A bon entendeur...

December 26, 2013, I purchased a BlackVue, 2 Channel DR550GW-2CH 16GB for $$$, not cheap. <go to BlackVue’s web site>. Two cameras comprise this system. The rear camera is connected to the front camera with a long coaxial cable. This coaxial supplies the video to the SD card in the front camera and brings power to the rear camera. The front and rear cameras are attached to the windows using sticky pads. The front camera mounts on the window and you plug the system into your cigarette jack for power. I had no problems routing the cables for power and to connect to the rear camera through my cars body panels. Piece of cake. The video resolution is great and with the GPS and the desktop software for the Macintosh you can view your route on a map, select any moment of time to view. This system is just so cool. You can sit in the Cafe, etc., and, using your portable devise (WiFi), view “Live” what is going on around your car. You can record all the audio.
The desktop software that Pita supplies has great features. You can program the firmware on your camera, set your password, description, fine tune everything you need. You can view your video recording of a trip by viewing a road map, including GPS coordinates, speed, time. You can see the bumps in the road by looking at the sensor information. You can switch between front and rear views, jump around to when and where you would like. This is all great stuff
Cons: You get LOTS OF GLARE from your front window. There is no Polaroid lens cover available for the front lens from Pita. You have to make your own. It would have been great if Pita had changed its lens protector into a Polaroid glare reduction gadget. This unit has WiFi, but it will only connect to your portable devise and only for viewing live and stored camera pictures. My router cannot find this camera’s WiFi. You cannot download any recordings into your computer or portable devise. If you want to download recordings to you laptop, desktop or install them on your portable devise then you have to remove the SD card and put the card into your computer system. To get the SD card you have to disconnect the power cable, then remove it from the Camera. Disconnect the cables, remove it from the car, then remove the SD card from the camera. Well, I don’t think that Pita realized that the SD connector that they used in the front camera needed to much more rugged to survive the constant removal and installation of the SD card. When you install and remove the SD card often, guess what? The connector breaks and you get errors or maybe things just stop working. You know that is happening for sure when your camera talks to you and tells you to check the SD card. Or you view live or stored recordings and see that the year is now 2055, Wow, back to the future in my car, just call me Marty McFly. Pita could have built into its camera the circuity to shut down the camera when the car’s battery went below a certain voltage but they didn’t. So if you enable your system to always record then you better have AAA on speed dial. I just plug my system into the cigarette jack that powers off when I turn off the car. Now lets talk about the software. I mean the app for you mobile devise and the desktop software. I am using an iPhone, iPad, and Apple MacMini (OS X 10.10.4.. but There is no built in battery. Great stuff. But you cannot connect to the camera in your car and download your recordings. You have to bring the SD card to the computer. Apps are another matter. You cannot use the zoom feature on Apple OS. After many attempts Pita is now delivering an App that works. Also Pita has been slow to provide product support to deliver firmware and software updates. I hope that they continue to do this.
Summary: Pita’s BlackVue is impressive, very cool, I love it, but expensive, unreliable, and lacking the full spectrum of feature’s that would make it a great produce and great value for the price. A 17 month life span (thats-minus shipping and installation time) means: is this worth your $Dollars?
Is there is something better out there right now or do we need to wait until the big Automobile Companies produce a product that really delivers the goods. Until then; “Buyer Beware”.
still works great but I purchased a new car and I wanted to upgrade to the best camera for the front and back. This is Ideal and it
is easy to install with the power box that allows you to keep it recording while parked. It's just an extra little security but it's also fun
to view on the Ipad or Iphone which I have found interesting conversation piece. It's just a Great Product and I would suggest it to anyone that has a nice automobile or any vehicle. I hope I never have to have it for any reason but that secure feeling you have it.
