fire and Thicker Than Water, Behind Closed Doors is the seventh title in the Jessica Daniel series.

Kerry has a degree in journalism, plays cricket badly and complains about the weather a lot. He was born in Somerset but now lives in Lancashire, thus explaining the climate gripes.

After suffering the loss of her father, and then losing the baby she was carrying, Detective Daniel has been holed up at home for months. She's on leave from work and doesn't even know if she is ever going back. She has chased away the man she loves.

Her supervisor approaches her and says he has a job for her that will allow her to put her toes in without working with her entire team. A young man's body has been found .. badly beaten and strangled. The are working on the assumption that he had something to do with a possible cult in the area. He wants Jessica to go in under cover to see if there is anything she sees that might allow them to get a search warrant.

Reluctantly she lets herself be recruited and what she sees is extremely troublesome. Inmates .. which in essence they are... are mostly young girls. Their 'guru' for better title likes the young girls ...too much. His wife seems to be as brainwashed as the others. There are older men who do the hard work .. yard work, mechanics, etc. But they seem as dominant as the guru.

More deaths occur and its up to Jessica to find something ...anything ... that will help put these people away. It's only when facing personal danger that she realizes what she has walked away from. But is it too late for regrets?

Having read most of this series, this book is not my favorite. It's still good, it's suspenseful, but not quite so much as the others I have read. I did see a side to Jessica that's new, but her self pity got a little tiresome. Adam, the boyfriend, has the patience of a saint, but that too got old. I was hoping he would yell at her, slam a door, something that would show his emotional upheaval.

It's been a tremendously good series so far and I fervently hope it continues.

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digitl copy of this book. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This is one of my favourite series on Kindle I have read and enjoyed all of them thus far. Usually with a series book I say that at push it could be read as stand alone, but I personally think that you really shouldn't be doing this with this book, The main story will make sense as it is self contained but really this book is a little different from the rest of the series as it is more about Jessica personally.
In fact, when I started this book I wasn't sure that I hadn't missed out on a book or mis-remembered the previous as what I was reading didn't actually make much sense to me Jessica-wise. We start the book with Jessica living alone pretty much as a hermit. She has pretty much dropped out of life until one day her DCI comes knocking and offers her an undercover job with a neighbouring force. Although the nature of the job seems to be a little close to home, Jessica agrees to meet with her potential handler and finally accepts the job.
With the scene set, we start to find out what has happened to Jessica since the previous book. This is drip fed in occasional chapters inserted at appropriate moments during the rest of the story and follow what has happened to Jessica between the end of the previous book and the start of this one. At times, the two threads go hand in hand as the place that Jessica is investigating is full of other wounded souls / misfits also trying to make sense of life and seek some kind of comfort / acceptance.
For a series that can usually be described as a Police Procedural, this book goes way outside that comfort zone. Although some of them are mentioned or have small parts, favourites like Dave and Izzy are missing along with the bickering and banter that you usually find. I would say that this book is more a "coming of age" or turning point for Jessica - more about her own personal development rather than relationships with others - hence my recommendation to read as part of the series. The subject matter is also very dark and quite a bit scary with exactly how credible a plot line it is.
I believe that this book also marks the end of season one for this series - book series have seasons? I think that it is a really good, albeit very brave, way of doing this. Marking transition from the end of this part of Jessica's life/work etc before we see what season 2 has to offer her and I for one can't wait to see.

The back story of the main character is very strong but somehow the main crime story didn't hold up, even though this is fiction I found it unbelievable. However the overall series is excellent and I an already onto book 8 - I strongly recommend the series
