Revue de presse

“Even readers who never heard Woody or his songs will understand the current esteem in which he’s held after reading just a few pages… Always shockingly immediate and real, as if Woody were telling it out loud… A book to make novelists and sociologists jealous.”—The Nation

"Deserves the attention of this generation... It is not only a fascinating autobiography, it is a voice from the grass roots of America... Woody speaks for the indomitable spirit of an independent man who set out to do his own thing."—Library Journal

"Woody Guthrie was the greatest composer and singer of folk songs America has produced. In his autobiography, he tells how he grew up in Oklahoma, rode the rails, and found inspiration for his music through his own hard times during the Depression. As his songs attrest, he's a good prose stylist, with an ear for the patterns of American speech."—The Washington Post --Ce texte fait référence à une édition épuisée ou non disponible de ce titre.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Chronicling some from the point of view of one of the twentieth century's most influential musicians, Woody Guthrie's Bound for Glory includes an introduction by Joe Klein, author of Primary Colors, in Penguin Modern Classics. 'Now I been here an' I been there,Rambled aroun' most everywhere' Bound for Glory is the funny, cynical and earthy autobiography of Woody Guthrie, the father of modern American folk music. He tells of his childhood running wild in an Oklahoma oil-boom town, the tragedies that struck his family and of life on the open road during the Great Depression - hell-raising and brawling in boxcars, all while singing to raise a dime for his next meal. But above all, this is a song for the America that Woody saw from his lonesome highway, as he travelled from one end of the country to the other with guitar in hand and the songs that made him a legend drifting out over the Dust Bowl. Adapted into an Oscar-winning film starring David Carradine, Bound for Glory is the moving true story of America's greatest folksinger. Woody Guthrie (1912-67), the son of a cowboy, was born in rural Oklahoma. When the Depression arrived, Woody hit the road and travelled round America. He became a folksinger, guitarist, actor, artist and broadcaster, and is best remembered for songs including 'This Land is Your Land', 'Roll On, Columbia, Roll On' and 'Worried Man Blues'. If you enjoyed Bound for Glory, you might like Jack Kerouac's On the Road, also available in Penguin Modern Classics. 'Wild as a train whistle in the mountains, a scrumptious picture of fighting, carousing, singing, laughing migratory across America'The New York Times 'One of the patron saints of American rebelliousness'Joe Klein 'Even readers who never heard Woody or his songs will understand the current esteem in which he's held after reading just a few pages . . . always shockingly immediate and real, as if Woody was telling it out loud . . . A book to make novelists and sociologists jealous' The Nation

I like his music and I can relate to his importance as an American archetype. I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't. Maybe the problem is that it's called and autobiography when it's so obviously full of tall tales & fancy. The writing is strong, I just couldn't believe hardly a word of it and I finally gave up at the part that graphically describes the mutilation of small animals. Who needs this? I'll stick with his songs.

Very interesting for me personally because he was about the same age as my father and from a town very close to where my father was born. Until he left that area as a young adult I felt that I could have been reading about my father's boyhood. A good read irrespective of that however. I was fascinated by the conditions of the era. Perhaps the most interesting thing about Woody is how (you'll find) he actually loved his lifestyle.

Other reviewers note that "Bound for Glory" is important for the view it gives us of our nation and people in Guthrie's time. It is also a must-read for today, a time when our nation is so divided between rich and poor with a a crashing, shrinking middle class. As in his time, many today have lost jobs, lost homes, gone hungry, and lost hope. Today, we are more removed from the land than in his time and less able to cope with poverty. Many today will find themselves in this book - and perhaps find also coping skills and hope needed to persevere and survive until they reach a better place.

I have known about this book for rears, but finally read it. Woody Guthrie was an incredibly caring man who had a very hard childhood. His adult life did not get much easier. He cared about the downtrodden souls of this country. He saw no color or religious lines, people's lives and names were important to him. He left a legacy still unfolding.

This is a Fascinating autobiography by an American folk singer and legend who rode the rails with and sang about the downtrodden regular folk, their hard lives, struggles, and simple joys. He was one of them.
