Présentation de l'éditeur

WHAT KIND OF MAN MAKES A LIVING IN HELL?

His name’s Roland. Soldier class, a former mercenary, he’s on a full-time mission to scrape a living out of the most dangerous planet in the galaxy.

Is he qualified? He’s well armed, he’s ruthless, and he’s tougher than skag hide. And, oh yeah—he’s strapped with some of the most exotic weaponry this side of the Vault, not to mention possessing fists like chunks of steel.

Zac Finn and his wife and young son had better get on the right side of Roland, because a stopover in orbit has turned into a nightmarish fall to the unforgiving landscape of the Borderlands. Zac hopes to find a strange new alien treasure in the Borderlands to turn his down-spiraling life around. But his wife, Marla, and his son, Cal, just want to survive, and reunite, because catastrophe has left them separated by hundreds of klicks. Their chances aren’t good . . . and Roland is all that stands between them and the planet’s kill-crazed Psychos and murderous bandits—not to mention the grotesque primals, giant wyrm squids, insane tunnel rats, voracious skags, brutal bruisers, and ruthless mercs. . . .

An original novel set in the universe of the Rated M for Mature video game created by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games.

Now, I am not a gamer, so I was kinda skeptical about trying this book out. But, because I am familiar with this authors works on the Alien & Predator franchises, I took a chance.

Plus, I love these Mad Max post-holocaust scenarios. And this one payed off in spades. Just like the game-turned-into-novel RAGE, Borderlands: The Fallen is an exciting, action-filled romp with loads of interesting characters. The world of Pandora is harsh, and chock-full of strange beats and more savage humans. This book follows a small family who is separated after their spaceship is destroyed while stopping at Pandora for a layover.

The father, mother and son drop down to the planet in their eject tubes, and are miles away from each other on a very hostile planet. Folks, this is what movies should be made of! What follows are three separate hair-raising adventures that culminates in a wild romp that I'd love to see in a future sequel. This is not heavy duty sci-fi, but it actual is pretty character-driven, and has some well thought out subplots that I didn't expect.

If you like a hardcore sci-fi adventure, but not too heavy with the science, then John Shirley delivers the good here. He's a solid writer in this genre. I hope this becomes a series of books. There is tons more to explore in this universe.

Frankly, I'm surprised there's not more reviews on this book. It is very entertaining. Right Harriet? (LOL!)

HASH(0x8cb47cb4) étoiles sur 5 Really fun read, More? Pretty please or a Skagg'll bite ya! 2 mai 2012

If you enjoyed the game (you'd have to try hard not to) then you'll really enjoy the book.

I'm of the opinion (sounds very upper class, yeah:)) that BorderLands is one of those pretend universes or realities or whatever that has loads of untap'd story and game potential.

This book was a fun read, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hungry for a boat load more. Not just centric to one of the orignal 4 characters but some of the npc's from the orignal game as well. When Pandora was initially colonized there must of been an initial fellow that blundered into the Vault, what was his/her/their story?
It's got endless possibilities, I think, and I'd love to read boat loads of such books.

In anycase, even if you haven't played the game, the book would probably still be just as fun a read, give it a try:)

While this provides an interesting look at the world beyond the videogame, the book is poorly written with one dimensional characters. The only thing I thought was well done was the broad concept of Pandora as a harsh planet with no chance of survival. Throwing in quotes from the first game seemed contrived and distracted from the narrative. That being said, as a hardcore fan of Borderlands, I have to admit that there was some interesting backstory. Not worth the $10 I paid for it, but has some redeeming qualities

John Shirley is shaping up to be a good auther of the Sci Fi game genre. He keeps the characters belivable and true to the game. Even the dialogue from the enraged bandits and psychos is straight from the game, this doesn't reflect lazyness so much as add to the feel of the book. Very enjoyable for players of the game and for fans of science fiction.
