5.0 étoiles sur 5 Best Blues Instruction on the Planet! 12 février 2011

I researched for a long time and decided to try John Ganapes Blues You Can Use series of instruction books hoping that it would be a good resource for advancing my blues guitar skills. My needs were met in spades with the series. I have the Blues You Can Use lead book, the rhythm book and the chord book. All contain phenominal instruction. The exercises begin easy yet quickly become challenging. Each lesson seems to build upon the other, quite ingenious. The chord book presents excellent instruction into chord theory and construction. Who'd thought that a little ole blues book could do so. It hasn't just taught me how to play a chord, it's taught me the language of chords. I find myself being able to construct, extend and alter chords on my own without a chord chart and a lot of searching. It took a lot of work and hours of devotion, but I can talk with my guitar through chords. The exercises were fantastic and I firmly believe if you master those, learn the chords, the majors, minors, the 7ths, the triads, their inversions and play them all over the neck-whenever you perform, people will be wowed and amazed. In my opinion, it's all about chords, knowing chord inversions, chord substitutions, passing chords and they laying it all down with rhythm. In conjunction with the Ganape's Rhythm Guitar Course, I've become a strong asset on stage and other guitarists just love my comping, my passing chords and rhythm. It is becoming second nature. There needs to be more great rhythm guitar players. To me, I revisit this book from time to time and to me, that's a mark of a great book. Because of what it has shown me, I feel comfortable exploring additional study into jazz chords.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Chords I actually use 21 octobre 2014

To me it is just unbeliveable that an old book like this with no CD attached could give the keys not only to blues music but music in a general view. With all the multimedia we have nowadays this could look like old and obsolete method, but is not.

If you are like me are looking for the key tutorial for blues guitar, give first a try to this book, if you don't play guitar at all I recommend you to start with BLUES YOU CAN USE. That would be my recomendation

Why four stars and not five? Just because there is no CD, I just can dedicate 10 to 30 minutes to practice three times a week, so having the audio support while driving it will very helpful. The music theory you find here is focus in the chords construction, very recommendable.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I'm loving this book! 5 mai 2009

Having finished the first "Blues you can use" book, I figured that I'd give this book a try - just to learn some chord theory, if anything. Being a blues guitar enthusiast for about 2 years now, I have only the basic music theory knowledge. I'm learning a ton from this book; its material is laid out and explained in a way that is interesting easy to understand. The exercises provide a way to use what you've learned, and play the methods until the "muscle-memory" starts to take effect. I don't have much to list for details, as I'm only about halfway through this one, but I am really enjoying this book and learning a great deal. I recommend this one to any blues guitar enthusiast out there - it's well worth the money!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Way more than I expected 3 juillet 2004

I thought this was just another chord encyclopedia. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that this thing is much, much more. It starts with a fairly thorough explanation of the theory of chord construction - how chords are built by stacking 3rds on top of each other, how the type of thirds used determine the type of chord, etc. Then you get the chord encyclopedia, which of course focuses on the types of chords most often used in blues playing. Each type (triad, seventh, ninth, thirteenth etc.) has a corresponding section in the theory part of the book, so if you're interested in that you can get a really good understanding of this stuff. If you're not interested, it still makes a good chord encyclopedia. All the inversions of each type of chord are covered, and the explanations are easy to understand, i.e. here's the first inversion with the root in the bass, the second with the third in the bass, the third with the 5th in the bass, etc.
After that there are the exercises. These are really the best part. Any book can show you a bunch of chords, but this one shows you how to use them in all sorts of blues progressions. There's a whole lot of these progressions, in a wide variety of styles. A great deal of effort was put into making this a real learning experience - the exercises deal with having you practice the various types of chords, then gets into using passing chords, and even how chords resolve and how you can temporarily change the key of a song, etc. etc. etc. And of course these concepts are all demonstrated via blues progressions you can actually play.
I hate to sound like I'm gushing, but hey, I expected just another chord encyclopedia, and got something much more. A real compendium of theory, chords, and best of all, how to use them. A thorough, detailed, and extensive (35 pages) section on how to use them. If you're interested in blues rhythm playing, this book will give you a lifetime of stuff to work with.
One note, if you're just starting, you might want to get the Blues You Can Use book and work through that first. This thing more or less assumes you're familiar with blues rhythm playing, and want to take it to the next level.
