A true "album" of original blues. Eclectic, imaginative and from the heart.
What a voice.

Mighty Mo Rodgers debut CD BLUES IS MY WALLIN' WALL on
North Star Records is a unique musical vision of life experience written
by a remarkable individual. Mo attended Indiana State University & finished
his degree in Philosphy at Cal State Northridge fulfilling a promise made
to his mother to earn a college degree. He eventually pursued a Masters degree
in Humanities and his thesis was "Blues As A Metaphysical Music" Obviously this CD
is not Blues for Dummies.
Mo's musical odyssey started with his friend Willie B, who would sneak
Mo over to Gary, Ind to see blues legends such as Eddie Boyd, Earl Hooker,
Jimmy Reed, and Willie Dixon. Nice start on a Masters in Blues huh ? Mo
formed a band, the Rocketeers in high scholl. In college he fronted the Maurice
Rodgers Combo on piano. He then moved to California and did gigs with Bobby Bland,
Roy Brown, Albert Collins, TBone, Edwin Starr & the Temptations. He began producing
records in the 70's and produced Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee's 1973 record "Sonny &
Brownie" Not a bad blues pedigree.
The Mighty Mo Rodgers band consists of Mo on keys & vocals, Albie Burks
his neighbor, on bass, Chris Walsh guitar, and Burleigh Drummond on drums.
This CD is an unusual mixture of soul, blues, pop, R&B and is a musical journey
to savor indeed. This CD tells a story that needs to be told. This CD is about the
blues with roots that run deep. It is a musical adventure to be savored, like Dewar's
with ice, slow & with thought. Here it is folks, BLUES IS MY WALLIN' WALL.
BLUES IS MY WALLIN' WALL The wall of shame, where the evils of slavery
came to die. The roots of the blues. This song has a certain dignity that runs
through it. A stunning tune that has a great deal of thought to it.
TOOK AWAY MY DRUM Another tune that gets to the bottom of the bowl.
Blues was the only thing the slave masters could not take from his slaves.
HEAVEN GOT THE BLUES Lightening, Thunder, the evil that men do comes
back to them. The sorrow of a just Creator for his creation. The evil that
man do rain down on me & you.
NO REGRETS Nice little repoire between Mo & his lady at the beginning.
The blues man with no money doing what he loves & the choices we make in life.
TUSKEGEE BLUES The Tuskkegee experience brought to song. Blacks were
given syphyllis to see the long term effects on them. One of the saddest & darkest
days in this countries past.
NO DOUGH You just can't buy your way into heaven people. If you
don't have no soul you don't get in folks. Money can't buy salvation tune.
KENNEDY SONG The ultimate conspiracy tune. Mo knows what happened
to the eighteen minutes of the Nixon tapes. JFK, victim of the ultimate drive bye.
SWEET SOUL MUSIC A lament on the lack of sweet soul music in our
culture today. Where blues & gospel come together people. A missing Motown tune.
WILLIE B & ME Osde to a childhood friend who turned him on to the
blues. A tune for those preciousa childhood memories we all cling to.
GONE FISHING Mo & his buddy go fishing & I am not talking fish.
Mo goes trolling for ladies on this tune. Hope you hook one Mo:)
SHAME Some Motown magic here. Uptempo, hopping little tune & a
great way to end disc. Mo Rodgers vision of the past & his look into the
future. A great CD for those who think. Hmmmmm.....

I really enjoy blues, but my favorite style of blues is the hard and fast guitar driven, rockin' blues (Popa Chubby, Jimmy Thackery, Too SLim and the Taildragger,...). Occasionally I find a new artist that shifts my perspective on what makes a really good blues album. This was one of those albums. It is full of powerful mood shifting music that grabs a hold of your emotional center and carries you with it.
Nothing is over the top, rhythms are tight and controlled, the guitar and bass are energetic and sharp, but don't overwhelm other aspects of the music. Mo's vocals are gritty and full of genuine emotion, never forced or strained beyond his abilities. The writing is sharp and interesting; I found myself on several occasions humming or singing several of these to myself; my favorites are the title track, and the "Kennedy Song".
I have just one problem; I still can't make out the last word(s) in the chorus on "The Kennedy Song"; ,"... he was a victim of the ultimate ... tried fact?,... true fact?,... anyhow, this is a minor knitpik on a truely exceptional album.
I can't believe someone with talent like this has never recorded solo before. I hope he found it satisfying, because I look forward to hearing something else from him. ky
