Présentation de l'éditeur

The Netherlands has been one of the world's most distinctive and sophisticated football cultures. From the birth of Total Football in the sixties, through two decades of World Cup near misses to the exiles who remade clubs like AC Milan, Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea in their own image, the Dutch have often been dazzlingly original and influential. The elements of their style (exquisite skills, adventurous attacking tactics, a unique blend of individual creativity and teamwork, weird patterns of self-destruction) reflect and embody the country's culture and history. This book lays bare the elegant, fractured soul of the Dutch Masters and the culture that spawned them by exploring and analysing its key ideas, institutions, personalities and history in the context of wider Dutch society. --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition Broché .

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A brilliant read about the Dutch - and their football 22 août 2014

I was never a big football fan. I would watch some matches during big tournaments but that was it. Then something very strange happened to me during last summer’s World Cup 2014 - I became fascinated about the game, but not just any team’s game. It was the Dutch matches that I enjoyed the most. I couldn’t really understand it – what was it about the Dutch that made me almost spellbound when watching them play. (I watched the Holland vs. Spain game three times and I still keep watching the highlights). Since I didn’t really know anything about football, I had to learn more.
While looking for articles about the Dutch football I came across references to David Winner’s book. How fortunate for me, that there actually was a book to explain why Dutch football is worth an interest. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It is as beautiful as the game is at its best. The book also offers you an insight into the Dutch mindset beyond football. You learn about Dutch history, art and society while learning about their great players and the total football. You don’t actually need to be a football fan to enjoy the book.
I hope David Winner enjoyed the success of the Dutch team in the 2014 World Cup and that he will add a new final chapter. The one added after the 2010 World Cup gives the book a somewhat gloomy finish. After all, total football is back!

A book written for true soccer fans. Quotes & statements from players, coaches, authors etc. I'm only 27, but it brought me back and helped me experience a different time period as well as imagine the surroundings. The author ties in very unique comparisons to the Dutch way of life & to football. A rare type of book.., one that you put in the short stack of "keep and re-read" instead of the huge stack of "get too later." Enjoy yourself & always enjoy football.

David Winner clearly put a lot of work into this book, which not only gives a great insight into Dutch football, but also looks at the society and psyche. Well worth reading for all football fans especially with the World Cup on the horizon

Great insights on Dutch culture! Especially the thesis that both football and culture are defined by the experience of space in the Netherlands is very fruitful!

Not a bad book, but it almost lost me early on with all the nonsense about architecture etc. Thankfully the remainder of the book was more about football.
