4.0 étoiles sur 5 Solid value headphone, but are they durable? 22 septembre 2011

This review from an aspiring audiophile on a budget. I've had ear canal headphones from Shure, JVC, and Ultimate ears, but in general I feel i can't listen to ear canals for long periods of time. So i recently reverted to my old Sennheiser PX-100's, but they broke. I did some research and bought these guys a couple of days ago and they came promply (thanks Amazon prime student) in a simple, low waste, easy-to-open package.

On to the headphones themselves:

Pros:
-Extremely comfortable. These say they are supra-aural, but really they surround my ears with comfortable velour pads. Strap on top keeps it in place nicely, with the plastic part not even contacting my head. Not too much pressure on my eardrums.
-Sound quality is comparable to my PX-100s, but a bit boomier in the lower end. Can definitely tell the difference between low bitrate and 320 kbps (CD quality) files. Noticed slight sibilance (hissing) on some lower bitrate tracks, maybe an amp would fix this? Good midrange detail, a little light on the treble. I plan on fuxin around with the EQ settings to see if that'll help
-Clean, classic look in white, dunno about black

Cons:
-Look to be somewhat delicate. Shoulda come with a case of some kind, makes me miss how my px-100s folded up and fit into a compact plastic case ;(
-Cable is SOOO long. Seriously, way too long. I estimate it's somewhere near 9 ft (!?!). I need to find some way to shorten it other than wrapping it around my iphone, cause everytime i wanna use the screen theres like 4 feet of cable wrapped around it.
-Have to turn the volume up pretty high on most devices to get desired sound level. Detail seems to diminish a bit at lower volumes.
-These guys leak quite a bit of sound, enough to annoy others on an airplane or a bus methinks, though I haven't experimented with that yet
-Couldn't they have used a gold-plated connector? Im almost considering chopping this cable by a few feet and soldering my own radio shack one in there...

If that were a factory-installed option on this headphone, along with a case, I'd pay another 15 bucks for these bad boys, because in all seriousness they are a solid value in sound quality and comfort for the money. I will update if durability proves an issue, and if beyerdynamic will honor their 2 year warranty if (when) something happens. For now, I'm glad I purchased this headphone. Koss porta-pros are just way too weird lookin for my taste. Maybe the Sennheiser PX 100-II On Ear Miniheadphone (Black) was the smarter choice for portability, but I needed a change of pace and am content with my purchase.

Happy shopping

5.0 étoiles sur 5 These go everywhere I go. Priced perfect. 6 juin 2013

Realistic, transparent, soundstage is there, plenty versatile. Pads are super comfortable, but being a plastic one-piece phone, they're a tad tight on the cranium piece. More on that down below.

I was planning to spend under $120 - 150 for both an open-ear for playback and closed-ear for home studio tracking.

I got OCD, as I do with any purchase over $10, and did a ton of research years ago (I've had these for at least 2 years). Headroom.com was this audiophile guy that had a vast sea of printable pdfs of tests he had done on 100s of phones. The site looks totally different from 2 years ago, but it functions the same; you can compare all aural aspects and learn all you want on that site.

SOUND: I outright love the frequency curve of these phones. The bass sounds tame & honest while still being very present. Excellent compared to some sennheiser 280s my friend has, which isolate better than any phone out there, but too boomy and gaudy to be taken seriously. Anyway, the lows balance fantastic with the mids and highs. My impression is a ton of work went into this particular headphone. Looking at its big brother, the dt770 and such, the freq responses are heavy on the bass..

COMFORT: I knew I'd like these when I first held them in my hands. The velvet cups made me want to snuggle and fall asleep. They are a bit shallow to where they touch your ear, which I thought would bother me, but nope. I wear these for hours and hours. I fall asleep with them on, granted I slide one cup behind or ahead of one ear for max comfort laying down. I run with them, mow the grass, drive, eat, crap, unspeakables. You name it. I even put them on out of habit and forget I have them on until I go to listen to something an hour later and realize the cord's not plugged in. And I have the biggest head out of anyone I know, aside from my 2m tall, 120kg dad (I'm 1.8m 75kilos, head like a basketball). The cord is like 30ft long, so I bundle it up in my pocket to get the length to suit my needs.

