This book does a great service in including lesser-known boutiques and personalities from the sixties, more than the usual Mary Quants and Barbara Hulanickis. The organization of the text is also easy to follow and interesting, covering familiar topics like Quant, Biba, men's boutiques, and psychedelia as well as less familiar topics like boutiques in cities besides London, home dressmaking, and marketing to the United States. Those already familiar with the subject of the book will welcome the inclusion of more obscure names and the personal reminiscences from the era's scenesters. Visually, the book is stunning, with loads of striking photographs, fashion illustrations, and pictures of contemporary publications. A major drawback, though, is that only a small minority of the photos and other illustrations are identified as to year, which is a problem in a book that covers a period from the late 1950s to the early 1970s and tends to place photos from different years next to each other. A photo from the mid-sixties will be placed next to a photo from the early seventies next to a photo from the early sixties, etc, with no year identification on any. Readers unfamiliar with fashion history may come away with no idea of when different styles were worn, possibly thinking they were all worn at the same time. And there's no proper index to images at the back to help with year identification, only copyright info for each one. There are also no footnotes for quotes, so if you're interested in going to a source document to learn more, you're out of luck. To be fair, these kinds of omissions are more and more the trend in fashion publications, but they're still an inconvenience, and a serious disservice to those trying to learn the subject. Besides that, there were only a few terminological errors: an early seventies shag haircut referred to by the eighties term "mullet," which was a completely different type of hairstyle; a midiskirt referred to as a maxiskirt (midiskirts were casual A-line skirts to the calf, maxiskirts were casual A-line skirts to the floor).
