Good read, although would have liked more details and do and dont's. Its quite similar to the bulletproof diet protocol.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good Information but No Citations 22 juillet 2013

I bought this book out of general health interest and less for an immediate baby interest. It is 'quite extreme' for the casual person interested in health improvement. If you are chronically ill or dealing with health problems you are more likely to accept the extremes (and they'll potentially have a bigger impact on your quality of life).

There is a lot of information in this book and if you follow Dave Asprey's blog there are some good additional details here and there that you won't have already heard or seen in his posts. In particular in the areas of toxins and detoxification you'll find more details (or to a degree different information) than that found on his blog or podcast. I finished this book in a couple of days as a result, and took down some good notes on areas to investigate further and potential actions to take to improve my health. If you follow Dave's blog I imagine you'd find it similarly useful.

Some of the new parts to me were:
1. Some additional information on mycotoxins
2. Information on supporting the body's detoxification process
3. Some chemicals and materials in common household products that can be toxic
4. Details on cooking methods to reduce damage to proteins and oxidisation
5. Issues with water

The problem with this book is that it lacks credibility. Dave Asprey has commented several times that he put a lot of effort into crosschecking references for this book (in fact he mentioned that he hired someone to do this). So I was disappointed when there were no citations in the book. There are many bold claims throughout the book and in many cases it references science and research without the actual references or citations. Very disappointing. Areas where he makes bold statements where there is a lot of 'scientific' controversy and uncertainty as yet include BPAs, vaccines and autism.

The best way to use this book is to read it to:
A) Get up to speed on basic nutrition (the information in the book is solid in this area and most of it is supported by good research and documented by others)
B) Read the rest of it for ideas on areas to investigate and look into further for potential action - cross check these parts with other credible authors and researchers.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 FANTASTIC content, missing a piece or 2 though 3 janvier 2013

There is SOO much information out there about what to eat, what affects fertility, fetal development, etc. Most of this information is self-contradictory garbage.

This book is heavily science-based, showing you the research to support the recommended diet, supplements, and environmental changes. Overall, I've made several of the suggested changes to myself (a husband to a pregnant wife) and noted a substantial improvement in how I look and feel - so I am confident that the recommendations are solid.

If you enjoy learning about health and are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant, this book is FANTASTIC.

However, the focus of this book is information, allowing you to make better decisions, but is NOT focused on actual behavioral change. I think the book would be substantially improved with more of a focus on how to actually implement these changes into your life - including a 'biggest bang for your buck' and 'start here' list.

Everything in the book seems to be presented as equally dangerous, making the changes seem overwhelming. The book really leaves it up to you to decide what to do and how to incorporate the changes. I disagree with that approach, thus 4 stars instead of 5.

In my opinion, the 2 easiest changes to make with the biggest results are: cut as much wheat/dairy from your diet as possible, and introduce a lot of grass-fed butter to your diet.

I also wish that the book had included more information for after the baby was born, as there is only a small section dedicated to this, but perhaps that will be the next book!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A healthy mom and baby requires more than a multi-vitamin... 31 décembre 2012
Par Black Moose - Publié sur Amazon.com

...I think almost all mom's and mom's-to-be know that. But looking at the massive amount of info that is available, it's overwhelming knowing that you "should" do more, but not know how to go about it.

This book is an easy read on what you can do to feel great as a mom and set your baby up for a healthy life long before he/she is born. I haven't seen any other education/guidance that's been as easy to read or understand.

If you're thinking of having a baby or are currently pregnant, this is worth a read (either the whole thing or pick and choose the parts that you think apply to you and your pregnancy.) You'll learn things you won't see/hear/read from an average "nutrition" book. Be prepared to discover that many of the traditional assumptions about health of both mom, baby AND dad are at odds with some of the research presented in this book. Then see how you can make a few vital changes that can make a huge difference in how you feel and how your baby develops.

You'll read about how to have a potentially easier pregnancy where YOU feel good, and you can make major decisions that will impact the health of your baby for his/her whole life. The approach to food choices in this book can actually help your body get ready to become pregnant too.

If you are the type of person who doesn't believe everything you read, don't worry, this book is backed up by mountains of scientific and real world research.

Even if you only change a few small things in your food choices or your environment based on what you read, this book explains how it can have a huge impact on your pregnancy and health.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great for anyone, not just expectant moms. 20 décembre 2013

This book is so comprehensive, well-written, backed by research, yet easy for the layperson to understand. If you want to conceive, are already pregnant, or are nursing, it's a must read! AND if you are interested in becoming healthier In general and balancing your hormones, follow the recommendations in The Better Baby Book. I am not trying to conceive (yet) but I couldn't wait for the Bulletproof Executive book to come out, so I got The Better Baby Book as a way to get more detailed information in the meantime. After reading it, I realized I have some things to consider before even trying to get pregnant. The nutrition and exercise advice is phenomenal, and the supplement section is one of the best I've seen. Do your family a favor and get this book. (PS No, I don't work for the authors! I'm just really passionate about the importance of getting this information into as many hands and minds as possible.)

The Better Baby Book: How to Have a Healthier, Smarter, Happier Baby by Lana Asprey, MD and David Asprey (of Bulletproof Executive) is interesting and thought-provoking, take what makes sense to you and leave the rest.

The book revolves around these basic principles:
-Eat the right foods.
-Take the right supplements.
-Detoxify your body before, during, and after pregnancy.
-Minimize stress.

These things are done based on science showing us that our genes aren't destiny, but rather an interplay of the environment and genes.

"Countless factors can cause any of a baby's genes to turn on or off during the time in the womb. Even a mother's thoughts and feelings during pregnancy can play a significant role in determining what personality traits, characteristics, and behaviors her child may inherit. The three most common things that affect gene expression are the mother's diet and nutrition, her environment, and her emotions. Having a healthy father also has a big effect on a baby's genes, much more than many people realize."

While I didn't necessarily agree with everything in The Better Baby Book, it did give me a lot of food for thought (and for the record, no, I am not currently pregnant nor planning on getting pregnant in the near future).

In addition, I would've liked to have seen references in the book itself, but they can be found online on their website.