I didn't think I'd find something I'd love for 50 bucks, but it happened. I'm just now starting to look for another pair of phones. I want the same sound, but with deeper cups & more adjustable headband.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Brilliant sound, lasts forever - highly recommended! (Not 'tangle free,' though) 6 février 2016

Having bought a beyerdynamic open set and loved them, when it came time to replace my closed set I decided to go with beyerdynamic again. This was in 2012. I'm a DJ and audiophile and I'm telling you, the sound on these $40 headphones cannot be beat. Flexible range, gives just enough bass, handles live music and distortion wonderfully. They're comfortable and while they say "supraaural" (on-ear), they actually fit over my ears. The one downside came in summer 2015, when the cable started bunching up for no reason. The cable was very long, but now with the tangles I can't even sit up straight while they're plugged into my computer. (See the photo I added.) So uncomfortable! It's gotten so bad that I'm looking to replace them even though they otherwise work and sound exactly as they did when I bought them. I wish beyerdynamic made something exactly like these but with a flat cable. I don't want to leave the brand, but I definitely don't want to put up with this mess again!
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Remarkably clean and detailed sound for this price range 3 mars 2016

Part of me wants to give these headphones 5 stars. The sound is remarkable for the price. In fact, when I first put them on I was in awe of the quality at this price point. The sound is *very* clean. The 4 star rating is for the sound compared to other headphones I own. That may not be an entirely fair comparison as I own some very good headphones. This was what could be called an entirely unnecessary purchase, except... I work with hot glass. I lke to listen to music while I work and do not want to bring expensice equipment into my glass studio. In addition to the hazards of flying molten glass, my studio is effectively outdoors, on a roofed lanai, and so I am dealing with 80% ambient humidity and salty air in addition to occupational hazards, not good for electronics. Up to this point I have been wearing Sennheiser HD 202 II Professional Headphones (Black) in my studio. When I got them I was very impressed with the sound at that price point. I may have to go back and revise the review I wrote of those (years ago). Yes, it is very good sound for under $25, but these are considerably better and in the roughly same price range. The sound quality, however, is a good deal different, and why I rated them 4 stars. The Sennheisers are warmer. The Beyerdynamics are amazing in their reproduction of sound and how clean (noise-free) it is, as well as the detail it picks up. It is, however, pretty harsh, even clinical. After wearing them for a few hours the treble can be a bit overwhelming.

I probably ought to rate them 5 stars for a set of headphones in this price range. They are punchy and crisp, very clean detailed sound, much more so than I have ever heard from a headphone in this price range. Bass heads are going to hate these. They do not have boosted bass like so many headphones do now. I personally much prefer a rounded profile and am glad these do not have boosted bass, but thought that I ought to note that as many people are looking for that.

They are well constructed, light weight and comfortable. While they are not noise cancelling or noise blocking phones, they do a reasonably good job of keeping background noise in the background. They do not build up heat (like my Sennheiser HD 558 Headphones which makes them a good choice for outdoor use, mobile devices. I will add that I did not need to use an amp to enjoy them with mobile devices as I did with a set of Sennheiser HD 461G Headset with Inline Mic and 3 Button Control (one of the very few sets of Senns with which I have been disappointed).

At some point I became aware of the constricted range (again compared to very good headphones). For headphones in this price range they are excellent.Eventually I will have to get myself a better set of Beyerdynamics. With upwards of a dozen sets of headphones in the house, I bought these really just to see what they could do. I was pleasantly surprised, and they will probably be replacing my lower-end Sennheisers in my studio. They don't compare to the sound on my Denon AH-MM200BK Music Maniac On-Ear Headphones , Grados or higher end Sennheisers, but at 1/10th the cost that would not be a fair comparison.

I would rate them 5 stars as a low cost set of mobile headphones in this price range.
They are not quite as portable as my AKG Q460 Mini On Ear Headphones, Quincy Jones Signature Line which fold very small, have detachable cables, and also really great sound for mobile phones, again at somewhat greater cost, which I would give a solid 5 stars for mobile headphones.

As you may be able to tell, I am still wavering on this star rating. These are not audiophile phones, but at this price that is not at all reasonable to expect. They are absolutely great for the price but with a distinct enough sound profile that some will definitely like them more then others. If you are looking for a lot of bass, look elsewhere. If you appreciate clean detailed sound, these are remarkable for what they offer at this price point.

I would recommend them for people looking for a good, inexpensive set of headphones they do not have to worry much about.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Incredible sound for the price 25 août 2012

Incredible sound for the price paid. I can only imagine how much more detail their their high-end headphones must sound. Rich, well-rounded sound for classical, trance, dance, electronic, rock, and pop genres. I can hear details and notes piped directly into my head that are missed with other headphones or even without them, but I'm no audiophile. All plastic and sturdy construction. The velvety muffler ear cups contain sound well, no sound leaks, fits well but they can get warm. Only issue is that the overhead is a bit high for this girl-sized head - the adjustable head strap is at its shortest length on me. Still very comfortable. They don't weigh on your head as some do, and are light-weight to the point of forgetting I have them on. Very pleased with this purchase. Recommend highly at its price point.
