No one matches the lyrical sounds of Paul Desmond's Alto. This compilation is great, to say "Best" is inaccurate - "Highlighting" would be better - Paul Desmond is one of the few that produces consistent high quality. No single CD could encompass all his "Best" I have a number of the CD's that are represented here, but it encourages me to obtain some of the others represented here. Especially "Skylark", I love the haunting gypsy guitar of Gabor Szabo. Ballads, Blues or just plain swingin-Desmond is Beautiful and his distinctive sound is Captivating.

HASH(0x945dc618) étoiles sur 5 A Very Good Taste of Early 1970's Desmond 16 octobre 2012
Par D.R.L. - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
~ The CTI label was best known in the 1970's for bringing jazz to a broader audience by combining established jazz stars with arrangements that merged elements of jazz, pop, and soul. While some of their recordings worked better than others, for the jazz aficionado the better recordings usually resulted when the orchestration took a back seat to the jazz soloing. Paul Desmond only recorded two albums for CTI as a leader, but fortunately the producers allowed him to record what he wanted in the setting he wanted - which means small group rather than full orchestra.
~ Desmond's 'Skylark' album was recorded with two guitarists, one keyboard player, one bass, one cello, and two percussionists. From that album we get four tracks: the hauntingly beautiful "Song of A Seagull", the quirky "Take Ten", the Spanish-tinged "Romance de Amor", a bossa nova treatment of Paul Simon's "Was a Rainy Day", and a beautiful treatment of the standard "Skylark".
~ Desmond's 'Pure Desmond' album finds Desmond perfectly matched with Ron Carter on bass, Connie Kay on drums, and the under-appreciated Toronto guitarist Ed Bickert. We get three excellent tracks from that outstanding album, all standards: "Squeeze Me", "I'm Old Fashion", and "Nuages". 'Pure Desmond' is perhaps Desmond's best album outside the context of the Dave Brubeck Quartet and is therefore worth seeking.
~ With only two Desmond-led albums to draw from, the producers of this compilation had to draw from albums on which Desmond played at least one solo as part of an ensemble. While these tracks do not offer as much Desmond as the tracks from his own albums, they do show what a wonderful contribution Desmond made when playing with sympathetic partners. Thus, we get one track from an album by vocalists Jacky and Roy album, a wonderful standard from Jim Hall's classic 'Concierto' album, one from a Chet Baker's 'She Was Good To Me' album, and two from the 'Giant Box' album by arranger Don Sebesky.
~ All in all, this is a very good 71 minute CD. Most of the tracks are straight-ahead jazz, with only a few heavily orchestrated tracks. On some of the tracks the electric keyboards sound a little dated, but this is a minor complaint. If you are familiar with Desmond's playing with Dave Brubeck you find this CD to be a pleasant addition to your collection. A bargain at the low prices offered by Amazon and some of their suppliers.

Got this for my dad for Christmas and he closed his eyes and smiled. Then went into a history lesson on Paul Desmond and jazz for me but it was great seeing him so happy over a gift.

as an alto player, i really appreciate the sounds of desmond on this cd. he has a very airy, mellow, soft sound which is very relaxing. i especially enjoyed the "song to a seagull," with the quiet melody that flows along. i recommend this cd for anyone who plays sax, whatever style of music, or anyone who likes to listen to soft jazz.

I was a kid when I first heard Dave Brubeck. I didn't know much about Paul Desmond until later. Somehow I finally realized that that sax player is really something. This album is worth acquiring. I can listen to it all afternoon.
