Description du produit

Présentation de l'éditeur

It's 1995, and recent college graduate Caleb McIntyre has received a most unusual job offer, one that will move him halfway across the country, far away from Lizzie, the love of his life.

In a small Chicago suburb, Amanda Summers is at the end of her rope and desperate. Tired of being her husband's punching bag and with no friends or family to lean on, she embarks on her own journey to start a new life.

Their paths cross in the hot and dusty town of Crenshaw, Oklahoma, where the line between truth and fiction is often blurred. An encounter with the Arbuckle brothers, the local red neck mafia, forces them to work together. Can they trust each other? Can Caleb keep his promise to Lizzie?

Sometimes you have to move from your past and forge a new path. Sometimes you have to Break It.

I LOVED this book! I was supposed to be cleaning and doing stuff around my house, but once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down. The characters were well drawn and interesting, and I was immediately drawn in by Caleb and Amanda's very human struggles in the face of a tense, spy thriller-esque plot. I also thought the combination of first and third person worked really well in this novel. Caleb has a strong voice that draws you in, and Amanda's story is also compelling. I really admire Ben Muse for creating in Amanda a strong female lead who has suffered spousal abuse. This is a woman in a very precarious position who makes a plan and follows through with admirable bravery. I also really liked the host of reversals that flowed naturally from the characters as they breathed in the pages. This book is alive and exciting, with strong, well rounded characters that live in your mind long after the story is over. Wonderful read!

While I really enjoyed Ben Muse's Arnco I am calling it quits at the 26% mark of Break It. Even a good high school English student would catch the instances of "to" being used instead of "too', the use of "your" instead of "you're", and the use of "dad" when it should have been "Dad". There are phrases like: "...keep it as simple and as possible." and "...the hairs on her skin began to stand." and "I've got an 11:50 AM departure in the morning...". Women did not wear "Capris" in 1995. The story seemed contrived and the errors made it not worth my time to continue reading.

I have to disagree with the other reviewers so far. The best thing that could be said of this book is that it had some promise, but that promise got broken by the end of the book. There was no real plot development. Any results obtained were mundane, trite, and overly coincidental. I would categorize the character outcomes as sophomoric, and only that because I don't think freshmanic is a word. Altogether a mediocre work. His next book is much better and was the reason I bought this one. Had I read this one first I wouldn't have bothered with the second one. It's nice to see the improvement, though, and I will be interested in seeing if a series can really be successful.

This book is very well written. The author has an easy style of writing that is easy to follow. Muse engrosses you from the beginning, writing every emotion with precision. You'll love the characters and he will have you cheering them on throughout the book. This book will make you laugh (inside the mind of Caleb you get his witty personality from the start.) It will make you cry and it will make you laugh again. I couldn't put it down and would highly recommend this book on your summer reading list! Also can't wait for the sequel to this one in the Caleb McIntyre series.

This is the first offering from new writer, Ben Muse. While there are a few minor grammatical errors that you would expect from a new author without a fancy editor, overall the book is amazingly well written. Muse captivates from page one by dividing the story into two parts: Caleb and Amanda. Their stories play out side by side and then mesh into a page turning book that will keep you riveted.

Muse develops the characters very well and there were no points at which I was bored or tempted to switch to another story. I read this in an afternoon because I couldn't bear to not find out what would happen to the heroine. As a potential drawback, Muse heavily uses the art of foreshadowing. In his next offering, I hope to see a more subtle approach. Overall a wonderful read if you like romance and thrillers. Hopefully this is the beginning of a prolific career for Ben Muse.
