If you love The Alan Parsons Project, this is a must have. Over 20 years ago, I was driving across the country with my mom to meet up with dad. On this trip, she said, "let's listen to some of your music." I played the cassett and she loved it.
This year, she asked me who that was we listened to driving, because that's what she wanted for her birthday! I sent it to her, and can say with confidence, that this collection is pleasing across generations and I highly recommend it!

This was always a fun group to listen to, years ago. Now I find that it is still a great group to listen to today. The same Alan Parson who compiled the Dark Side of the Moon for Pink Floyd, has put his almost best collection together on this disc. Well worth the money to own this!

I guess the only difference between this "Best of the Alan Parsons Project" and the other "Best of the Alan Parsons Project" also listed is this one is new and the other is used CDs. I paid the extra money and got this version. It played properly and had the same order as the old cassette "Best of the Alan Parsons Project." I can not complain about the CD, but I do wish Amazon would be give more detail when they have two CDs of the same subject matter.

The Alan Parsons Project. In the 1970s and 1980s, few people made progressive rock/pop better than the APP. These guys were masters led by Alan Parsons, who produced Pink Floyd's 1973 masterpiece 'The Dark Side of the Moon' and engineered on The Beatles' legendary 1969 album 'Abbey Road.' It was in 1983 that Arista Records, the group's label released 'The Best of the Alan Parsons Project.'

So how does this collection measure up? Read on.

Well, there are several positives. Most of the chart hits from the 1977-1983 era are here. 'Games People Play' (a highlight from the 1980 masterpiece 'The Turn of a Friendly Card'); 'Damned if I Do' (from 1978's 'Eve'); 'Pyramania' (from one of my favorite APP albums, 'Pyramid'); and of course, perhaps their signature song 'Eye in the Sky' (from the 1982 album of the same name).

The new song here is 'You Don't Believe.' It has a catchy synthesizer hook with a solid pop rock-like beat. It's a good song, and it fits somewhat well here. I actually think that they perhaps should have waited to release this on their next album, 1984's 'Ammonia Avenue,' because I think it would have fit just perfectly there. (Take note: The 2008 reissue of 'Ammonia' features a demo version of 'You Don't Believe.')

Now let's look at some negatives.

This collection spans 1977-1983, a good six years, actually. But, this collection makes a major mistake. It completely overlooks their outstanding and classic debut, 'Tales of Mystery and Imagination,' from 1975, inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe. A reason why may be that Mercury Records (which is owned by the Universal Music Group) has the rights to this record, whereas the rest of the Project's discography is owned by Arista (which is owned by Sony BMG).

Another problem is that it is WAY too short. Songs like 'I Robot,' 'The Gold Bug,' 'Sirius' (the classic intro to 'Eye in the Sky' -- how could they omit this one!?!), and 'Hyper-Gamma Spaces' all would fit perfectly here, and yet, they are nowhere to be found.

Overall, the reissue market is booming, and 'The Best of the Alan Parsons Project' is an album that could benefit greatly from a reissue. Sure, all 12 songs here are great, and many of them are five star songs easily, but it is a very lacking compilation at the end of the day, and of course it only spans up to 1983. The Project had many hits after 1983, like 'Days Are Numbers (The Traveller),' 'Stereotomy,' and perhaps one of my personal favorites, 'Standing on Higher Ground.'

I recommend 'The Best of the Alan Parsons Project, Vol. 2' over this one, because it's much more of a career-spanning retrospective than this one. It starts in 1977 (like this disc, that too omits songs from 'Tales') and ends in 1987, when the APP broke up, essentially. Or, if you want a two disc collection, 'The Definitive Collection' or perhaps 'The Essential Alan Parsons Project' will fit your needs perfectly. But the bottom line is there are far better compilations from the APP than this one.

1984 release between Eye in the Sky (1982) and Ammonia Avenue (1984). And 6th track "You Don't Believe Me" was released as a single. The band project consisting of Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson and other guest members filling the rest of the band roles including lead vocalist. This compilation has most of the major hit tracks between their second album I ROBOT and the sixth EYE IN THE SKY which includes the biggest single hit EYE IN THE SKY. Naturally the compilation misses the hits from the debut as well as those from Ammonia Avenue such as DON'T ANSWER ME. To fill their major tracks maybe you will have to get volume 2 originally released in 1988.Since I have known their major hits included here such as DAMN IF I DO, TIME and GAMES PEOPLE PLAY the track I was impressed most was LUCIFER excellent instrumental track showing well that the band started as a progressive rock band just as GENESIS and SUPERTRAMP did. If you want to dig the pop side of this band this compilation is good enough.
