Présentation de l'éditeur

On Thursday, August 9, 1945, at two minutes past eleven in the morning, Nagasaki was wiped out by a plutonium atomic bomb which exploded at a height of five hundred metres over the city. Among the wounded on that fateful day was the young doctor Takashi Nagai, professor of radiology at the University of Nagasaki. Nagai succeeded in gathering a tiny group of survivors -doctors, nurses and students - and together they worked heroically for the wounded until they themselves collapsed from exhaustion and atomic sickness. Written when he lay dying of leukaemia, The Bells of Nagasaki is the astounding account of his experience. It is a deeply moving and human story.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Christian view of Nagasaki bomb by victim 1 octobre 1997

Format: Broché
The author's friends, colleagues and wife were killed instantly by the atomic bomb and he died of injuries after a few years leaving his children orphans. He was a Christian, a part of the Nagasaki Christian community which had experienced persecution from the time the Portuguese brought Christianity to the city. His view of God's provision as it relates to the horror of the bomb is very profound. I wish the book had provided supplementary information regarding the author's life and the Christian community in Nagasaki.

This is an excellent book. Along with his other book, "Song of Nagasaki" - these two books give the reader a personal portrait of life in pre- war and post-war Japan that is awesome....

5.0 étoiles sur 5 and compelling and mean a great deal to me as a devout Catholic 20 juillet 2015

It is inadequate to read only this book without reading also Fr. Paul Glynn's A Song for Nagasaki. Fr. Glynn gives the background of the Church in Japan. This answered many questions I had after reading Dr. Nagai's book. Both books were touching, inspirational, and compelling and mean a great deal to me as a devout Catholic. I have read both books several times. I am gratified that Takashi Nagai's story is being made into a movie and will wait impatiently for my chance to see it.

[The Bells  of Nagasaki]

This may be one of my all time top favorites.  Weird to think a description of experiencing an atomic bomb could be a fav, but there it is.  There is a brief introduction about what was happening with political leaders at the time, the decision making involved, to set the scene.  The book itself is an insider's story about the experience.  There are the descriptions of the specific physical occurrences as well as the psychological ones:  seeing the country you love defeated, addressing feeling and desires for revenge and moving beyond that.  The focus ends on the meaning of the event for the whole world rather than just those who experienced it.  The author was an amazing person who saw the importance of documenting the results with a scientific eye for the benefit of the medical world, as well as the religious implications.  There were a couple of pages addressing religion, from a perspective I don't share, but that seemed to be helpful for them.  I wish this was required reading for high schoolers and would love to have used it for my college classes.
