The reason I bought it was mainly to cut down on energy usage during summer. The AC normally has to battle it out with the stovetop, this item however greatly reduces the heat output which is exactly what I was looking for. During the winter months we'll still use the gas stove since it both cooks and heats but this little jewel will be heavily used during the warmer months.
If you're sitting on the fence about one of these like I was, go ahead and get one, you won't regret it.
I don't have gas in my kitchen so I want to get a full on, multi-burner induction cooktop at some point but I had no experience with induction cooking. I had some trepidation about plunking down $2k+ for something I might not like. I decided to look around for a portable unit, and based on prior Amazon recommendations I chose the BergHOFF.
It came, and I decided to test it by putting a couple of raw eggs in a cold pan and sitting it on the unit. It recognized my pan right away, and the eggs started cooking in less than a minute. I was done eating them before my old cooktop would have gotten the pan hot. When I took the pan off of the unit, it shut down in a couple of seconds as advertised. Then I decided to time how long it took to boil water in the only induction capable container I have, a 12" saucepan, which I filled nearly to the top. Bubbles started forming and breaking away from the bottom at four minutes, a full boil in seven minutes. At this rate, this thing will pay for itself in not too long.
I could put my hand on it afterwards, but it was definitely a bit hot. This was just from the pan getting hot and transferring its heat to the cooking surface. I'm sure it would have gotten hotter still if I had been cooking something at a higher temp for a longer period. Still, it was nowhere near as hot as old Bessie, my conventional cooktop, gets after cooking.
Bottom line, this cooktop is just awesome. I can't say enough about it. I makes me smile whenever I think about it, LOL. For me, most purchases are just ho hum, needed it/got it sort of transactions. Every once in a while, though, I make a purchase that changes the way I live in some way, and this is one of those purchases. I can have single pan meals in no time, it'll save on electricity, and I can probably postpone buying the full Bosch drop in induction cooktop for a good while.
By the way, to me the fan is no big deal at all.
One minor thing--I thought from the pictures that the glass top had a satin or matte finish, but it's shiny and a little slippery. The pan slides around a bit as I stir the food. No biggie, I've just learned to hold the handle as I stir.
This cook top is really useful and powerful for its size. I can boil a teapot full of water in less than a minute or perfectly slow cook an egg as well. Great control, fast to cool down and great power saver (the nature of induction appliances).
Counter to many other burners out there, these one is not loud at all, it's not silent either but its noise level is low in my opinion
(my wife concurs). Mind you, we live in the city so our opinion of noise could be different that yours if you live in the country where the only noise it the night sky (and maybe crickets).
We opted to buy 2 units rather than one double unit for usability reasons. In case one goes under will still have an available unit and in the case I need to use the counter for another cooking device, I can move one of the units away allowing me to manage my working space more efficiently.
The device has a very good build quality and it's very sturdy, it won't break easily. It is also very easy to clean.
My only issue with the device is its touch panel. It is too sensitive and you can easily change settings if you're not use to it.
I think to could have done a better job with the placement of the touch panel and to its sensitivity level. It's not a big issue as you eventually get use to it.
This is the perfect cook top for a small kitchen. I would recommend it to anyone with small counter space.
Be sure to check all your pots and with a magnet on the bottom before you buy it. If you're pots can't hold
a "frig" magnet on it's bottom, it will NOT work with induction cook tops and you'll have to buy and induction ready pots.
