5.0 étoiles sur 5 An Ageless Voice 27 avril 2010

From the opening strains of La Siteria, which evoke the soft breezes and strong coffee of a Havana morning, this CD is captivating. Omara Portuondo is in her mid- to late seventies, but her strong, emotive alto knows no age. This is Afro-Cuban music at its best. The rhythms are intoxicating and uniquely Cuban, and the backing band is the deservedly famous Buena Vista Social Club.

The rhumba-like number, Donde Estabas Tu, which was originally a dance production number at a Havana nightclub, is a standout on this CD. My kids like to dance to it. Omara's voice soars and the brass section rips. Several slower-paced, sadder songs follow, including Ella Y Yo, which features Ruben Gonzalez on the chorus. In No Me Lloras Mas, Omara and Ibrahim Ferrer have a snappy he said, she said quarrel with the breaks filled by a jazzy piano running up and down the scale.

Viente Anos is heartbreaking and Omara brings delicate credibility to a song about the end of a 20-year relationship, joined with a muted saxophone and violins. Siempre en Mi Corazon is sentimental and precisely timed. This CD is a treat. Omara's voice is like chocolate: rich, sweet, smooth, and exotic.

I speak very little Spanish, but this is one of my favorite CDs.

Euphoria. Endorphin overload. Shake yourself a martini or something equally svelte, put this on, find the divan on the patio and just let all gringo unpleasantness evaporate into the Habana infused dusk.

This is the best of all the Buena Vista Social Club productions, IMAO. And whatever that woman up in one of the featured reviews means in saying that this music isn't danceable, I have no idea. Maybe she's in traction or something and can't move. I mean, I barely can myself. It takes something special to bring whatever rhythm I have out of me, but Omara does it every time. No drum machines or thumping bass, true- she's much more potent than that. It's much more a Billie Holiday slow burn, but in Spanish, y el espanol es una idioma mas proximo al corazón que ingles.

El fuego va consumirle.

Sorry about that. Soy el asesino del espanol. But it is still one of el gitano's axioms that if he can break his excreble Spanish down on a lady, then the repartee is practically over. And Omara is one of his very most secret weapons. Loose her, and the party or date will- how to say this - improve. Coulé, coupé, touché.

It happens every time. This album comes with el gitano's seal of guarantee. Buy it, use it with judicious abandon, and enjoy..

4.0 étoiles sur 5 worthwhile for the collector of Cuban music 13 juin 2000

For those who are expecting dance music, this is definitely not your CD. The Billie Holiday comparision is apt in some ways: this is melancholy music, not your high charged son montuno or salsa. If you are looking for that type of music, go for some of the other BVSC discs. Some of these tracks are incredible -- and you don't have to listen to Ry Cooder's grating slide on every track. My personal favorite is "no me llores mas." This disc brougth back memories of one of my favorite singers of this type of mellow-er music: Esther Borja. Her CD's are out of print (many of them), but Portuondo sings many of the same songs that Borja sang, but with a much huskier voice. If you enjoy the more ballad-like side of Cuban music, you will not be able to get enough of this CD.

..and Omara Portuondo, although not in the prime of her singing career, shows that just for the memories and the love of music many beautiful songs can again be made almost new. This is a CD recorded and produced with great care so as to highlight Omara's voice. The most significant detail is that nowhere is Ry Coooder's guitar to be heard, and this in itself is a big plus. Ibrahim Ferrer's CD was overproduced and if "real Cuban music" lovers were bothered to hear that hawaiian guitar where it did not belong, don't be afraid, it is not here. Omora Portuondo's CD brings a collection of songs which we get to like and love more and more with every listening.

There are very few songs that can do what nearly every single song on this CD can do for me. You know how sometimes a song taps into some hidden or undeveloped part of who you are? Well, for me, with the exception of one or two songs here, this CD transports me to a different level. I really can't articulate it any better than that. After I listen to it, I just sashay around the house (when I used to walk). I think I'm going to go and put on something slinky now!
