Présentation de l'éditeur

Blender is a powerful and free 3D graphics tool used by artists and designers worldwide. But even experienced designers can find it challenging to turn an idea into a polished piece.

For those who have struggled to create professional quality projects in Blender, author Ben Simonds offers this peek inside his studio. You'll learn how to create 3D models as you explore the creative process that he uses to model three example projects: a muscular bat creature, a futuristic robotic spider, and ancient temple ruins. Along the way, you'll master the Blender interface and learn how to create and refine your own models.

You'll also learn how to:

  • Work with reference and concept art in Blender and GIMP to make starting projects easier
  • Block in models with simple geometry and build up more complex forms
  • Use Blender's powerful sculpting brushes to create detailed organic models
  • Paint textures with Blender and GIMP and map them onto your 3D artwork
  • Design textures in GIMP and map them onto your 3D artwork
  • Light, render, and composite your models to create striking images
Each chapter walks you through a piece of the modeling process and offers detailed explanations of the tools and concepts used. Filled with full-color artwork and real-world tips, Blender Master Class gives you the foundation you need to create your own stunning masterpieces.

Supplementary download includes files for each project in the book, as wellas extra textures, brushes, and other resources.

Covers Blender 2.6x

HASH(0x97cecc60) étoiles sur 5 The place to start with Blender... Simply Awesome!!! 23 mars 2013
Par T Anderson - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Blender is a beast. At least to a guy like me that is usual in code and not in user interface tools. Sure I use Xcode, Eclipse, and Visual Studio but they just give me a place to code. I have used Photoshop, GIMP, and Expression Studio which make you depend on the tools available but Blender is in a class of its own.

I have downloaded it in the past around the time Big Buck Bunny was first released. I spent a few weeks playing with it, but got nowhere. This book convinced me to take another crack at it and I am really glad I did.

The book starts off with an introduction to Blender and a short introduction to GIMP. GIMP is another powerful open source tool the author uses for 2D image editing throughout the book. For a great book on GIMP check out The Book of GIMP: A Complete Guide to Nearly Everything.

I have listed all the chapters below to give you an idea of all the high level topics covered. Each chapter is packed with tons of information.

1. Introduction to Blender
2. Introduction to GIMP
3. Preparation
4. Blocking In
5. Modeling the Details
6. Sculpting
7. Retopology
8. UV Unwrapping
9. Hair and Particle Systems
10. Texture Baking
11. Texture Painting
12. Materials
13. Lighting
14. Rendering and Compositing
15. Going Further

I had Blender open almost the entire time I read the book. It took a little longer to get through because I kept getting sidetracked trying different things, and wanted to be in front of a computer with Blender on it, but I think it was worth it.

Blender really is an amazing tool and I know the author said they have made great improvements to the user interface to make it more intuitive, but I would still be lost in it without a book like this.

Without this book I would have never figured out how to do sculpting correctly or work with particle systems and paint textures. This book goes into some really advanced modelling techniques, which makes this book great for both the beginner and the advanced user.

The book sticks to creating, texturing, and rendering models as still images. It does not cover the rigging and animation tools, simulation tools, or the game engine. That takes nothing away from the book and actually makes it better. Focusing on creating, texturing, and rendering models as still images the author is able to go in depth on a massive amount of topics.

The book comes with some awesome examples. Without them I probably would have not have learned as much as I did. It was pretty cool to see how powerful Blend is and how awesome the results of using it correctly can be. The author does some really cool stuff.

The author's writing style also made the very complex tools easier to understand. The book is written like he is there in the room with you helping you learn and showing you how to work through the steps of creating still images.

This book has literally opened up a whole new world of creative possibilities. I now have Blender open every chance I get.

I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about Blender, or anyone working with Blender at any level.

HASH(0x97e98738) étoiles sur 5 Really good Blender Book 2 mars 2013
Par Joe D. Thomas - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I have the iPad version as well as the book. The book has not arrived yet. The Ipad version is wonderful. Finally, publishers are taking some advantage of the possibilities of digital books. The pictures are not part of the text, but instead are embedded and independent. So, when an illustration is required, I can enlarge it to the full screen size of the iPad. This makes seeing the illustrations really clear and very nice. This book may be a little advanced for me. I scanned the entire thing and I am intimidated by its depth. As a beginner (2 years), the instructions may not be cookie cutter enough. But, the author intended that and makes it clear from the start. I think this book will be very helpful, and with an excellent index with hypertext, it will be a useful reference as well.

HASH(0x97e7d21c) étoiles sur 5 Best Current Book for Game Modelers 8 mai 2013

When I was learning Blender...it seems like eons ago but it was last year...the only book I could get my hands on for the new interface was Roland Hess' Blender Foundations. While Hess' book is a great book if you're new to 3D or Blender and want to use Blender by itself to model, animate, and render, it really isn't for game modeling. Game modeling is a specialized field of its own, and there really is no book devoted to the topic for Blender (I myself have thought about putting one out) and the tutorials available online are spotty at best. This book covers most of the topics you need to understand many of the workflows that can be applied to game design. While it won't teach you the bare basics of using Blender (there are numerous tutorials on things) it fills in many of the gaps that are noticeably absent in the educational content available. Highly recommended.

Sometimes he talks about figures that are on the next page, and just casually drops large changes in the project without fully explaining them, at least in my opinion. Strange that it is so highly rated and I just can't get into it. It really isn't a step by step as I was hoping for, rather it is more like he just wrote down what he was thinking as he did something. Probably great for some people but it's just not written in a style that I like and I found it confusing to get through. Put a lot of information at the beginning that was bound to be forgotten by the time it was used again.
