Présentation de l'éditeur

<span id="caseCorrespondence_14967792156_text"> When my teacher, Mr Fullerman, doesn t have his BEADY EYES on me, I like to draw pictures and write stories about stuff like when we had the worst holiday ever (camping sucks), and when my parents came to school for parents evening (groan), and about how Marcus Meldrew is the most annoying boy in the world and how I don t want to sit next to him in class. All I want to do is get tickets to see the best band ever, DUDE3, when they come to town. It s not easy when I m up against Delia, my weirdo big sister, and all my plans seem to get me into MAJOR TROUBLE.
Tom Gates is a master of excuses, expert doodler, comic story writer extraordinaire and the bane of his grumpy teacher Mr Fullerman s life. And in his wacky journal of scribbles and silliness, you ll find all sorts of comic craziness to make you groan with glee! Will Tom ever manage to get his homework in on time, avoid the rage of his teacher AND impress Amy Porter, who sits next to him? Warning! Do not attempt to read this in public. You will snigger loudly!
Winner of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, the Best Book for Younger Readers - Red House Children s Book Award and the Waterstones Children s Book Prize 5 - 12 year-olds category. The other titles in this series are: TOM GATES: EXCELLENT EXCUSES (AND OTHER GOOD STUFF)(9781407124407); TOM GATES: EVERYTHING S AMAZING (SORT OF) (9781407124414); TOM GATES: GENIUS IDEAS (MOSTLY)(9781407134505). This book takes the form of Tom s battered homework diary crammed with his scribbles and stories and is totally accessible for boys and girls and reluctant readers. Honest, silly, and laugh-out-loud funny, Tom Gates is a superb voice for children of 9+.

Excellent livre ! Je le recommande comme une première lecture en anglais pour un jeune niveau 3ème, seconde. Mes élèves ont bien aimé, il y a beaucoup d'illustrations qui facilitent la compréhension.
Personnellement, je l'ai dévoré !

Here's a titanic trans-Atlantic heavyweight match: Jeff Kinney's Wimpy Kid and Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants versus Liz Pichon's Tom Gates and anyone in a David Walliams book. Classic. And the smart money is on the duo from the U.K. Walliams is the current king of kid lit in Britain with most of his books holding most of the top spots on everyone's lists. But the Tom Gates books, and there must be a half dozen by now, are holding their own nicely.

Tom Gates is a fifth grade boy whose innocent hi-jinks always seem to get him into trouble. Undaunted, he is a master of excuses, explanations, stories and embellishments. He is neither whiny nor wimpy nor particularly devious. Rather, he is just one big bundle of life, energy, optimism and gung-ho deadpan knuckleheadedness. Titles in the series describe his "Brilliant" world, his "Fantastic" world, his "Excellent" world and his "Amazing" world, and that pretty much sums up his cheerful and whole-hearted embrace of life.

The book is printed to appear like a hand written diary, with loads of drawings and doodles, which makes it easy to approach and read and easy to like. The supporting characters - parents, teachers, mates, classmates, and long suffering sister - all add their bits to the action and are sketched with great insight, if not always affection.

The book has a few over-arching plot points, (trying to score concert tickets and trying to have a band), some sub-plots, (crushing on a class mate Amy, who thinks he's an idiot), and a lot of one off set pieces, (class trip to the museum). This keeps the action moving at a fast pace and keeps us from getting bogged down in any complicated plotting. We flip through Tom's school year the same way he does, careening from emergency to emergency and just trying to stay afloat.

But bottom line - it's funny, it's honest in an exaggerated way, and it features a hero who, by gosh, you just like. Can't do much better than that.

Please note that I bought this book on spec because of its great buzz. I'm happy I did. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher or the marketing agent of this book.

From annoying his big sister Delia to playing in his band 'Dog Zombies', Tom's life is action packed everyday.

His hobbies are:1. Hiding his sister's glasses(I thought hiding them in the salad packet was very inspirational!)
2. Eating caramel wafers
3. being in a band

Then all of a sudden some awesome news - his favourite band - DUDE 3 - are coming to do a concert at his town! He's desperate for tickets but will he earn them in time? And will inviting Amy Porter whom he has a secret crush on make it any easier?

Read this awesome book to find out about a parent's evening that goes terribly wrong, an enemy's dad that saves the day and much more.Welcome to the brilliant word of Tom Gates!

Yay! My 8 year old finally found another series that he is as obsessed about as Wimpy Kid! My son is not a big reader - he doesn't find many books interesting enough to hold his attention for long - but he LOVES these books. This series is relatable to most kids in upper elementary and middle school. I'm just very happy he's found something that he enjoys to read. If your child likes Wimpy Kid - he'll love this series! It's very funny and similar design style.

The Brilliant World of Tom Gates is a fun easy to read fictional story about a fifth grade student named Tom Gates. He keeps a daily journal for writing and drawing about his school experiences and family adventures. Tom is often bored at school and makes funny creative excuses for not doing his homework assignments. At home, he likes to play jokes on his sister and spending time planning the future of his band called DogZombies. My favorite part of this book is Tom’s preparation and description of his family’s first outdoor camping vacation. They got lost while driving and get a flat tire. The family then gets caught in a rain storm and their tent blows away. The family was not happy with the campsite experience. I feel readers and students of all ages will enjoy the characters, illustrations and the imagination of Tom Gates. I’m giving a rating of five stars for The Brilliant World of Tom Gates.

This is very funny book. The text is written in such a way that the reader will feel like he/she is talking/listening to Tom Gates. Included are illustrations with hilarious speech bubbles. The character Tom Gates has a very vivid imagination. The reader will see that throughout the pages as they read the story.

The reader will feel like they are in Tom Gates' mind. He makes positive and negative comments about his home life and school life, his family and his friends. Everything that is happening in his life you will "hear" about through his writings.

At the end of the book is a step by step drawing guide for the reader to produce a drawing of his sister Delia.

In my opinion, this book is appropriate for an older child who loves humor. It may encourage the child to write a journal and illustrate it too.
