4.0 étoiles sur 5 Jimmy Buffett - The Hotel Is Open 27 avril 2010
Par Steven Sly - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD Achat vérifié
Now well into his 6th decade on the planet Jimmy Buffett can still fill football stadiums with his laid back blend of rock, folk, country and Caribbean soul. Buffett's previous album to this one was chock full of covers with only four original songs on the disc. On "Hotel" Buffett wrote or co-wrote all but a few tracks and has produced a really nice album that should please fans of his many musical incarnations over the years. Buffett's more recent efforts always have seemed to contain at least one or two total dud songs, but there are not really any complete throwaways on this one. There are some missteps here and there, like Jimmy trying to rap on "Turn Up The Heat And Pass The Rosé" and the rather deliberately concert friendly songs like "Big Top" and "Summerzcool", but these are all still decent tunes. The last 3rd of the album is where things really take off. The surf rock tune "Surfing In A Hurricane" is probably a lot of fun live. The title track is a long one and one of the album's highlights. It could have fit right in on the "Far Side Of The World" album, and lends a satisfying left turn here. The album closer "A Lot To Drink About" is classic Buffett humor and really should be a hit record. It is fun, but at the same time topical and is a great example of what Buffett has always done best. Overall "Buffett Hotel" is a very nice album and should be pleasing to parrotheads. Jimmy still has it after all these years and remains a more than capable songwriter who continues to put out quality music.

I've been a fan of Jimmy's for decades. I've seen him in concert, own two of his books, and five or six of his albums. I've listened to it all the way through twice and tried a third time before I deleted it from the playlist on my iPod. I had my brother listen to it, and he didn't even get through the whole thing before he told me it 'stunk'. I'll always and forever be a Parrot Head, but this album was disappointing.

Overall a great new CD from Jimmy. Having heard some of these songs in concert in November I was looking forward to receiving this release. I was not disappointed. A lot of different sounds making a great mix of new songs. The ONLY one that I was moderately dissapointed with was the version of "A Lot To Drink About" - I think the version recorded in Key West earlier this year has more life to it and I like it better, but that is just a matter of taste as it is a great song, that only Jimmy could pull of with such aplomb. Thus far my personal favorite is "Surfing In A Hurricane" which was played in concert to a video on the Jumbotron - cool.

Overall I am very happy to add this CD to my extensive collection and will enjoy it often!

As an aside - I was fortunate enough to be able to walk right up to the stage at Madison Square Garden after the last concert of the tour on 11/24/09 and watch Jimmy play "Defying Gravity" to a very small group assembled there. Short of sitting and talking to him personally I was in Parrothead heaven!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Buffett Buffet Delivers 12 décembre 2009

I'm a long-time Parrothead, so there's no hesitation or decision making to purchase when Buffett serves up another studio album. I just had my first run-through of the album, and I must agree with the other reviews. It's got a great mix of lyrics and sounds. I immediately enjoyed 'Nobody From Nowhere', 'Rhumba Man' and 'Summerzcool'.

I really dig the overall sounds of each track. This is certainly a continued break from the 'beach/flip-flop/boat drink' feel, but, like 'Take the Weather With You' it still feels like Buffett. I'm looking forward to digesting each track. Unless you have not liked what he's done is the past few years, Buffett fans should find plenty to enjoy.

Over the past 35 or so years Jimmy Buffett has changed from beach bum to world traveler to author to mogul. Buffett Hotel is his best album in years and deserves a serious listen. Buffett Hotel is like a parrothead philosophy lesson.

While not perfect in its song selection the album does have some great moments as it moves from catchy pop songs to surf guitar riffs to ballads. Buffett is strongest on the ballads on this one. Memorable cuts include Beautiful Swimmers, We Learned to Be Cool From You, A Lot to Drink About, and Turn Up the Heat and Chill The Rose.

Do yourself a favor turn up the music, turn up the heat, pour yourself a glass of rose, and watch the beautiful swimmers.
