Description du produit

From Publishers Weekly

When the average American male sees the telltale blue line on a pregnancy indicator, the first thing that crosses his mind isn't likely the number of "nappies" in his future or missed nights out with his "mates" at the pub. Yet these are the worries that occupy the refreshingly honest, and utterly British, author of this informative guide to one of life's greatest adventures. The sheer otherness of this pregnancy handbook might be just the key to easing "blokes" into reading about what to expect during their partner's pregnancy. True, there's the world of difference between British socialist medicine and our American system, but the basics of how a baby develops through the three trimesters remains the same, as do the down and dirty details of labor. Smith tackles these topics with self-deprecating humor but also with a surprising amount of detailed knowledge. His book is a natural gift for expectant fathers, and even mothers-to-be may be entertained as Smith moves chronologically from conception to the earliest postpartum days, covering topics like breast-feeding and what to do if things don't go as planned. He breaks the information down into digestible segments that never exceed two pages and that have witty headings like "Big Belly, Big Toes" or "The Crowning Glory." Men who pick up this book expecting to give it a halfhearted skim may very well find themselves hooked by Smith's anecdotes and the casual, addictive way he dispenses knowledge.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book takes a 'warts and all' sensible yet humorous look at the many stages of pregnancy. It explores the changes, physical and emotional, that any man can expect to see in his partner and in their relationship over the coming months. Becoming pregnant involved two people. The rearing of a child will involve two people; there is every reason that your partner's pregnancy should also involve the two of you, together. For any man that has been put off reading pregnancy books because he doesn't feel he was the intended audience or that something about the tone of these books was alien to him , yet he still has questions that need answers; then The Blokes' Guide to: Pregnancy is the book he's been looking for. As a father himself, Jon Smith realised, when his partner Lisa became pregnant that there was nothing out there that he could relate to. The Bloke's Guide to Pregnancy is the result. Jon takes a comical yet informed look at the ups and downs of life as a father to be.

A wonderful guide to pregnancy for men. Most pregnancy books are understandably focussed towards mothers. This one isn't! It helps you to understand the changes that your partner is undergoing so you can be properly supportive. And's it is funny too. Buy it, as soon as you learn that your partner is pregnant, and this book could save your life!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 My husband seems to like it since he read it twice! 8 février 2008

I bought this book for my husband because A) we're pregnant, and B) he spent his high school years in England so he enjoys English humor. He was skeptical about the quality of information and humor when I showed him the write-up before buying, but he let me get it for him anyway. I'd say he enjoyed it, because he's already read it twice, and I snuck a few peeks over his shoulder and it seemed like a guys' kinda book. The part I read happened to be the author telling the readers not to cheat while your wife is pregnant! I thought not cheating while you have a wife is a given, but my husband explained that cheating is a bit more common in the UK?? Anyway, I appreciated that the author was very against this behavior, and it made me feel good that he was making good recommendations to my hubby. Oh and besides that my hubby seemed to learn a lot through this book, the Mayo Clinic book, and the Mom's on call guide to basic baby care book, because he knows more than I do now about pregnancy and babies!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Better than the women's books! 28 octobre 2007

Most pregnancy books are tailored to the expecting mother; in fact, pregnancy (in general) focuses around "the mama." The Bloke's guide investigates how pregnancy will be for both men and women. At times it seems to be written from the "man's man" perspective, but Jon Smith always deconstructs that role with classic british humor. My wife noted that this book talks about the significant social changes that happen, which apparently do not appear in the books targeted towards women. Enjoy!

an ok read for my partner who seemed aloof at first. He's now totally excited. This book is helpful and a light read, but it can be almost patronizing sometimes.

I bought this book for my husband, and really likes it. He said it is a funny book on pregnancy, though most of the information in it is mediocre, as he already knew most of it from common knowledge or stuff I had already told him. Though I would recommend it for guys who have little knowledge of pregnancy.

I bought this book for my husband, thinking that he might find it amusing as well as informative. He did read it, cover-to-cover, but was not especially pleased. He knew that it was a rather British-skewed book, but that didn't bother him (we lived in the UK for several years). He found the information in the book too elementary. Having been around siblings who have children and watching the whole process from the sidelines, he already has a pretty basic knowledge of pregnancy and how it works. The book he was really looking for was one that would go beyond the basics of, "She's going to get cranky - don't worry it's only hormones". He did say, however, that if you have a man who knows absolutely nothing about pregnancy or how it works, that this is a good book.
