Description du produit

Présentation de l'éditeur

EIGHTY PIECES OF SHORT FICTION AND NONFICTION ON MANHOOD BY SOME OF THE WORLD'S BEST WRITERS, PRESENTED BY COLUM MCCANN, ESQUIRE, AND NARRATIVE 4

To help launch the literary nonprofit Narrative 4, Esquire asked eighty of the world's greatest writers to chip in with a story, all with the title, "How to Be a Man."

The result is The Book of Men, an unflinching investigation into the essence of masculinity.

The Book of Men probes, with the poignant honesty and imagination that only these writers could deliver, the slippery condition of manhood. You will find men striving and searching, learning and failing to learn, triumphing and aspiring; men who are lost and men navigating their way toward redemption. These stories don't just explore what it is to be a man or how to achieve manliness, but ultimately what it is to be a human—with all of its uncertainty, complexity, clumsiness, and beauty.

With contributions from literary luminaries as diverse as the subjects they capture, and curated by the editors of Esquire, National Book Award winner Colum McCann, and Narrative 4, a global nonprofit devoted to using storytelling as a means to empathy, The Book of Men might not teach you how to negotiate a deal or mix a Manhattan, but it does scratch at that most eternal of questions: What is a man?

This book is not relevant at all to its title and is completely not relative to men today. A very poor edit. I would not recommend or read again.

I was talking to a women at work about my passion for reading. I was taken aback when she said her reading club only reads novels by women author. Oh well, to each her own. That is why my only complaint about this book is the inclusion of women authors. I was expecting a book for men solely written by men.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 An enlightening little book filled with short stories on what it means to be a MAN !!! 11 décembre 2013

Liked the entire format. 80 writers giving a 2-3 page opinion on what it means to be a man. Everyone's opinion is so very different, that overall it is very enlightening. Well written, nice cover, good size print. Am still reading it, and loving it so far. Will come back and change the current 4 Star Review if I need to. Probably upgrade to a 5.

Try to step into the shoes of the new American man, whatever that means, right? Maybe it means reviewing a book you yourself contributed to, the weird dance of marketer/author, the constant temptation of the self-licking ice cream cone in the disintegrating world of intellectual property. I felt honored to be a part of this book, but my contribution pales next to Jess Walter's, Khaled Hosseini's and Colum McCann's. Of course, that could just be a self-deprecating tactic to get you to read my piece, a story about an Iraqi-American from the future who is confronted with a choice: if a woman is burning herself alive, do you put her out? Well, how do we deal with crises like these, the schizo spirit we're importing to the world? "Do I contradict myself? Very well, then. I contradict myself." These are the words of Whitman, and to this day they speak to the struggle of the American man, the torn men you'll meet in these pages. I'm proud of this review. I'm ashamed of this review. Buy the book. Please. All the proceeds go to charity.

Better title "writing nonsensically " There is no "how" here! Obtuse! A complete waste of time and money! Not for anyone looking for advice based on life experience.
