Présentation de l'éditeur

Most of us have no idea what’s really going on inside our heads. Yet brain scientists have uncovered details every business leader, parent, and teacher should know—like the need for physical activity to get your brain working its best.

How do we learn? What exactly do sleep and stress do to our brains? Why is multi-tasking a myth? Why is it so easy to forget—and so important to repeat new knowledge? Is it true that men and women have different brains?

In Brain Rules, Dr. John Medina, a molecular biologist, shares his lifelong interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work. In each chapter, he describes a brain rule—what scientists know for sure about how our brains work—and then offers transformative ideas for our daily lives.

Medina’s fascinating stories and infectious sense of humor breathe life into brain science. You’ll learn why Michael Jordan was no good at baseball. You’ll peer over a surgeon’s shoulder as he proves that most of us have a Jennifer Aniston neuron. You’ll meet a boy who has an amazing memory for music but can’t tie his own shoes.

You will discover how:

Every brain is wired differently
Exercise improves cognition
We are designed to never stop learning and exploring
Memories are volatile
Sleep is powerfully linked with the ability to learn
Vision trumps all of the other senses
Stress changes the way we learn

In the end, you’ll understand how your brain really works—and how to get the most out of it.

HASH(0x954f1048) étoiles sur 5 A great overview of both findings in neuroscience as well as practical ways to apply them in everyday life 3 juillet 2014
Par Michael Schmatz - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle Achat vérifié
John splits the book up into twelve different sections, each with findings in neuroscience, as well as how to apply those findings practically. These sections are

Survival: How our brain is a product of our evolution, and some traits it has adopted as a result
Exercise: How exercise improves our cognitive abilities and staves off dementia
Sleep: What the brain does during sleep, how people are biologically predisposed to various sleep patterns, and how to use naps to improve performance
Stress: The various biochemicals involved with stress and how to have less stressful relationships and life
Wiring: How neurons interact, develop, and function
Attention: How multitasking works (or doesn't work), the relationship between emotion and attention, and the need for relaxation to enhance focus
Memory: How memory formation works and the optimal way to remember things
Sensory Integration: How all of the senses work together to provide a cohesive experience, and how multiple senses can be utilized to improve learning
Vision: How vision trumps all of the other senses and can be used to create more effective presentations
Music: How music can cause improvements in cognition, be therapeutic, and how music training can improve cognition
Gender: Differences between the genders in physiology, socialization, emotional reactions, and memory.
Exploration: How the brain is constantly exploring and looking for novel things

A lot of reviewers have pointed out that many of the tips that John gives are common sense - that may be true. However, I found that knowing the neuroscience behind many of the things which John advocates ensures their adoption into day-to-day life.

Overall, a great read that has caused me to change the way I give presentations, how much I exercise and sleep, as well as how I interact with people.

HASH(0x954f1294) étoiles sur 5 Thoughtful, relevant, and applicable. 18 mai 2014
Par Jay Shirley - Publié sur Amazon.com

As I read through this book I experienced a few emotions. The first is a sense of pride as I knew most of these, then that turned into shame as I was slightly off or a little misguided in my approach. Then hope and optimism.

Ultimately, it led me into revisiting my perception and belief of naps. I started doing self-experiments on naps and charting energy levels, along with creativity, and was completely surprised at the result. A 20 minute nap (no longer than 25 minutes!) was enough to recharge me in the afternoon. The way the information was laid out was approachable and easily adapted into daily life.

This book is not just informative and interesting, it also will call out the areas in which you can improve your own life.

HASH(0x954f14d4) étoiles sur 5 I'm not a doctor or scientist but here is a 5 star book! 19 mai 2014
Par Keith Dworak - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone with a strong knowledge of how the brain works. If you perform brain surgery, then this is not the book for you!

However if you are like me, an average American that is just a little bit curious on how we do all the things that we do then this is certainly the book for you! It is an easy read yet it is still packed full of medical terminology. There are many aspects and idea's in this book that everyone should be able to work into their daily lives and better yourself. It is full of simple, easy to understand and comprehend analogies that will give you those "ah ha" moments.

Once you read this cover to cover you will want to purchase another copy for friends or family! This truly is a must read.

HASH(0x954f15e8) étoiles sur 5 Fascinating read 20 juillet 2014
Par bananas - Publié sur Amazon.com

This book was one of those books that I had expect to be a very dry read having to read a sentence or two repeatedly to try to comprehend from time to time. I couldn't have been more wrong. I got completely sucked in, sometimes nodding my head, I KNEW IT! and sometimes shaking my head, Oh wow... Not only I liked the way the brain works is listed, but also the suggestions to change how we live our daily lives knowing how the brain works, i.e., company endorsed nap time, or treadmill desk instead of a cubicle, a team brainstorming walk instead of a meeting in a conference room, etc. Make me wonder how people are productive now while doing everything contrary to how brain works. Fascinating, them brains.
