Revue de presse

an amazing book built in two stages. Belfast, firstly, New York, each other. Two cities for two extraordinary lives. The story of those years is terrible humiliation, torture, acts of barbarism, man reduced to the level of a beast. Between Nazi concentration camps and gulags, Long Kesh finds its place among these horrors. --Le Figaro

…many twists and turns…perfect for a film… --Irish Times

tells the story of [Millar] an IRA activist imprisoned in the worst jails in Ireland, prior to one of the most famous robberies in American history. It this were fiction, it would be an excellent thriller, but it s a true story, sustained by terrific writing. --Rolling Stone Magazine

Présentation de l'éditeur

Security guards told the police that they were surprised by assailants who had somehow evaded the sophisticated security system. They could not say how many robbers there appears to be one of the biggest robberies in U.S. history.

New York Times, front page

In 1993 $7.4 million was stolen from the Brink s Armored Car Depot in Rochester, New York, the fifth largest robbery in US history. Sam Millar was a member of the gang who carried out the robbery. He was caught, found guilty and incarcerated, before being set free by Bill Clinton's government as an essential part of the Northern Ireland Peace Process.

This remarkable book is Sam's story, from his childhood in Belfast, membership of the IRA, time spent in Long Kesh internment camps and the Brinks heist and aftermath. Unputdownable.

Sam Millar writes some of the best noir fiction being published today and after reading this biography, it is easy to see where he gets his inspiration. Millar has lived a life that is truly fit to be made into a movie and I for one hope this book ends up in a movie format.

Millar's tale begins during his early years in Belfast and then recants his time spent in some of the most deplorable prison conditions I have read about. The fact that these conditions are far from fiction only add to the mystique to his life. The fact that he survived the brutalities he writes of without breaking and all the while staying true to his ideals speaks highly of his convictions and desire to stay true to himself and the causes of his comrades.
The retelling of the Brink's robbery reads like a well plotted action novel and I found myself fascinated that this was all a part of Millar's unbelievable life experiences. This biography is a must read for true-crime fans, noir fans and fans of all types of well written books. As a teacher, I think this would make a great reading assignment for older high school and college students, as the themes that run through this bio are very engaging and the book is well written.

This an extraordinary autobiography of man with "Nationalist Ideals" and grave problems with authority figures and structures. He appear to recognize his character flaws as he ends up interned with IRA militants interned by the British in Northern Ireland. The conditions of his imprisonment read like Devil's Island. After his release he sojourns to New York and attempt to hijack a "Brinks'"truck which ends in a tragic -comic series of events that even a movie thriller script writer would have difficulty imaging.Me. Millar is a gifted Irish writer with a unique talent of translating his actions into lyric prose. What a tale. Buy it,read it and hold your breath.Alan New Mexico USA
1.0 étoiles sur 5 Don't waste your money on a poorly written self serving book 10 mai 2015

This book is full of contradictions and omissions. It will no doubt appeal to the 5th generation Oirish American longing for freedom for the old country. The short two page chapters topped of by irrelevant quotes serve to distract and take away from what should be a longer narrative. Don't waste your money on a poorly written self serving book.
