When Susan arrives at the Stanton home Annie, the housekeeper, greets her. Before she's taken to meet Beth, Susan realizes she's been subtly tested by Annie, and thankfully, has passed the exam.
Beth turns out to be a fun loving, well adjusted young woman who has come to terms with her impending death and intends to live out her remaining days to the fullest.
When Victoria Lansing, Beth's much loved cousin and a world famous model, shows up with the intention of staking her claim on Matt, Annie and Susan do everything they can to hide her schemes from Beth. But Victoria wants Matt, and she wants him now!
Beth's love, kindness and generosity come full circle as she is gently cared for by those who love her. She is not a Christian and hasn't wanted to hear anything about Jesus, but because she loves Annie and Susan so much, she agrees to listen to what they say, and is surprised by what she learns.
As Susan observes Matt's devotion to Beth during her illness, she realizes the sisterly love she's felt for him has slowly changed and now is much deeper and more serious. She prays for God to take the love away, but He doesn't. Instead, He gives her the strength to live with it, and helps her hide it deep in her heart where it will remain her secret. But does jealous Victoria know?
After Beth dies, Matt feels he has to get away. He waits until after Annie's wedding, where he gives the bride away, then leaves on a long ocean voyage with a friend who owns a freighter.
When Matt finally returns home he sees Susan and realizes he has missed her. There are feelings he needs to explore, but when he tries, it seems she has found someone!"
