A Blue Notes Novel

Blame it on jet lag. Jason Greene thought he had everything: a dream job as a partner in a large Philadelphia law firm, a beautiful fiancée, and more money than he could ever hope to spend. Then he finds his future wife in bed with another man, and he’s forced to rethink his life and his choices. On a moment’s notice, he runs away to Paris, hoping to make peace with his life.

But Jason’s leave of absence becomes a true journey of the heart when he meets Jules, a struggling jazz violinist with his own cross to bear. In the City of Love, it doesn’t take them long to fall into bed, but as they’re both about to learn, they can’t run from the past. Sooner or later, they’ll have to face the music.

Picked up during a Dreamspinner Press sale, and I'll probably try a few more in the series in the next one. It was pleasant to read, although quite predictable - too predictable at times. The French is mostly believable aside for one or two mistakes. The story uses a lot of clichés, too, but the few original parts are still nice.

Not the book of the century, but I can see the appeal of the series, and I hear some of the next volumes are better so I might give it a go !

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Really enjoyed it 6 août 2015

Oh, that was lovely. Really. While it took me about a fifth of the way through the book to really get into it I really ended up enjoying it, even when things kind of went to hell for a while. Watching Jules and Jason heal each other was amazing, just like watching as Jason rediscovered a part of himself he'd left behind. The secondary characters were well done too, especially Jason's sister, Rosie. I'm totally unopposed to checking out the other books in this series and I know I'll read this one again, too.

What a wonderful story. The characters Jason and Jules were great, of the main characters I loved Jules. A well written story with all the music to back it up.

Hotshot 34-year-old Jason, an attorney in Philadelphia, after catching his fiancée with another man, chucks it all for a few weeks to go to Paris and stay in the fabulous apartment that his sister owns but doesn't use because she lives in Italy. He meets 22-year-old Jules, a player in a jazz club, and is mysteriously drawn to him. Jules is also a fabulous cook, by the way, and Jason apparently found time to build up a mega-hot body during those 80-hour weeks at the law firm. Jules is almost instantly smitten, they end up spending all their time together, and eventually Jason admits that he loves Jules. Every single person in their lives accepts their relationship as completely normal.

This was an okay novel to read once, but I won't feel the need to go back and re-read it. As you can gather from my summary, one problem I had was that it was all just too, too perfect.Yes, there were some bumps in the road to romance that I skipped in my summary, but the author didn't make me think for a second that the two would ever really separate. The ending, I think, was meant to be a surprise, but it was completely predictable.

The novel started well, and ended well (though with no surprises), but I felt like the middle went on too long. I kept leaving it to go to other books, then coming back because I hate to leave a novel unfinished. It did pick up the pace again when the two of them went to see Jason's old haunts in Grenoble.

That said, it was a pleasant enough story. The sex scenes were handled well, better than I have found in the other MM romance novels by women that I've read. The copyediting, for a blessing, was done well -- there were no more errors than you'd see in any printed book, definitely not enough to take me out of the story. I love Paris (though I've never been), and my French is quite good; the author didn't strike any false notes in language or culture as far as I could see. There were a couple of flashbacks, and I thought they were handled well in context.

Would I read something else by this author? I'd probably sample, especially if it was a Kindle Free Book of the Day, but I wouldn't go out looking.

I loved re-reading this book. I enjoyed it the first time and went back and found my first review so I could compare reading experiences. Here's my first review:

"I received this as a free galley from Netgalley.com. Although I had my doubts about a very young, very poor Frenchman and a rather older, established so-called straight American finding true love together, it was a nice midlife crisis wish-fulfillment story. It's a little confusing at first whether the American is married or not--the author made this a little ambiguous. The age and culture difference was also a little hard to swallow, but the author did a good job of bridging the gap by developing the characters well and giving them enough obstacles to work around toward a decent relationship. And meanwhile, there's Paris and jazz and a very gifted young musician and a man who takes a chance on a lot of unknowns, and of course, trouble along the way. So, it worked, and that's down to the author's skill in creating characters and story-telling and her descriptions of Paris and jazz. It's a romance, right? And a slightly different take on the Cinderella story, but overall I liked it and will definitely look for the author's next book."

Re-reading this book after so long, and then having read the rest in the series, which has gotten close to wrapping up, just made this book more delicious to me. Ambiguity all cleared up, and some of the other characters that I got to know and love were present. After reading Blue Notes a second time, I had none of the quibbles that I experienced the first time, but since then I've read many more M/M romances and Blue Notes and the series remain among my favorites and some of the most well-written in the genre. In fact, I'm re-reading the rest of the series so I can re-visit all these wonderful men. Thanks, Shira, for the gift of adding more richness to this already great book.
