4.0 étoiles sur 5 Birds of New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago 23 juin 2009

Most of the photographs in this book are excellent. And, of the 390 species of endemic species found in New Guinea and the Bismark Archipelago, about 280 species are covered (with color photographs) in this guide. So if you do not own the field guide to the birds of New Guinea, you won't have information on c.100 endemic species. Overall, the book covers 444 species, or roughly 55% of the species found in the coverage area. The reason why I gave only 4 stars is that, you don't have information on about 100 endemic species. If the book at least had photos of all the endemics, I would give it 5 stars. Because, when you have information and photos of all the endemics, you can always find information on the rest of the species by consulting other works in the region such as Birds of Australia, Birds of Wallacea, and Birds of the Solomons, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia, all of which are more readily available than the classic field guide to the birds of New Guinea (by Beehler et al.), which is long out of print (hope the publishers will release a new edition of this excellent guide soon). Let's hope that the authors would, in the future, add photos of all the endemics so this guide would be more useful without consulting the field guide to the birds of New Guinea. The authors frankly say that the present volume is intended as a supplemental guide to be used in conjuction with the field guide.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good but not great; limited species & poses; ok text; 3.5 stars 8 septembre 2008

Basics: 2001, softcover, 272 pages, 650+ color photos of 444 species, no range maps

This photo guide offers a nice overview of some of the birds found in New Guinea and in the chain of islands off its ne coast. The format of the book is similar to a different series of small books titled "Photographic Guide to Birds of XYZ". The three primary differences displayed in this book are the greater number of species, more photos per species, and slightly more and better text.

Of the 800 or so birds found in this region, 444 (55%) are photographed and discussed here. About half of the birds are shown with two photos. The quality of these photos is quite variable. There are many very good photos. I would estimate 80-85% of the photos as good. The remaining photos need improvement. These are often too small, distant, dark, or too obscured by vegetation for a good visual examination. Quite a few of the photos are of birds held in the hand after mist-netting, which deprives us of the true form of the bird in nature. The photo selection of the Cicadabird is interesting. It shows only an immature female.

The text for each bird is a medium-length paragraph that gives 1-2 sentences on description, habitat, habits, voice, and range. The descriptions are typically brief, but do give good bits of key ID points. Nice details are offered for some of the more difficult birds like the scrub-wrens. In contrast, many other birds have descriptions that are a bit sparse.

Although this is an incomplete photo guide (only half the birds covered), it will still be useful to prepare for your birding trip. It is also the best available book for photographs of this region's birds. I'd give it 3.5 stars if possible, but not 4 because of its limitations. Using it with the complete illustrated field guide by Beehler will serve you well.

I've listed several related books below...
1) Birds in Papua New Guinea by Coates
2) The Birds of Papua New Guinea: Including the Bismarck Archipelago and Bougainville by Coates
3) Birds of New Guinea by Beehler/Pratt/Zimmerman/
4) Birds of New Guinea by Iredale
5) Upland Birds of Northeastern New Guinea by Beehler
6) Handbook of New Guinea birds by Rand/Gilliard
7) Birds of paradise and bower birds (The World naturalist) by Gilliard
8) The Birds of Paradise: Paradisaeidae by Frith/Beehler

Par Laszlo Wagner - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
This book contains brilliant photos of what are arguably the most spectacular birds on Earth - birds of paradise - and a lot more.
444 species are covered in detail with 650 photos, with the accompanying text describing males, females and immatures, voice, habits, range, habitat and status.
Also included is a complete checklist of the 796 bird species described from the region so far.
A must have for anyone interested in the birds of New Guinea and its satellite islands.
