If I hadn't read the previous three books in this series I probably would've deleted this one after page thirty and not finished it. This book is not really about telling a story as much as it is about shooting without remorse or thought just about everything that moves. It reads like an old fashioned Dick Tracy comic strip. Some of the dialogue was just plain corny and many of the scenes were purely unrealistic. If even one tenth of the shootouts in this book actually happened in a small town it would make national news. Here they not only have machine gun shootouts but have them with supposedly both east and west coast factions of the "mob". The formula for this author's writing is showing so I'll give her one more try with book five and if that reads the same then I'll move on to another author. Books one and two were enjoyable, book three started to become tedious with it's repetitiveness and the overabundance of typos and grammatical errors that run throughout all these books, but this one is a throwaway. The sense of humor and sharp wit she adds to the dialogue is an incentive to keep reading but not so much the development of the characters. Their lives have become stagnant. So far, the best character in this series is the dog.

This one starts with Kendra Douglas witnessing a murder. Kendra is whisked into witness protection.

Twelve years later Archie Monday is getting ready to take Gnarly to his grooming appointment. Before she goes she checks in with Mac.

Mac is in the bathroom trying to unclog the toilet. One would think a wealthy blue blood like Mac would hire someone to unstop the toilet. Not Mac. If he can do it himself, he will.

Mac gets a call from his brother David, the Chief of Police in Spencer.

David notifies Mac that someone has stolen one of his cruisers. Both Mac and Archie find this hard to believe. Who the hell would steal a police cruiser??

Archie leaves and is on her way to take Gnarly to the groomer. Archie is followed by a Spencer Police cruiser.

Archie finds this strange as everyone know who she is and what her SUV looks like. She's not speeding and she also notices that there are two people in the cruiser.

Spencer is a small PD and the officers all have their own cruisers. No one doubles up. Archie is on alert as the cruiser's lights come on and she's pulled over.

So begins one damned fine read.

This one has Archie, Mac, Gnarly, witness protection, a mob leader named Cruze, murder, attempted murder, Federal Agents. Archie's old history, a Fed named Randi Finnegan, a David who hates Finnigan, a Finnigan who hates David, a leak in the Wit Sec program, an Archie who decides she's not leaving Spencer and Mac, a Mac, David and the Department who will protect her and Mac, Archie, David, Randi and Gnarly in one hell of a read.

Another five star read.

Blast from the Past

Written by Lauren Carr

Reviewed by R. Murry

Within a few chapters of this snappy moving mystery, there are more dead bodies than the town of Spencer, Maryland, has body bags to fill.

The plots are many but the solutions are simple if you are one Mac Faraday. His epiphanies, woven into this multilevel crime wave of a small resort town, will keep you awake for this good read. Even his dog Gnarly gets into the act by being his dominating lovable self.

Ms. Carr's main character is in the middle of a Blast from the Past of others: the woman he is love with, the owner of a local restaurant, and two couples he never met before.

What crimes have they committed in the past? None, but all the action comes from their past, because they came in contact with the wrong people at one time - the ones with the broken noses - the mob.

Mac's and his half-brother's investigative abilities out shines that of the U.S. Marshals and the FBI. Mac's half-brother is the local chief of police and Mac is helping him solve what seems to be a mess of a situation - dead bodies with few clues to follow.

Lauren's presentation of these situations keeps the reader's attention. The clues are there. I had to read some areas twice, but they are there. And it was fun trying to keep ahead of Mac, Gnarly, and all the other crime fighters trying to solve these mysteries.

I can see why @TheMysteryLadie has a good following. I'm putting her next book on my BTR list. You should too after reading this one.

It might be a little unrealistic for the interconnection between Archie's and Leah's cases, but that did help move the story along at lightning speed. I'm just sorry that we'll not have Sari around. The relationship between her and Gnarly was heartfelt as well as amusing. Gnarly is a superdog, both policeman and babysitter with equal success.
