Présentation de l'éditeur

USA Today bestselling author Catherine Gayle presents the first novel in the Portland Storm hockey romance series.

Portland Storm captain Eric “Zee” Zellinger knows how to get the job done, but leading his once elite team to victory is fast becoming a losing battle. He can’t lose focus now—not with his career on the line. But when his best friend’s little sister makes him an offer he can’t refuse, Eric could lose the drive the team relies on from their captain.

Still in a downward spiral after a life-altering event in college, Dana Campbell is desperate to try anything to break away from the horror of that fateful night—even enlisting the help of the only man she trusts completely.

No matter how irresistible she is or how tempting the offer, Eric might not be able to cross that line—especially with the team’s chance at the playoffs on the line. Now, Eric has to take one last shot, but will he choose Dana’s Breakaway chance at happiness or the move that could secure his career?

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A very good book on a difficult subject 25 avril 2014

I will say that if I'd know the premise of this story, I wouldn't have bought the book. I'm going to say it here so that others can make the choice for themselves. Not everyone wants to read about such a sensitive subject. Having said that I really did enjoy the book and have downloaded the next one in the series already.

The h was gang raped when she was in her late teens and since then has not been able to let anyone touch her. She's had years of counselling and therapy but can't move past the incident. She wants a relationship and children and her therapist suggests that she choose someone she trusts to initiate her to sex. She chooses her brother's best friend who is the Captain of a hockey team. The H has always had a thing for the h but she doesn't know it and he never acted on it because initially she was too young. It's a very difficult thing for both of them to go through but the H finally agrees to help her and she moves to be with him for a few months before she has to go back to work.

I adored the H. He must be one of my favourite Hs ever. My heart broke for the h too after everything that she'd been through. Although it isn't an easy subject, this is a love story and I do recommend it.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Nice story that I don't regret reading 10 janvier 2016

Breakaway was a good book. The writing was done well and the story was good. However, I would recommend that the author put a trigger warning on this story. It's content could be difficult for some people.

What I liked. I liked that Dana didn't give up on herself. She had experienced something horrific in her past and although she was traumatized by what happened to her, she wanted to work and grow to get past it. She felt the only way of doing that was pursuing her long time childhood crush Eric.
Eric was her brother's best friend growing up and now he is a professional hockey player. I liked that Eric wasn't the typical alpha male. I loved that he was sympathetic and desperately wanted to do everything possible to help Dana. I also loved that Eric knew who he was and what he wanted out of life. The only thing that held him back was Dana's trauma. He wanted her desperately, but he didn't want to do anything to make her terror worse.

What I didn't like. I didn't like that most of the action was told to us as opposed to allowing us to experience it through Dana and Eric. I also didn't like that there was so much hockey. I understand that this is a sports romance, however we don't need several chapters focusing on scenes for random hockey games. Maybe if those scenes would have had Dana helping Eric get over his scoring slump since she was also a great hockey player or if those scenes helped advance the story, they would have been fine. But neither of those things happened. Most of the scenes on the ice were pointless and seemed almost to just help with word count.

All in all, this was a good story and worth reading if you're looking for an easy read. I'll be honest and say that I skimmed quite a bit through this story. There's a little too much internal monologue that doesn't really mean anything and all of that monologue is pretty redundant. If you can get past that, it's a nice story that I don't regret reading.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 slow..slow... but finished. 11 novembre 2015

The story immediately opened up with Dana asking Eric, her brother's best friend, for a HHUUUGGGEEE favor to conquer her panic attacks. That lasted about 10 pages. Which meant the next 311 of the 321 pages is based on Eric's response, the steps/growth of Eric helping Dana conquer her panic attacks and Dana learning she is beautiful. Eric states, "the physical goes in hand with the emotional side." So in other words, the climax of the story is how Eric and Dana handle the emotional side of the growing relationship. And that is only the last 30 pages.

Ms. Gayle had a great story but for me it was executed just to darn slow. The story is written in first person but it was more of the characters telling the story vs the author telling it. How do I explain it is more of telling the action vs being live action. Make sense? HA. Probably only to me. I am at a point in my reading that if I'm just not feeling it...I stop and maybe pick it up later or its not even worth it and it goes in the "not finished" category.I'm glad I finished but if I was honest..If there had been another book in the wings waiting for me to read. This book would have it the cloud.

By the way I started off my review, You would have thought i gave it a one star. But that isn't the case. I did end up enjoying the story and the characters. I am glad that I finished it. and the dual POV made the story.

At the end of the book, you get a preview of the second book. I read the preview and it actaully started off 100% better than this book.

Unexpectedly great. I'm from the southwest so i grew to love hockey through the books that I have read. I thought Toni Aleo's Assassins series was good well I gotta tell you Ms. Gayle's series blows that out of the water. I hate cliff hangers with a passion, especially when authors don't warn the reader in advance. But I think it's a great marketing ploy when authors writing a series, with stand alone book free so that readers can get a feel for their books to entice them to read their series. I loved this book. It was difficult to read due to the subject but I appreciate the real life story Ms. Gayle writes. I appreciate an author giving me the choice to read the series of books they are offering.

In comparison some of Toni's h characters are weak whiny females that I can barely tolerate. Ms. Gayle's h characters are well written and strong. I will buy every single one of the books in this series. I don't know much about hockey but I love football and baseball so I appreciate the play by play in her books.

Her characters are real and well developed. I simply adore Jamie (Babs) and his family. I've been reading the box set of the first 3 books so I am totally in love with this franchise and the team (family). If you love the Assassins series I highly recommend this series. It is far better!!
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Eric(Zee) has been best friends with her brother Soupy forever which means he's ... 18 juin 2017

Zee and Dana are your classic forbidden fruit story. Eric(Zee) has been best friends with her brother Soupy forever which means he's known her as well. The whole family is hockey crazed and Dana was no exception. She was skilled on the ice and people noticed, unfortunately it attracted all kinds. Dana's story is a very sad but she refuses to give up. I had to admire her unwillingness to just accept her weaknesses an fear and continue her fight to get her life back. 7 years have passed and she still cannot let a man touch her. She seeks Eric out and I found it sweet how even though they were apart most that time his house was set up to welcome her home. It's clear that he has feelings for Dana and had every intention when the timing was right to let her know those feelings.

Dana has always crushed on Eric but he has always looked at her as Soupy's little sister. In deed, he refers to her as kid but what she doesn't get is he does that to remind himself not yet. The idea is interesting Dana wants Eric to treat her as he would a woman, there by retraining her body to acknowledge all touches are not bad. Like I said it's interesting but it took extraordinary strength on Dana's part because she had so much deep rooted fear. That is what struck me wrong. It is obvious the two have a great bond of trust, that being said I couldn't understand why it was so hard to tell each other their true hearts desire. They are right there and yet, nothing. If you express the biggest fear and start to rise above could not see why this one made any difference. Your already exposed it would have really made it so much sweeter to see the two come together earlier instead of toward the end.

When Zee does come for Dana it is very romantic. Replacing something similar to what was lost so long ago it capped off the kind of man he was. I just wish we would have got to see the two together as a pair for longer but maybe in later books. I know this is book is the first in the series haven't looked at them yet. I found this one on the freebie list and thought it sounded powerful. Eric is sweet and thoughtful on so many levels and Dana is trying to heal her open wounds. This isn't overly dark and the attack and rape are never fully exposed in details but there is definitely enough of a description to let you in on the horror and pain she sustained. There are also sex scenes(non violent) but not overly done. Enjoy!
