Présentation de l'éditeur

A WildBlue Press original true crime story from the New York Times bestselling author of MONSTER and NO STONE UNTURNED, describing in dramatic detail and with heart-rending poignancy the efforts of tenacious Texas lawmen to solve the cold case murders of three little girls and hold their killer accountable for his horrific crimes.

"Jackson gives a master class on true crime reporting in BOGEYMAN. He writes with both muscle and heart."
--Gregg Olsen, New York Times bestselling author of IF I CAN'T HAVE YOU

"Absorbing and haunting! BOGEYMAN spills creepily across the page with Steve Jackson's hellacious verve and insight, reminding us there are few better explorers of the American berserk."--Ron Franscell, bestselling author of THE DARKEST NIGHT

"Steve Jackson's latest, BOGEYMAN, reveals a living, breathing nightmare that haunted parents, as well as detectives. Be sure to add it to your reading list if you're a fan of true crime books."--Aaron Habel, host of Generation Why Podcast

From the book: "For years he'd stalked elementary schools and playground looking for young girls from low-income neighborhoods to abduct, rape and murder. He thought of them as "throwaway kids"--hardly missed, and soon forgotten, except by those who loved them. He was every parent's worst nightmare. The bogeyman they warned their children about ... the fiend who lurked outside bedroom windows."

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Well worth the read! 27 août 2014

This is the first book written by Steve Jackson that I’ve read and I was quite impressed. I think the reader must first understand what this book is about, before judgments should be made. The book does not exploit these innocent children by providing graphic details of the horror they were subjected to, nor does it spend any more time than necessary focusing on the worthless, hateful monster that committed those horrors. Instead, it offers a unique perspective of these cases by allowing the reader to understand the dedication and persistence it took these detectives, particularly Detective Gary Sweet, to solve these unimaginable crimes. As well as the personal toll it took on them and their families. In a time when we are consistently being made aware of the “bad apples” in policing, it was nice to be reminded that there are even more “good guys” working tirelessly and, sometimes, thanklessly to find justice, no matter the cost. I applaud Mr. Jackson for identifying the need for this book to be written and doing so in such an insightful manner. I have incredible respect for the detectives involved in these cases and hope that they are proud of their accomplishment, in spite of some of the negative reviews I’ve seen written here. Without these detectives, these beautiful children may not have received the justice they deserved to allow them to rest in peace. I’d also like to believe that the people tormented by these cases, both still living and not, such as the victims’ family members, witnesses, near victims, and Mr. Holleman have somehow managed to find a little peace, too.

This book tore me up. And I'm not that easy to tear up. Yet...tore up in a good way. Let me explain...The dedication demonstrated by the police departments to take down this serial rapist of little girls (a real life bogeyman) was incredibly moving to read about. I guess I never really though hard enough about the impact investigating these types of violent crimes would have on our officers and their families. Its profoundly brought to light in this book and I believe I'm forever changed in how I will view those men and women who tirelessly work to protect us regular folk.

The serial rapist, David Penton, is a monster. And so heinous were his deeds, I believe if not for the superb talent of this author to expertly pen this story the kindest way he could, I'm not sure I could have continued. This crime is appalling, as is the case whenever children are hurt, so it may not be for the faint of heart. Just wanted to give you a heads-up. That said, I'm rating it at 5 stars and I'd give more if I could. Its superbly written, so compelling it kept me up all night reading, and simply a very powerful lesson can be learned from it.

So impassioned was the writing, I may or may not have cried a few tears at this part when the detective who cracked the case finally has his moment with Penton... "Sweet stopped him by holding up his hand. "You misunderstand," he said, his tone matter-of-fact. "We didn't come here to talk to you about whether or not you did it; we know you did it. We just wanted to meet you before we bring you back to Texas and kill you." All the feelings I experienced at that one moment were overwhelming - pride, relief, appreciation, and much much more. I highly recommend this book to any true crime fan.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent account of the journey for justice for child victims 18 août 2016

Bogeyman is an excellent book. I could not put it down. It is the story of the journey to convict and put away child serial killer David Eliot Penham. Penham is indeed the bogeyman that parents were and are afraid of. Steve Jackson made the characters come alive. I could easily picture them, and sympathize with those who worked so hard to get justice for all of the victims of Penham, even those not identified yet.

I highly recommend this book. Steve Jackson is a great author.

This is the true story of a vile sexual predator who abducts, assaults, kills and throws away children usually 4 - 8 and girls. One of the better rendition of the police officers who must face situations that tears their hearts and guts apart, but who with tenacity work countless hours to bring closure to cases for the victims families. The setting is in the Dallas Metroplex circa 1985 through 1988. Additionally, the victims families and the heartaches that they suffer for the remainder of their lives is well chronicled. One can only imagine the anxiety and anguish that the families must endure. Recommend as a good emotional read.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Bogeymen do exist 7 mars 2015

Bogeymen do exist among us, searching for their young victims, our children. Steve Jackson did a great job in his book, Bogeyman, telling us the story about one David Penton, would kidnap, rape and murder young girls. It took a big toll on officers and family, in looking for the person. As with a lot of cases many go cold as did the murders of some girls. One, Officer Sweet found a box that changed his life forever. He searched through the old case file of a murdered young girl, he decided he was going to find justice for her. I recommend this book for everyone, especially parents with young ones. It will remind you to keep your little ones close to you.
