HASH(0x9275d888) étoiles sur 5 Solid job by Wolf! 2 juillet 2008

Got the book a few weeks ago. I was inspired by seeing that kid playing the song "Django" on YouTube. He got the transcription from Wolf's book.

The CD is good enough to enjoy by itself. There is no "Band in a box" backing here. Just real musicians playing really well. Marshall hammers all the solos with total accuracy. The tone is there as well as the flow.

Keep in mind that this is not for beginners. However, if you are a rock, blues player and really want to break away from the box system and sixteenth notes scalar runs, that's a good book to buy. Joe's playing is all over the neck + he uses a wide variety of techniques from finger picking to sweep picking.

Jazz is a lot of work (and fun!) so if you are to spend hours and hours learning, learn from one of the best. Get this book.

If you want to learn great stuff but in a less intimidating way, give a shot to Tom Dempsey "Classic Jazz Guitar Styles" (great backing tracks) or Fred Sokolow "The Roots of Jazz Guitar", these too guys will start you on Charlie Christian all the way up. Their solos are great but they are more fit for low intermediates and up.

Joe Pass was one of the greatest guitarists of the 20th Century. It's a shame he's not with us anymore but, while he was here, he left a large amount of his music so that we could enjoy his artistry. Ever since I first heard him, I've tried to copy his technique. When I found this book, I was excited and couldn't wait to get it. Unfortunately for me, this book concentrates on his single-note solos (with one song on his chord-melody technique over a blues progression). Don't get me wrong. His single note playing was great but I was really hoping to learn some of his chord-melody solos. That was just a preference of mine. But as I listened to the solos, I found myself asking, "How'd he do that?" So, this book turned out to be great, although it was not what I expected. Then again, some of the greatest things in life come by surprise.

Good transcriptions - some of the tab is "awkward" - correct note but bad hand/finger positioning - if you find awkward stretches, try another fret/string or a new position. The standard notation is mostly accurate. The tab is still **very** useful - it's a real time saver - I spend a lot of time with standard notation having to work out the positioning, whereas the tab saves me 95% of that effort.

If you but this book for the transcriptions alone this is great value, easily deserving the 5 star rating - especially as the CD has every note in the book - saves effort, time and money.

The commentary on the transcriptions, whilst accurate, is shallow and does not give much insight into how Joe created these solos - for that you will need to look at Joe's own books - particularly Joe Pass Guitar Style and Joe Pass On Guitar . I refer to Carol Kaye's review, which is a little harsh; her conclusion - this book is "not valid" for analysis - is correct. These transcriptions, however, put the music under your fingers - and that has real value.

I love this book!

Wolf Marshall's transcription books are always first rate, but with this volume, he has truly outdone himself. The selections presented are a great mix of Joe's early work on Pacific and the later Pablo sessions including a great solo version of "Basie's Blues". But for someone like myself learning the language of bebop guitar, the material from "For Django" and "Joy Spring" is a virtual textbook.

Please do not be put off by the terribly inacurate comments made in one of the other reviews here. Wolf does in fact play jazz guitar exceptionally well, not surprising considering that he has studied with George Van Epps, Pat Martino, as well as Joe Pass to name just a few.

The person who wrote the one star review must be joking. This is what it is, note for note transcriptions of the greatest guitar player who ever lived. And despite what the one star reviewer said wolf marshal describes why every note is played and breaks down the psychological standpoint behind each lick. If you can handle this book it will make you a better player. Absolutely the best insight into joe's style I have come come across
